Failure to Launch

"Well, Absol are here somewhere, Tropius are usually on the other side of Fortree though. But the weather on Route 119 is really unruly, so when it’s raining over there they migrate for a little while," she explained methodically, rubbing her chin like an esteemed professor. The Weather Institute had books filled with little bits of trivia just like that one, and contained a whole tome on lore surrounding poor Absol. It was a scientific redundancy to assume a mere Pokémon could actually cause disasters.

Beautifly drifted a little lazily between May and Altaria; the trainer sensed the Butterfly Pokémon was tired after following Altaria. Layla was not a Pokémon built for speed, so with a smile May drew out her Pokéball and the Pokémon disappeared in a beam of crimson light. She did the same for Aria, but not before stroking her long, slender neck in thanks for the transport. “I think it rained here yesterday, and it’s moving West, so we might be in luck with Tropius!”

Serena eyes were shining as she listen to May describe everything in detail. May was knowledgable bout everything that Serena knew she was in good hands. “Oh, I hope we see one soon!” she said looking around the surrounding forest.

Many other creatures were around, Surskit and Marill were swimming in the pond off to the left, and Linoone and Poochyena scrambled through the grass and shrubs. No sign of either a Tropius or Absol though. Serena knew it would take longer to find them, but she was so ready to encounter one, she was basically bouncing with excitement.

May was no soft cookie, but she was no genius either. She knew what she knew in exquisite detail, but the world held a lot more for her to learn. Maybe living around Professor Birch back in Littleroot had affected her a little more than she'd realised! The local Pokémon scrambled around and played, very few taking much notice of the two humans and their Kalos-born Pokémon companion. Strange humans and powerful Pokémon passed through all the time. Even the young wild Pokémon got bored of them eventually.

"Hey Serena, do you hear that?" May asked suddenly, a deep rumbling coming from all around - the bridge itself seemed to vibrate a little, not tossing or swaying, just buzzing with the rest of the world. It wasn't a consistent buzz. It had a rhythm, sort of like gigantic footsteps. The weather was still perfectly clear, so it wasn't thunder. She glanced over the bridge end and noticed a few of the local Marill diving under water, suddenly in a rush. The Surskit were nowhere to be seen. The Mightyena and their packs disappeared into the hedgerows with the Linoone. Something was coming that the local Pokémon didn't want to be around. "I bet it's the Tropius! But ... huh, is this their watering hole?" she asked herself, though loud enough that her friend could hear. "Are we in the way?"

"Well, we'll have to do it again! But with a view like this I can't imagine ever getting off," she answered, her expression soft. Her worries had melted away. It was getting close to the end of their rotation, and she wondered what they could possibly do next. "Uh, since I'm new to the area, do you have any idea what we could do next?" she asked sincerely, scratching the back of her head in embarrassment. She felt like such a burden. But she was excited for adventure!

"Oh, duh! Of course he’s fast!" she groaned, slumping her shoulders. Her fastest Pokémon was the first she’d seen from Serena’s group, it seemed so obvious it’d be built for speed! Amateur mistake. Maybe May was just a little bit rusty? "We’ll keep low, but the terrain gets rocky ahead so grip Pride tight, I’m sure he won’t let you down!" she instructed, even casting the Fire-type a cheeky wink.

May hopped onto her Dragon’s back, nestling between the huge cotton-soft wings, along the smooth azure spine that divided the clouds. Beautifly, rather than hitching a ride on May’s head, fluttered around the pair as they took off, following the great beast into the skies. They only flew about twenty ft into the air, keeping fully within Serena’s eyesight, before they took off to the left. The Route would take them left for half a mile, then anybody on the ground would face an uphill battle along a long incline leading to Fortree. It was among the most breath taking landscapes Hoenn had to offer, and from May’s vantage point it was all the more impressive. Even Aria and Layla could appreciate the wide forests, the nearby misty mountains, the village hidden in the trees.

"Well Pride," Serena said as May flashed him a wink, "I think this the first time in a while you’ve gotten a real work out. Think you can still got it?" Pride gave a roar, but he knew that his trainer was only teasing him. They watched as Aria rose from the ground, cloud-like wings flapping. They didn’t rise too far in the air, allowing Serena to be able to follow them with ease.

May took off at slow pace to the left, and Pride followed suit. Once May realized we were following, so began to fly faster. Of course, Pride had a little trouble at first because it had been so long since they had done anything like this. Slacking off for a couple of months probably wasn’t the best option. Knowing that Pride could handle the run without her guidance, Serena decided to look at the scenery as they flew past. The Hoenn Region was one of the most breathtaking regions she had visited, and the Pokemon were some of her favorites.

The journey didn't take terribly long, though travelling rarely did when a Dragon was involved. Altaria were not renowned for their speed, but any Pokémon capable of flight had a huge advantage against their Earth-bound counterparts. That said, that Pyroar certainly kept up to speed. May kept glancing back, ensuring that Serena and her Pokémon were within a safe distance, but she quickly realised that little would stand in the lion's way and live to tell the tale.

They soon escaped Route 121 and entered 120, which by all accounts was exceedingly less humanised - the grass stalks grew incredibly tall, and the wild Pokémon of the Route were exceedingly powerful compared to many other areas. There were patches of tricky marsh land, many high ledges, and several ruins of legend were scattered within the area. May patted Aria's neck and the albatross began to drift low, come to land on an old wooden bridge - old, yes, but far from flimsy. Serena was surely nearby. May would put money on a Tropius being close, too.

"Hmm, close enough. But I have an idea," she answered, taking another Pokéball from her waist. In a flash of light a cotton-dragon burst from the small capsule in a flash of white light, landing on the ground just by May’s side. Beautifly preened happily, knowing exactly what was to come. Altaria sang, pleased to be of service, and positively ecstatic to spread her nimbus-feathered wings.

"Do you have a flying Pokémon with you, something you can follow me on? Or something fast you can ride on?" May asked, devilish mischief lighting her eyes. This was a call for action, adventure! "If not we can both ride my Altaria, Aria Tanelle!"

Serena turned to her trusty Pride, stroking his mane. “I don’t have any flying types, but Pyroar’s the faster one of my team.” she said with a sense of pride. Pride crouched low to the ground so Serena could climb on his back, lightly gripping his majestic mane.

"I’m sure we’ll have no problem keeping up with you," she said as May climbed on the cloud Pokemon. Serena knew the Dragon type would be fast, but hey, the call of adventure waits for no one!

he smiled as he went into the cart, sitting down he felt like he should live here from all the times he rode it. “a Nimbasa native, why of course I’m not. I travel a lot” he waited for the ferriswheel to start moving he wondered what she would think of this ride

"Yeah, I guess I travel a lot, too," she replied, suddenly thinking of her adventures. She’d mastered Hoenn and Hoenn alone, but had visited Kanto, Johto and now Unova. She wondered where she’d go next.

The Ferris Wheel rattled into life, but apart from the first jolt as it shuddered into motion, the ride was actually quite smooth. May watched out the window with absolute wonder, utterly content because the higher they rose, the more beautiful the sights became. It was a wondrous thing. To her right was Nimbasa and its shining golden lights, to the left the lights of the Gym and Roller Coaster Complex were dimmer, but three times as colourful. But it was dead ahead, out and onto the ocean, that the light was the most beautiful - it was all ivory and blue, the sea calm, the moon huge, unrivalled, and full.

N looked out remembering why he always love this ferriswheel, he coudn’t imaginenany other place that was such beautiful. He looked towarda May seeing that she seem to like the ride, “so, May how are you enjoying this ride? It’s quite beautiful isn’t it?” He asked her wondering what she was going to say

"Very much so," she whispered, glancing to her comrade with a smile. Any anger she'd had disappeared into the brilliance of the view. She felt herself become completely peaceful, completely content with where she was. "I can see why you ride this thing so often. Do you do it alone or ... ?" Well, of course he'd probably have a hundred friends, N seemed like a cool guy! Being in such a small space with a stranger was a little intense, but she felt quite comfortable with him. She knew, somehow she just innately knew, that he was a good person.

“Oh, both are quite incredible!” she replied happily, knowing that both breeds were available for capture just a mile or so away, a little closer to Fortree City. Why Serena’s face fell so quickly, May couldn’t really tell. She guessed that Serena was a little insecure, perhaps not a trainer cut out for Pokémon battles. She hoped it wasn’t something much worse.

“My friend from home, he’s called Brendan, he has a Tropius! It gave us some trouble too, they’re just so big.” Her memory was a little patchy since her last battle with Brendan was years ago, but if memory served, Tropius was a bulky but friendly species, known especially for being gentle with humans who accidentally crossed into their nests. Absol was another story all together, and was dubbed the Disaster Pokémon. May had only fought an Absol once, and it was a beast of intangible strength. Of course, when raised by a member of the Elite Four, you couldn’t expect anything less!

"Are they close by?" Serena asked, imagining seeing both of them in real life. She couldn’t wait to see them. She had done some research, knowing that while Tropius was suppose to be a gentle creature, Absol was considered the Disaster Pokemon, and was somewhat illusive. Whether this was a folklore of its breed, she did not know. But the whole thing excited her to no end.

"I would love for you to lead the way May!" she exclaimed, the prospect of new adventures energizing Serena. Maybe this is what her mother talked about. Maybe journey was going to help Serena.

N chuckled a little bit, "well I guess it is a weird name for me, but atleast May is the name of a beautiful moth, right" he stated, looking around he hoped that nothing would make this night go bad. "Ferriswheels are really fun and all, but the best part is getting to the top. It's such a beautiful scenery seeing alk the lights and suroindings of Nimbasa." Smiling he walked towards the ferriswheel, once there he gestured for her to get in, after all he was trying to be a gentleman, "I'm sure you'll enjoy this ride" he said with a smile

"Thanks!" She climbed into the carriage a little cautiously, never having ridden a Ferris Wheel before. She felt a little nervous - gosh, it was a tall amusement ride! How secure were the deadbolts holding their container aloft? It shook a little as she took a seat, her body weight already affecting the delicate balance. Oh, my. The sights better be worth it! She looked to N expectedly, giving him a happy smile. She was a little scared, yeah, but he'd been on it a hundred times, it was surely a safe experience! They had a minute before the Wheel would turn again, so she waited for N to climb in, resting her hands on her lap. "So, umm, are you local to Nimbasa? This is my first time in Unova," she admitted a little shyly, lost for small-talk.

he thought for a moment, Hoenn he had heard that somewhere, he couldn't remember where it was at though. "Hoenn, oh what an exotic place to live" he had never seen hoenn so he assumed it was exotic or fancy. He walked towards the ferris wheel, "My name is N, a pleasure to meet you" he added, seeing that she indeed was a traveler"the ferris wheel here is very ncredinle, the view from the top is phenomenal.

“I’ve never actually been on one before,” she realised in surprise, her mood quickly rising. The distraction was already helping. They walked side by side, and luckily it wasn’t too crowded. Nimbasa’s night life was really focused around the city centre, things like the Underground, or the Musical. May wasn’t really one for clubbing or the like, she preferred earthy pleasures. Things like the beach, the night sky, or a good Pokémon Contest. “N is an unusual name. Short for something? I guess May is a kinda weird name too, I mean, it’s the same name as a month so …” she trailed off, hoping to Arceus that she hadn’t suddenly offended her new friend. That was the last thing she wanted!

The region had made a thoroughly terrible first impression. But then something cut into her attention, a voice, a little smoother than most. She jumped a little in astonishment, looking up at the surprisingly tall stranger.

“Oh, sorry, you just surprised me,” she explained, suddenly blushing from embarrassment. As angry as she was, she couldn’t vent on a completely innocent stranger. Wait, what did he say? “Oh, the Ferris Wheel? I hear if you go on it you have to battle somebody,” May replied, confused. She wondered if the stranger was a trainer. She wondered if he was any good.

He looked at her confused, “A battle?” he thought, for a moment it was all silent. He then turned back to her “Why would someone have to battle just to get on a Ferris wheel? It doesn’t seem right” He mentioned, he had never needed to battle just to ride the Ferris wheel. “I always ride it, I never need to battle someone.” He then realized she must be a trainer, that’s when he thought he figured it all out. “So, you must be a trainer. Battles always in your mind huh?”

“Oh, uh, sorry,” she replied, a little ‘off her game’. May was, of course, an excellent trainer, and an excellent Coordinator to boot. She hadn’t researched Unova particularly well, but anytime she’d passed the Ferris Wheel earlier in the day she’d noticed battling trainers. She remembered something her mother told her, an old shred of advice – ‘Never assume. Assumptions lead to mistakes’. Maybe it was time to actually pay attention to the old bat.

“Yeah, I’ll go on the Ferris Wheel with you, it’ll clear my head!” May said with a little more cheer, but the undertone of her darkened mood was still present. It was in how she held herself, her arms folded and huddled around herself, as if she were cold (but she was far from cold). “I’m May, by the way. Uh, from Hoenn,” she added as an afterthought, cringing internally. God, introductions were never straight forward.

“You’re probably a strong trainer if you can just visit other regions so easily,” May replied in wonder, gauging her new found friend. May was not a battler at heart, but a gentle flower. Of course, capable of leveraging peace between two gargantuan legend-class Pokémon, she was also not a girl to underestimate. She wondered how deep Serena’s story ran, if she were a simple trainer like so many, or if she were ‘great’.

“So are you just exploring this route, or are you searching for a certain Pokémon?” she asked, in the back of her mind hoping Serena wouldn’t find her too nosy. May’s eyes drifted to the river, drawn to how it continued to trickle and glisten undisturbed by the two girls’ revelations. May knew Hoenn like the back of her hand, of course. If her friend needed a guide, there was none better than May!

Serena’s face turned into a stoic mask. Of course, she couldn’t blame May, for they had just met; she wouldn’t know about Olympia. But it seemed unfair to lie to her and tell her that she was a strong trainer, when that just wasn’t the case at all. “Well, I’m not actually a very strong trainer,” Serena told her friend. “Something happened back home, so my mom figured it would be a good chance for me to see the world, to get my mind off of things.”

"Though, I did come here in hopes of finding either an Absol, or a Tropius!’ she said, a smile returning to her face. She had decided to see if there was some Pokemon to add to her company, and those two seemed like the perfect choice. "They seem like amazing Pokemon, and I would enjoy to have them for traveling companions!"
