Semester #1: Making a Tiger mum
WELL FIRST OF ALL. it has been a while since I posted anything (the funnies, I mean), and I'll excuse myself on the basis of uni work, because saying "apathetic" just sounds plain LAZY.
"Outrageous" you say? Well I'm happy you can agree faithful follower. Too often OTHER posters would leave their metaphorical children in the dark, to fend for themselves with cheap memes and poorly made vector comics. Now you only have to endure HALF OF THAT whilst I make my return. (temporarily) I'll be stuffing my blog full of funny tid bits faster than a fish can drown in water! now if that doesn't entice you I don't know what will.
The BEST part of this semester was character design! We had an exercise to take a picture of someone in costume in our class and create a character from what they were dressed as. I started with a pregnant Korean girl who was playing a pregnant trophy Chinese wife, because who doesn't love a mail order bride?
I took that, was brainstorming, then had a buddy laugh about what if she was literally a Chinese tiger mum. AT THAT MOMENT, CREATIVITY STRUCK.
In that instance I realised something. To create A GREAT CHARACTER. one must set out to understand that character. And to physically create the Fearsome "Tiger mum" that was already growing in my cerebral cortex, I must become the mum.
And so my adventure began featuring the one man fellowship of yours truly. But against all odds, or atleast most of the odds, I waded through and found only the highest of quality references. especially some KUH-RAZY looking korean tigers. I'm legit, google that shiz.
After making and baking the idea some more, Cari came into her own. and eventually popped out as this.
But after a fierce battle with a printer and a quickly approaching deadline, we had our next assingment.
to make our toons walk. Now this ain't so bad surely, for some people. Now before you go on saying "what do you mean, SOME PEOPLE?"
lemme elaborate a little. If you know anything about animation, you know that you gotta draw pictures about 1000 times, looking exactly the same but also a little different, so they move. Some others had simple shapes to work with, and others had more solid characters. I ended up with a striped, super jiggly, super detailed mega cat.
Rookie error, I know. But rather than think logically, my ambition and optimism took control forcefully.
But luckily it ended up more in the ball park of the Denzel Washington "flight" kind of movie, then the "black hawk down" one. Not that I was on cocaine and felt like I had landed a plane upside down, but art college really does come close.
I worked painstaking hours trying to make sure as a character moved into a "3D" shot that they'd still look the same.harder said than done when it's a 2D drawing lemme tell ya what, son. I had to study how pregnant women walk for days, and then have people shove a volleyball up their shirt and pick up a toy to get reference.
They should just rename Animation at UTS to "drawing butts for 3 hours" as I had to make sure her hips were swaying with JUST ENOUGH SASS to be a pregnant mum BUT NOT TOO MUCH SASS, because she still needs to seem like she's carrying a small sack of potatoes under her shirt. And then there are the arcs. Fun fact, animation never moves in a straight line, as it looks yuck, you gotta make everything natural move in arcs. So a lot of the time spent was drawing circles her booty and making sure it doesn't look like a robot.
I've seen so much booty that I may well graduate as a pirate.
