Sonic VS Zavok: A Sonic Forces scene re-write

I generally enjoy Sonic Forces’ story more than most of the fanbase does, but this particular scene of Sonic being freed and facing Fake!Zavok in the Death Egg has always sorta bothered me. 

And since I believe complaining is pointless if you’re not gonna offer a solution, I thought of my own version. Under the cut in case you don’t wanna read it.

This is a decent rewrite, although I disagree with Zăvok not speaking. Personally I felt the copies having a personality is an interesting trait, that like a lot of things could have been explored better. With time, I interpret the “lacking a soul” Shadow uttered as the replicas having no free will, being slaves to the master of the gemstone.

It would be ironic for Zavok to once again be a slave of Eggman and have no free will to fight back unlike last time. This already is implied with Shadow, who has no personality to speak - and that’s because the real Shadow wouldn’t be such a cold-hearted villain.

If I were to rewrite, I would have included the other Deadly Six on the background at least, joining the final battle.

Cruella: We Live In A Society, Darling - Quill’s Scribbles

So I decided I was going to post new Scribbles and reviews every Sunday, get back into a routine, but the trailer for Disney’s Cruella de Vil movie was released today and it’s so hilariously bad, I simply had to talk about it now.

Now I’m sure the vast majority of you reacted in a similar way when the trailer came out; “Wait, there’s a Cruella de Vil movie?” Yes. Yes there is. I found this out last year because parts of my university campus at Greenwich were shut down for filming. In fact this Cruella de Vil movie has been in development since 2011 as part of Disney’s now forgotten plan of remaking Disney classics from the perspective of the villains, starting with Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie. Of course this was swiftly abandoned when Disney realised they could just straight up remake the classics without putting any thought, effort, or creativity into it.

Then Joker happened. Then it received Oscar buzz. Then it made over a billion dollars at the box office. Then suddenly Cruella was rushed into production.

The Cruella trailer’s naked attempts to imitate Joker on every level, from the cinematography to the pretentious musings of the titular character justifying their immoral actions, is really quite astounding. I knew Disney have been creatively bankrupt for a while now, but this is on a whole other level. Not a single original thought or idea, presented utterly shamelessly. Now some may well accuse Joker of the same thing, citing how director Todd Phillips took influence from Martin Scorsese films like Taxi Driver and The King Of Comedy, but there’s a world of difference between paying homage to something and just straight up copying. Also I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that Joker is influenced by a film that’s over thirty years old whereas Cruella is ripping off a film that practically came out yesterday.

But it’s not just the fact that the film looks visually similar to Joker. It also possesses the same delusion of grandeur and self importance that Joker had as well. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed Joker, but it did have a tendency to take itself way too seriously, and Cruella seems to be attempting to match that as well, turning her into this ultimate girlboss wanting to make a statement about women in fashion. Like… it’s not that deep, guys. They even try to give the character some undeserved legitimacy by changing her name from Cruella to Estella because apparently Cruella isn’t a very realistic name. You know? Whereas a surname like de Vil or a mansion named Hell Hall is perfectly believable, am I right?

Now before I go on, I just want to preempt the potential pseudo-feminist defences this film is going to get. ‘Oh so it’s okay for a male character like the Joker to have a film like this, but a woman like Cruella can’t.’ No. You can shut that shit down right away. The issue isn’t that the Joker is a man and Cruella is a woman. The issue is that the Joker is an enigmatic character with an interesting philosophy worth exploring, whereas Cruella isn’t and doesn’t. The Joker wants to create anarchy and chaos to prove to Batman and Gotham that the rules of society are a sham. Cruella wants to kill puppies in order to make a fur coat. Do you see how the two don’t compare? She’s not some devious mastermind with a grand plan. She’s just a vain, selfish old woman with a fur fetish.

And please don’t think I’m diminishing Cruella de Vil in any way. I love Cruella de Vil. She’s one of my all time favourite Disney villains, but a big part of her appeal is her simplicity. There’s no nuance to her. No depth. She’s a deliberately shallow person who cares only for her status and appearance. You’re not going to make her more interesting by giving her some tragic backstory because literally no one gives a shit. Once again, like with many of Disney’s movies and TV shows that have been announced recently, I have to ask the question; ‘Who asked for this?’ Is there really any demand to find out the exact circumstances behind why she would want to murder Dalmations? Does anybody care? I may not like Maleficent very much, but credit where it’s due, at least they tried to create something original with that film. With Cruella it looks like they’re copying what worked with Joker without recognising that that film’s style of story and characterisation simply doesn’t fit with Cruella’s. It would be like doing a Dick Dastardly and Muttley movie in the style of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. It just wouldn’t work.

I’ve also heard concerns from people that think Cruella is going to make the character a sympathetic anti-hero, which… no, I think it’s pretty clear from the trailer that Cruella is a villain protagonist. I don’t necessarily think it’s immoral to do a film about Cruella de Vil. What it is is piss your pants funny because Cruella is an over the top, larger than life villain with a simple motivation that doesn’t suit the kind of po-faced, super serious character study that Disney are clearly going for. I don’t think there’s any risk of children wanting to kill puppies after watching the film, just as there was no risk of people wanting to bring down society after watching Joker.

Anyway I can’t wait for the other inevitable villain prequel films Disney have planned. Maybe a film about Ursula as a struggling single mum trying to support her children. Or a film about the whale from Pinocchio who gets picked on by all the other whales because of his gluten deficiency.  And of course the tragic tale of Gaston, who suffers from severe PTSD after the war and just wants to settle down with a good, subservient woman for the rest of his… 

Oh shit, Disney already did that, didn’t they?

You know I’ve been thinking about what you said about Silver being just as forced as Zavok in games and honestly you’re right. Both usually get put into stories and don’t get to do too much. This is especially true when you remember back during 06 Silver wasn’t as beloved as he is now. Heck in some circles he’s still isn’t.

Exactly. Silver might have more fans now, but back during Rivals, Rivals 2, etc, he was arguably as derided as the likes of Chris. And of course, to this day, when certain people complain about Sonic’s alleged shitty friends, he’s usually one of the first to get mentioned.

If these people happen to like Silver, but don’t like Zavok, then that’s fine. We all have our favourites, and that makes even the most reasonable of us a little biased now and then. But they should just be honest about that, rather than make up a bunch of reasons why the guy who time travels just to make appearances “makes more narrative sense” that fall apart the moment you actually think about them.

Do you ever fear becoming Irrelevant and Forgotten as a Writer?

Not even a little. Most of my favourite writers are now forgotten. A couple of them I've helped to be remembered once again. But they are loved by people who ran across them in old bookshops or on dusty shelves. 

I figure I'll probably be forgotten too, and hope that every now and again someone would find something I made and like it. I've never yet worried about being relevant -- if I did I'd not know what to write. I'd rather write about what I care about, and let other people decide how relevant to their lives it is.

Greetings! I have a question regarding to licenced material. Specifically, I was wondering why licenced creators create new characters for the licenced material (say, Batman TAS created Harley Quinn, Superman TAS created Limewire, Sonic SatAM created Sally and many characters). I think is a question that I don't see many creators speak about. For example, why the IDW staff created Tangle and Whisper (congratulations on them getting a videogame appearance!), so to speak? Sorry if question is dumb

Nah that’s a pretty cool question, let’s see what I can do about answering it...!

First of all, I can only speak for myself and my experience writing and drawing for Sonic as a freelancer and as a fan. I’m sure every writer/artist has their own reasons for creating characters... more after the break!

One of the main reasons for creating new characters in Sonic’s world is to aid in adaptation to a different storytelling medium. Nearly all of the lore we draw from for IDW Sonic is based on the games, specifically the “Modern Sonic” games set in Sonic’s World. The game’s cast is geared towards being engaging characters to play as or play against. Nearly all of them are young teens, and close friends of Sonic himself, with an interest in heroic adventuring. This absolutely makes sense in the context of the games, where storylines are primarily focused on running and jumping and falling off things. It’s exciting and fun because as the player of the video game, you get to actively do those things yourself; you create the tension and emotional connection yourself. But if I wrote a comic storyline that was a straight beat-for-beat recreation of an action stage from one of the games, it would probably get boring and repetitive very fast. A plot that is fun to passively read in a comic requires more threads, challenges, and twists to maintain the reader’s interest (sidebar, that doesn’t make it better, just different. Novels vs. comics vs. movies have similar dynamics). 

So to add texture to the plot, characters with different interests and skill-sets are a very useful addition. A character like Whisper has a very different way of solving problems than any existing member of the cast, makes full use of Wisps as a part of the normal world, and has a subdued, personality that’s unusual. Tangle has played the “new guy” role, allowing her to work as a reader proxy to have the world explained to. Every new villain introduced has their own flavor of villainy and threat level that is different from Eggman, allowing for a plethora of new kinds of plots for Sonic and Co. to face. Also, each new character is an opportunity to add diversity to the cast: creating a richer mix of characters with different ages, builds, genders, sexes, races, etc. gives us more options to explore.

And finally, there’s the b-list and non-combat characters; the people who are hugely important in keeping the world working. They may be important to the heroes but aren’t equipped to go out smashing robots themselves: people like Jewel, Nite and Don, the Sonic Fan Club, etc. The make the world feel lived-in and participate in ways that don’t involve combat. This allows for more complex stories in a world that can comfortably operate at the slower pace called for in a written story.

All of that said, it’s still SUPER important to create characters that look and feel right for Sonic’s world. We work really hard to create characters that follow established design principles, and if they are that active “player character”-type, seem like they could work in the context of a game (and they did! Yay!).

If you ever do a Pokémon anime review again, could you lay off the "Ash is always 10" jokes? It gets grating hearing people joke about it like it's a failing of the show when 99% of all fictional character never age. It's not like age equals development (just look at Spider-Man and how HE's been reset various times); Ash has changed quite a bit since the nineties. I just don't see how making him age would improve the show any, versus giving him character development or making a new protagonist.

Because age DOES mean development. It means time has passed. It means they have learnt and grown. You seem to have ignored that I am often criticizing Spider-Man comics because they want to perpetually keep him in a nebulous early-20s when he’s clearly not - because they refuse to acknowledge the passage of time. Age slowly? Fine. I’m all for that. Keeping them at a certain age despite all evidence to the contrary suggests they do NOT want the character to change and grow - they do not want him to become a different person - they want to keep him in the same nebulous spot so they can have him learn the same lessons over and over and over and over and over ad infinitum. Development doesn’t even stop at aging. I’ve got family and friends much older than me who are STILL learning, still developing. We need to break away from the idea that aging = the end of the story. It’s just the next chapter.
