Hobbit Movie Update: I found them on UK Netflix (thank you VPNs), unfortunately they will be removed on August 30th (it’s the 14th as of posting this). Thankfully, despite being grounded, I have managed to watch the first two movie, and started Battle of the Five Armies. I will get through this movie in 16 days, even with a summer homework cram, and driver’s ed blocking my way. *Insert Undertale reference to determination here*. Anyway thought’s on Unexpected Journey: It was so good. The action, the meeting of Gandalf and Bilbo being near word-for-word from the book. The dwarves singing the songs. That one elf girl who’s like a queen or something? The one who keeps talking to Gandalf telepathically? No idea what her deal is, but she’s pretty. And the dress she was wearing? Stunning. Is the whole thing with Ragabond the Brown kind of pointless? Yes. Is it cool to see him on his sleigh pulled by rabbits? Also yes. The greater goblin? Flawless. The way he freaks out over the elven swords, the way his beard is like flesh, the dwarves + Gandalf fighting their way out of goblin caves was amazing. By far the greatest part of both movies so far? Gollum. The acting, the CGI, the voice, the gollum gollum cough, the movement? Beautifully executed. He was genuinely intimidating, while also being sympathetic enough to justify Bilbo’s decision not to kill him. The way he wails and cries when The Ring is gone, the way he shifts so smoothly between anger and curiosity. The way the better side of him is clearly at least a little bit afraid of his corrupted half? I fucking loved this scene. Also the last line of the movie is Bilbo saying “I think the worst is behind us.” I want to take that, and then hard cut to Smaug breathing fire on him. The Desolation of Smaug:
I made the mistake of eating when I knew the spider scene was coming up. Do not recommend, I had to take multiple breaks. Elves? Was so confused. I didn’t realize that was Legolas until they said his name later on. I’m confused on Tauriel name pronounciation because I’m a Toby Fox fan and I keep think of Toriel. Also only some of the Elvish is translated and it’s driving me crazy. Like, in the same scene the subtitles went from (shouts in Elvish) to (Close the gate!) both spoken by Legolas, both without cutting away from him. Could I tell that the first one was meant to be “sound the alarm”? Yes. Does that matter? No. Because it KEEPS doing it, and now it’s doing it with the Orcish and the Black Speech, and the Dwarvish. I’m losing my fucking mind over here! I am also confused because I thought that Legolas was a high elf, not a wood elf. Oh, and the Tauriel-Fili love story is boring as fuck. But she’s pretty….I love the braid in her hair. Also Legolas’s hair is SO white, like holy hell. Also very pretty. And they’re both fucking badass. Smaug is fantastically done. I remember him being a lot redder, also the scene where he destroys Laketown is in the third movie? I distinctly remember it being in the second one, during the Ed Sheeran song. But the song played during the credits. Like, that’s a scene that stuck with me nearly my entire life, how could I have misremembered it so much? I have started reading Fellowship, so there will be an update soon.
