His brain operates as a form of cosmic antenna; he can hear, smell, and taste everything on the planet. He is also telepathically empathetic; he can experience your suffering as if it's his own.
His early life was rather horrible... He had sensory overload psychosis and severe memory dysmorphia, meaning stray thoughts from dying strangers permanently lodged themselves into his mind.
Sentinel Zeta Prime weaponized him, forcing him onto the High Council to serve as a living lie detector against rival politicians.
He took a vow of silence because he considered the Council to be "all talk and no action," and he would let his actions speak louder than any words.
Meeting Megatron essentially gave him a psychic high because the gladiator’s hyper-focused mind provided an ideological clarity that acted as his only source of pure silence.
His loyalty to Megatron is actually a neurobiological addiction and co-regulation dependency.
Megatron has become a tyrant far worse than Sentinel ever was, yet Soundwave is a prisoner of his own anatomy and cannot leave without descending back into sensory overload psychosis, hyperacusis collapse, cognitive agnosia, and fragmented schizophrenia.
To survive the guilt of what he has become, he essentially committed psychological suicide. He relies on extreme cognitive dissonance and compartmentalization to retreat into a vacant, hollow state.
He is Megatron's ultimate enabler, a hollow bot operating on autopilot.
He possesses zero self-preservation left and suffers from passive suicidal ideation; when people try to kill him, he doesn't feel anger or even really care, because he knows that, really, it's deserved.
