I mentioned the fact that Xena is 30 years old this week, at the family dinner table. My mother responded that I was obsessed with the show, the way my autistic kid is obsessed with minecraft.

I mean, yeah, I loved it. I went to 2 Conventions (across the world, 15 hours flight away), bought the fan kits, bought all 6 seasons on VHS from the UK (also the other side of the world). I've been to locations in Auckland where the show was filmed. I've met a few of the cast, had a meal and met family of one, and have friends around the world who I met through this fandom. I was in forums and chat boards, I read so much fanfic.

So yeah, sure I was obsessed with it. But you know what, as a baby dyke in the late 90s, I didn't have anything else. I wasn't really welcome to be myself while living at home. I didn't know how to find the community other than online. So, it was more than just a show I enjoyed, it was a support network. It was meeting other (and older) lesbians to share stories with and find hope for the future.

Don't know if my mum will ever truly understand that, nor do I care to dredge all that back up again. That was a shit time in our relationship and we've come so far we don't need to go back there.

Thank you Xena, for giving me all of that.

Everytime I see something gay in a tv show and I say to myself ‘wow that might be the gayest thing thats ever happened on tv!’ I have to remind myself that the actual gayest thing that has ever happened on television was the time on Xena Warrior Princess that Xena got Sappho to write Gabrielle a poem for her birthday and they used Sappho’s actual poem.

Which means that in the Xena universe, one of Sappho’s most famous remaining poems was one dedicated to Gabrielle from Xena.

And that’s pretty fucking gay.
