The Empress and her loyal Guard.

Remember the UTY/UT cast Swap AU I briefly talked about a while ago? I finally finished my half of the designs, so @gaymeatcore and I can finally share our work LOL. They designed and drew Ceroba, and I designed and drew Starlo!

Ceroba swaps with Asgore, and is the ruling Empress of the Underground. Suffering from the loss of her daughter as well as her now ex-husband Chujin stepping down from his throne in order to focus on his scientific pursuits, she is consumed by grief and is desperate to obtain the needed human SOULs in order to break the barrier. She often isolates in her palace, not wanting her subjects to see how close to a break down their rule is.

Starlo swaps with Undyne, and is a humble-farmer-turned-Royal Guard. He took up the position solely to offer Ceroba some comfort and familiarity as her life turned to turmoil. Though he's miserable with the strict rules and protocol of Royal Guard, he maintains his post solely for Ceroba's sake, even if he knows deep down he can't kill any humans that may wander into the Underground.

a big part of the symmetry of the staroba dynamic is that Ceroba is as a matter of fact a massive hypocrite and that the relationship that develops between them is contingent on both of them being capable of shedding the personas they use to avoid the root of their problems

Starlo is a lot more overt about the persona he puts on in the form of North Star.

But I think it's important to consider that Ceroba as a mother is most acknowledged after she puts Kanako’s mask on.

I maintain a lot that Ceroba's dedication to legacy is part of the persona she maintains as the ideal woman. Which is not to say that those feelings are a lie, but to say that Ceroba faces conflict between her feelings and the wife persona, and when she puts the mask on she fully embraces the wife persona.

And I use "wife" over "mother" purposefully because Ceroba’s connection to motherhood is an extension of the role she plays as a wife. The role of a wife is to bear children for her husband, and other such beliefs.

The main difference is that Ceroba doesn't see performing the role of a wife to be the same as Starlo's sheriff/cowboy play-acting. She sees her own performance as a duty. As what she must do to be an adult woman. It comes back around again: the idea that adulthood means no longer being an individual.

Both of them, because they were childhood friends, are capable of seeing through the facade being performed. Starlo knows Ceroba is repressing herself and gets into silly shenanigans to make her open up. Ceroba knows Starlo is putting on a false bluster to mask his insecurities about his childhood, and only just barely plays along in the hope that he'll acknowledge reality.

And in post-canon there's space to play around with both of them embracing more of their true selves and desires as well as the process of getting to know each other again.
