We have lift off! Tori is finally in the air!

The Finishing Touches :)
*Deep breath*
We release Tori in 2 Days! That’s right, Tori, you’ll no longer be a caged bird. You’ll get to play with people from all over the world!
Speaking of playing around the world, have I mentioned that we’ve integrated 4 languages into the game? You can play in English, French, Spanish, or Japanese! :D
We’ve also had time to add some Easter-eggs into the game ;P Maybe you’ll spot some of them, but don’t tell! *sssshhhh
But now what?
Mostly polish and bug fixing. No big deal. We’re definitely going to have all these bugs fixed in two days. *Tries to hide panic.* :)
8 Days Left!
Tori officially releases on Steam and Itch.io in just 8 days! And we’ve been busier than ever trying to get the game polished and squeaky clean. Here’s a few of the things we’ve done in the past week.
The Poems:
We’ve given our poem UI an upgrade. Each new poem line now fully animates before resting in the corner of the screen, for players to read at their own pace :)
The Castle Island:
The bears are back! And this time with a vengeance... *gasp*
The Press:
We’ve sent out Steam keys to a bunch of awesome press! Hopefully a few of them take interest on our little bird game. Don’t be nervous, Tori, you got this! :D

Free-Look Camera & Cinematic Moments
With the release fast approaching, we’re trying to put the finishing touches on the experience of Tori. By adding a free-look camera, we hope to give players more control over what they see! “I spy something... RED!” :D
We’re also adding cinematic moments at key points in the narrative, to try and guide players as they fly around this big and sometimes overwhelming landscape. (Or should I say “Skyscape”) :P
GDC was Awesome!
Hi Everyone! Team Tori is back home from GDC, and now that we’re back to our normal sleep schedules, let’s talk about what we did :D
We were lucky enough to get a booth at Intel’s Student Games Showcase on Thursday. We got to show Tori to a bunch of people there, but more importantly, we got to meet fellow developers and see what awesome games other students were making. There’s some really great stuff being developed from all across the country!

Okay, that was all fun and stuff, but it’s time for us to get back in the action. We’ve got a LOT of work to do before our Steam release date of April 19, including adding just one more island to the game: The Castle! We don’t have a whole lot to show of it yet, but stick around to see how progress goes. Here are the first building blocks.
We have a just a few weeks left! I’m sure we’ll be fine :P
Tori (Beta) is Live on Itch! + Final Release Date for Steam
Big news today everyone, Tori is getting an update! Along with the Beta version comes bug fixes, new features and a brand new island to boot. Oh, and we almost forgot to mention our new trailer :P
Whew, we have a new-found appreciation for video game trailers after making one ourselves.

Although you can’t download it on Steam yet, we will be releasing the FULL version of Tori on April 19th! Aren’t deadlines exciting?! :D
Our new Steam page will be up and running in just a few days, so keep an eye out! We’ll post the link when it’s up.

GDC Prep + Making a Trailer
Hello there once again, fellow birds! GDC is coming up quick and we’re working like mad to prepare for our Beta Update! In preparation for GDC, we plan to release a new update to Tori around this time next week. We also have been preparing a new an improved trailer. (Our current trailer is so outdated, it’s practically false advertisement... Sssshhh) :P
Here’s a sneak peak at the new one:
To make the trailer, we’ve been utilizing Cinemachine, a cool plugin in Unity that allows you to make cinematic shots and cut-scenes relatively quickly and easily.
We’re very excited to have the opportunity to show Tori to fellow developers at GDC and we hope to see some of you there! If you would like to meet us there, please feel free to reach out to us right here on Tumblr or at our email:

Release Updates + Flappy Tori
First of all, thanks to everyone who checked out Tori on Itch.io :) In the last week, Tori (Alpha) has accumulated a whopping 384 downloads and counting! We’re extremely happy with the turnout and we really appreciate every last one of you, whether you download or not.
We’ve even gotten some good feedback from a few of you and it has given us some good insight on how to move forward with future releases, which brings us to our next point: improved flapping!
In the alpha version of Tori, flapping was done by holding down the left-mouse button, which wasn’t super clear and also didn’t make a huge amount of sense to most people. This is why why we opted to change it to a one-click = one-flap system! (kinda like Flappy Bird, but not really)
In addition, we’ve tweaked some values to allow players to fly much faster than before. So far, we think this was the right move (nyyyyoooom) :P
A YouTuber Played Tori!
Cryptic Hybrid, someone who plays lots of demos and alphas of new games, played Tori! This is super exciting for us and we would love to share with you all. If you want an in-depth look at Tori, but you aren’t sure if you want to download it, check out his video:

New Flight and 3 Rivers
As you can see in the gif above, Tori can now zoom trough the sky like a true avian explorer! Tori’s current flight angle changes their speed: Flying down makes Tori speed up, while flying up makes Tori fly much slower. We even have a really cool slipstream effect too, created with Unity Shuriken Particle System! :D
We’ve also edited the waterfall island to give it three separate river channels. This will be crucial in the progression of the island, as the player clears multiple blockages to allow the river to flow. One of these channels even goes through a hill!
We’ve been experimenting with colors in the game, and we came across a shader that creates an awesome gradient between colors based on height in the world. Here’s the result! ^^ It may change a bit by the time we put it in the game for real, but this is the direction we’re going in.
Waterfall Island’s First Pass
We got a new island coming at you! It features rice fields, expansive land, a rolling river and, of course, a waterfall!
This the first pass of the island, so there’s a lot more we still need to do to get it ready. For example, we have a house and other various objects we need to place around the island. We also are currently working on way to portray nice flowing water. We even want to include waling paths around the island for those who have inhabited this place.
In the meantime, we’ve been working to improve flight by making it feel more fluid and responsive. It’s taking some time, but hopefully we’‘l have something to show you on that end soon!

Dragonflies - These cute little things can be found hanging around the Sakura Tree
Squirrels - The tree is also home for squirrels. Fun fact, the squirrels were originally brown, but we changed them to grey, because they were really hard to see on the brown tree. Who would have guessed? :P
Although we’ve been churning out a lot of cool assets recently, there’s not much time left to create, so we’re calling on the help of an outside art pack: The “POLYGON - Samurai Pack,” which can be found on the Unity asset store. Taking a few assets from this pack will let us fill out our islands and really make them feel alive and vibrant!
New Torii Gate Island is Here!
If you remember, the other week we created some concept art for the new Torii gate island...
Well, without further ado, here it is! The new Torii Gate Island, complete with a pond, trees, stairs, mountains, and last but not least, the Torii gates!
The island was created in Maya, and it started out as a single hexagon, before it was shaped and molded into the island you see here. And, with the help of the soft brush tool, the mountains were also formed.
Well, it looks like Tori’s already having some fun with it :D
New (new) Kami and Title Animation
We re-edited the kami (again) and now we’re feeling even better about it! We added some black strokes to make it pop more and just make generally easier to see.
Plus, we’re working on animating the title to look like it’s being painted right in front of your very eyes!
New Kami
What is that? Well, it’s the new kami, of course! Fly through this to bring new life to the world of Oto Kai! We’ve been messing around quite a bit with the way it looks recently, and we may change it again soon, but here’s our latest version!
Evolution of the Torii Gate Island. They grow up so fast :,)
This is the original Torii Gate Island, which we used to help present the concept of the game. This was created before we had our fantastic artist, Emmett, on the team! You may notice the water falling off the island. This is because we originally planned on having a pond resting beneath it, but that idea was cut.
Next, we have our Torii Gate Island V2! This island is complete with rocks surrounding the pond, to keep to keep those little fish safe, of course, as well as a generally higher artistic quality. Thanks Emmett!
And finally, here’s the map for Torii Gate Island V3, the final take on this classic island! This beauty includes a small koi pond surrounded by lovely trees, a trail of smaller torii gates leading up to the big one that we all know and love, and of course, all of this is nestled gently atop the land’s tallest mountain, which peaks its head up through the clouds.
