Arth-102 Final

For my final project, I decided to use elements from the Impressionism lesson & fauvism lesson. I painted a sunset over water with mountains & trees to add more scenes. I used nature elements that also have movement from Impressionism like Monet & Renoir for example. I think the sky & clouds especially portrayed movement in the painting. Along with this, I used elements from fauvism like bolder colors & brushwork. I think these characteristics added a lot to the painting because the colors were brighter and with the brushwork, they blended to make some quirky spots. This painting was super fun to create & this course has shown me how to be creative & grab a brush and see where it takes me! Even though it’s not perfect, this painting will definitely be hung in my house!

For this Dada assignment, I made a puppet character out of spring colors & materials. The body was cut out from a box of candy in an Easter egg type shape & the eyes are hersheys kisses. The mouth is flowers I had in my room and the skirt was a pretty purple trash bag. The song Candy is dancing to is Benny And The Jetts which reminds me of spring which is the vibe that I was trying to bring as she is a happy, positive personality puppet.

For this weeks project I made a necklace. This was made out of a cardboard box as the pendent, an avocado bag around the beads and a ribbon. The leaves are from a fake plant I found as pieces on the side. This was a fun week!

For the surrealism assignment I made a purse out of a goldfish box and an old purse strap I found in my room. By cutting a hole in the top of the box, it is accessible to put things in and take things out of and even wear it on your shoulder with the strap.

For this futurism assignment, I found a very interesting invention. 3D printed food that tastes like cake. There are researchers at Columbia University School of Engineering who have made a device that constructs cheesecake with 7 ingredients. Some of the ingredients that the researchers used were banana, jam, peanut butter, and Nutella. They create this with food inks and then use a laser to cook it. The most interesting part is that it actually tastes like cake that you can eat.

For the future I think that this could mean that people could access food quicker and easier. If you have allergies or restrictions, you could literally 3D print any food you want that fits your needs. This would be a bit help especially to people on the go but it would probably harm the restaurant industry because less people are buying food or going out to eat.

In my artwork I used the colors of the cheesecake to draw it & then do some little shapes as a border that matched the food.

Cubism

I had a lot of fun doing this assignment. I really like how we had to take three different pictures to show how our art developed and our thinking process. For me doing abstract assignments like these come much easier and allow me to be more creative!

For this Cubism assignment, I decided to sit down & draw different shapes with each color marker. With circles, squares, triangles, zig zags, and some random shapes I made my background. I then cut out some lace pieces from a magazine and centered them with some circles I drew to make an abstract type face.

For this Fauvist Portrait I drew my roommate Emmie. She has a very bright personality that I associate with the colors blue and green. I did the majority of this painting with those colors because she loves the outdoors, especially the beach (blues), and nature (green). Her personality radiates beach girl so I tried to use colors that would pass that feeling on. Her favorite color is also orange so I did her face with orange which I would also consider a bright bubbly color. My roommate is the colorful aura to my neutral colored aura so I wanted to represent that.

For my Impressionist assignment, I chose to use colored pencils to sketch a pose from the University of Minnesota at UDA nationals this year. I love to dance and this year at dance nationals, Minnesota brought to stage an unforgettable performance. They are always a team to watch and even though the team was not awarded with first place, I will never forget this dance because it was beautiful and inspired me as a dancer.

I chose to draw a portrait of Khloe Kardashian that has gotten a lot of attention for her lip injections. We all know the history of Kardashians using photoshop, facetune, and getting a lot of work done on their faces but this photo stuck out to me for the very dramatic lips that were so obviously injected many times.

For this artwork, I just did a plain drawing because I thought it would be fun to try something new, especially when the image is just a face. I drew exceptionally large lips to really highlight the edits I wanted to showcase. A simple drawing showed this more I think and was fun to try out! I feel that this was a great moment for this assignment.

This photo of Khloe Kardashian, along with all of the other photos the Kardashians put on the internet just show us how fake social media is. If the most famous people are putting out posts of their faces being highly edited and fake, they are setting beauty standards to be much higher and unattainable. This is detrimental to girls in our society’s mental health along with their mental health too. I think that as time goes on more people will be editing their photos even more. I think social media will keep advancing on setting unrealistic beauty standards & everyone needs to know that they are perfect just the way Jesus made them.

I chose to take inspiration from Caitlyn & Molly’s pieces that were both nature related. Both of these pieces used greens and browns and I took inspiration from Molly’s trees to create my own tree as the focal point of my painting. Caitlyn had a more earthy tone and feeling so experimenting with paints, I made a background that reflected that feeling of being one with the earth. This is one of my first times really using paints so trying different techniques was super fun! (Still a work in progress though haha)

Assignment 1: for this assignment I chose Zach Bryan’s album, The Great American Bar Scene. What I like about this album cover is that it’s filled with people who are enjoying each others company and smiling :) I chose to replicate this album as my own because this album came out mid-summer, when I was in Charlotte for the summer playing for a semi-pro soccer team. My friend Ava and I had this album on repeat when it came out, so now whenever I listen to it I am reminded of the many memories I made over the summer. To make it my own, I chose to draw 4 pictures from my summer that the songs reminded me of: my summer team, my family on vacation, my friend Ava, and Jesus😊 my favorite song from the album is “The Way Back”, and I added my favorite lyrics from that song onto my piece.

For this weeks assignment I created a pice inspired by the album old data in a new machine. I experimented with the color red and using a dark background so the red pops. I chose to go slightly more abstract with this and I used magazine cut outs, colored pencil, and black paper. The album is very noisy and upbeat, and I wanted to create the same effect in my artwork.

For this assignment I chose complimentary colors yellow and purple. For the outfit I cut out different pieces that I could see a current influencer wearing. A dress with white cowboy boots, a purse, and I added a phone in hand because most of our generation can’t survive without their phone. I made the background lighter so the outfit could pop out and be the main focus.

Arth-102 Viewing Art

For this first assignment I chose to take inspiration from Taylor Swift’s “Lover” album. The album cover uses colors blue, pink, and yellow as clouds to create a romantic sense so I used those colors to make a pink sky scene with magazine cut outs to make a more romantic sense.

Hey y'all, my name is Ella Steinwandel and I am from Buffalo New York. I'm the middle child of seven and my siblings are truly my best friends! I am a freshman marketing major at St. Bonaventure and this is my first post for ARTH-102! This summer I am studying abroad in Sorrento, Italy. I love to travel, run, and hang out with my family and friends in my free time. I also have a podcast that I love to talk and express myself on. I'm excited for this class, to learn more about art as I've always loved to create but never really had the talent.
