It Takes a Campus - 2011.

This very well may have been the last week I attended UCSD. When Do Ho Suh's Fallen Star was just hoisted onto Jacobs Hall. (Note the area still fenced off.) One of my favorite pieces in the Stuart Collection on campus.

Do Ho Suh’s Fallen Star is the 18th permanent sculpture commissioned by UCSD’s Stuart Collection. It reflects Suh’s on-going exploration of themes around the idea of home, cultural displacement, the perception of our surroundings, and how one constructs a memory of a space. His own feelings of displacement when he arrived in the U.S. from Seoul, Korea in 1991 to study led him to measure spaces in order to establish relationships with his new surroundings. He had to physically and mentally readjust.

La Mona (Tijuana III Millennium) - Armando Munoz Garcia.

Tijuana III Millennium, a 17 meter sculpture of a woman, now more commonly known as La Mona, will stand for her 25th year this March; her birthday is also the projected date to begin her restorations. The house in the background attached to La Mona was originally Garcia's parents' home. And inside the 5-story house that is La Mona, Garcia lived-- replete with a kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom (in her rear, of course).

Our visit to Colonia Aeropuerto, with Collectivo Ollin Calli, was an unexpected treat; an incredibly humbling and opportune experience. Here, La Mona stands with full sleeves and vibrant skin. International artists came together and dared to climb scaffolding to paint La Mona during a 3 day period, adding this bold layer to her skin (the most experienced painter who was to paint the highest peak of this sculpture-- her arm and hand-- actually stopped nearly halfway through for the obvious reason). After about five months of this phase of vibrancy, her skin is to be rejuvenated once again to a white slate in March. Another external 'dressing' she's undergone: seamstresses from LA tackled the sartorialist's feat of sewing her a dress to wear during Breast Cancer Awareness month. But before these phases, she remained white with a blue ribbon sashayed around her arm and wrist for decades.

Pictured above is the artist, himself. A spry, proud, humorous man who welcomed us onto his property and lent his time to discuss his creative process, the intentions and what La Mona has meant for him and the community.

Placed in this well-known worker's colonia, surrounded by the same history of nearly nonexistent waste management and proper irrigation, old tires stacked as retaining walls, tarmacs and garage doors built as the walls of homes , La Mona stands erect, resilient, and proud. And for 3 more months, she is vibrant and loud.
