it’s on his walk returning to the booth with the hose in one hand and an extra water gun in the other when he spots her. skye. walking alone and minding her own business. like how yeon should be minding his own business. but he really can’t help it. if there was any other talent yeon had aside from academics and sports, it was bothering people. mainly, his friends.

so he does what’s expected.

lifts the water gun. points it directly at skye. and shoots.

skye’s no party pooper and orientation day was admittedly better than being cooped up in classrooms , it was even a refreshing change from the never-ending frat parties. although , you’d never think that the junior actually enjoyed the festivities.. taking into consideration how she’d always been more of an observer.

but she’s here , in a little crop top , jeans shorts.. even putting in the effort with wearing her nice jacket because this year came with the added responsibility of being captain and partially incharge of the games hosted by the football team. skye had to look the part even though she wasn’t the most responsible when it came to these things.

but it explains the football tucked under her arm as she’s walking over to the field , a small wave to the ones who greet her enough indication that it’d been a good day so far.

cue that thought being watered down. literally. “ what the fuck— ” she exclaims with a step back before frantic eyes search for the culprit and a not so surprised sigh escapes her. “ of fucking course it’s you.. ” the captain counters with an attack of her own as she hurls the football towards other with restricted force.

“ — that’s probably the only way you can get me wet , huh yeon-ie? ” she teases with a smirk as footsteps make their way towards the younger because revenge hasn’t even been had yet.

if skye’s learned anything all these years is that.. people are stupid. in fact , she’s learnt this every step of the way. each of her mom’s boyfriend’s might as well have been walking around with a big L on their forehead because her mom also knew that people are stupid and she always went the extra mile of taking advantage of it. skye wasn’t an exception, though. she was just as stupid to have fallen for her mother’s empty promises and that’s when she realised that she’d much rather be on the other side.

eat or be eaten and what not.

middle school and then high school all followed with leaving a trail of gullible victims behind—but the point is that she recognises this behaviour, in herself and others, internally refers to her as a good judge of character and always sees the crossed fingers behind people’s back as they smile through their lies. but, says nothing because that’s not her shit to deal with , she has enough. gets close to doing the right thing more often now though, and that’s progress.

when it comes to her especially is when skye gets close and it’s the fear that seals her lips because yes, skye mae gets scared sometimes. don’t tell anyone. it’s never the fear of reaching out and offering a helping hand, it’s of her never taking it— and for as long as she could remember, there wasn’t much of skye without at least a little bit of alexis.

a long exhale, the smoke in her lungs escaping with it as she flicks off the burnt ash on her freshly lit cigarette, feet hanging below while she sat along the edge of the rooftop. her phone buzzed a few times but she couldn’t make the effort to check, it’d disturb the peace or.. something like that. besides, the only person she wanted to talk to right now was probably on her way.. as was tradition. meet at their spot at night every once in awhile where it’s just them.. like the good ole’ days.

“ didn’t think you’d come..” skye chuckles the minute she hears footsteps approaching, another drag as her face half turns to the new company. “ didn’t think i would either to be fair , i was supposed to be at practice but..” a little shrug because when was skye ever at team practices. pops open a fresh can of beer for her best friend and sets it down before finally taking a look, “ hey..”

it’d take a lot of fingers to count on the amount of parties skye’d been to , and it’s always the same fucking thing. which would be fine.. but, it’s starting to get too loud and the room’s starting to spin and faces are starting to get blurry and skye’s starting to suffocate.

ironically enough it’s the smoke that fills her lungs that allows her to breathe , away from the crowd, confined in the solitude of the relatively neat bathroom.. she of course, even in her daze managed to climb up a staircase and find the master that was fortunately untouched by the heathens drowning their sorrows in cheap booze. not that she was doing any better. insurmountable tolerance in hand, you’d only imagine the empty bottles, the burnt ash and a swallowed pill or two that had her stumbling over the sink for some sort of stability.

she was fine, though. it’s just classic skye is what everyone would think once they saw her down shot after shot, next day showing up to class as though she’d been tucked into bed at 9pm. so , yeah.. she was fine— she’d be fine. it’s what her mother taught her after all.

she chuckles weakly at the thought, body turning to lift herself up onto the counter, groaning at each failed attempt before she finally plopped on. hands reaching for the steal case stashed into the inside pocket of her jacket, fancy engraved lighter along with it and she sighs once again. wonders how her “family” was so intricately woven into her that no amount of the premium escapes money could buy ever even worked. she chuckles again before the tip of the rolled joint settles between her lips and she lights it up.

the marble below her still vibrates on account of the blaring music, but still, it feels calm— the perfect balance of not having to stay at home alone and not having to deal with the constant chatter around her.

speaking of... “ occupied. ” she says the minute the doorknob turns, not annoyed or anything, just tired enough to not want to deal with the efforts of conversation... scared of the things she’d say and not remember.

well , several places. thank you to mom who had it flowing in her veins in toxic amounts and who so graciously passed it down like you genetically pass down eye color. thank you to step-dad who had too much power and money and who... unwillingly passed it down like you pass down your kingdom to an unwanted heir. thank you to pretty privilege that had her demands met with a blink of an eye and thank you to the desensitisation towards emotion and any sense of consequence because skye was a lot.. but she was first and foremost a person with nothing to lose.

maybe that’s why she did it , — or maybe simply because the boy was cute. she’s callous enough in her choices to simply rely on face value , so the answer of why would lie as one of the world’s greatest mysteries. and he better not ask. — the boy in question sitting by his lonesome in an empty classroom , baring the ( what she thought was the ) , uncalled wrath of their english teacher. so , he had some pills and was selling it out to the kids.. big deal. it’s not like he was cheating on his wife and having an affair with their chemistry teacher ( skye’s observant and they were.. not so discreet ). point is , adults are hypocrites and she could’ve gotten out of this situation easy.

is that why she does it? — woman shrugging emoji.

“ it’s mine. ” bag plopped on the table beside , a rather louder than intended noise , as she took a seat beside the “culprit” and in front of the enraged middle-aged man. “ i musta’ left it on his table by accident.” she’s callous enough to speak with no remorse and that’s probably what sets him off even more. but for a minute he stands quiet , like he didn’t believe it and bang hansol had a track record of only making this harder. she rolls her eyes and groans. reaches into her bag and pulls out crumpled up notes of ₩ 50,000 like it’s chump change. “ money i made thanks to the bright students of your fine institution. ” looks at him expectedly , no one says anything.

“ go on.. tell him it’s not yours. ” she speaks to her fellow classmate this time , there’s an urgency to her voice like let’s get this over with. “ that i was the who was trying to sell it to you..? ” she helps him further and gives him the last chance of saving grace.

“We’ll be in the gallery by then, though, so I’ll take it with us.” A single nod, confirmatory mostly. He abandons his seat, collapses himself onto her couch instead, body outstretched in a lazy sprawl over the cushion, staring unseeingly at the ceiling.

“I don’t know if you’ve tried it already, but it does feel really good.” The blended fusion of lysergic acid diethylamide and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine. “There’s actually a group named after it. Candy Flip. Have you heard of them?” The tilt of his own head, smile emerging like a midday birdsong, gushing, gaze tethered to her with an ineludible commitment. “Their music’s really good, too. It’s got a kind of old school, electronic feel, you know? You might like it.”

“ candy flip. ” she tries on the words , it makes her scoff.. but not dismissively , it’s more like a little laugh. “ haven’t heard of it.. them. ” but she’s already looking them up on her phone , hitting the little heart that’ll later remind her to check them out. sunan’s a trustworthy enough source , reliable with his taste in music.. and a lot of other things too. like the little pill that was encompassed between digits , fiddling with it almost teasingly and building it up like an opening act before the main show. she acknowledged it with a nod.

he speaks and she listens , it’s how it’s been — but she’s in charge. it’s how it’s been. not that friendship should have leaders and followers and hierarchies , skye but it was a way for her to set the pace , cautious by nature and reluctant by experience. sunan hasn’t ever done anything wrong , though. he’s a sweet boy , pure intentions , colourful smile and an aberration in her otherwise monotone existence. she doesn’t hold their first meeting against him.. not anymore. it was always the child in her that expected the people to look at the world through her eyes ; things would’ve been so much easier and he wouldn’t have been gushing over her mom that held the paintbrush more than her own daughter.

but maybe she would’ve been just as offended if the artist in him didn’t extol her mother’s talent — at least her years of negligence could’ve been justified by a painted canvas and sometimes that was enough consolation. one thought never did last too long in her head and it almost made her feel bad for the poor soul sat in front of her.

maybe that’s why she did it back then , because she was easy to forget. instead , all the girl saw was a pariah that mimicked that irreparable look she wore and not much else. if he called it pity , she wouldn’t have shaken her head. if he called it a way for her to expiate her own sins , she wouldn’t have shaken her head.. but if he ever called it a mistake , she would’ve given her head a little turn to the left and then a turn to the right.

the metal clang rings through the room as she fiddles with the engraved lighter between her fingers and swivels in her chair to get a better view of the outside through the window. it does feel really good. sounds a lot like something she’d said to him that night at the party before placing a similar looking concoction on his tongue — he just looked like he needed the extra help, okay. and skye was feeling particularly generous that day. never knew they’d be sat here and he’d be returning the favour. makes her smile as she places the white filter of a cigarette between her lips. “ where did you hear about this place from, anyway? ” it’s cohesive enough , turns to look at him again before she flicks the metal gear and brings the flame to the end of her smoke, takes in a deep inhale and keeps it in a second longer while she moves to open the window before exhaling. sits perched on the concrete sill , honestly isn’t too interested in the answer because what difference would it have made.. skye would’ve gone anyway because sunan’s trustworthy enough. same reason she doesn’t ask the origin of the pill and it might’ve been odd that this was the first time she heard of it , if it hadn’t been hansol sitting in his arsenal. speaking of.. “ and he isn’t coming? ” it’s assumed at this point, really.

hyun squints into the darkness. this man looks familiar, he thinks. but he’s too sober to really see. he walks to the bed and sits on the edge. hyun pushes his fingers through the few strands stuck to the man’s forehead, pushes his hair back to see him. to really look at him. this close, the man’s gaze turns steely. this close, hyun figures out exactly who he is. this close, he can see the whip left on the bed, the little wired electrocution device on the bedside table. hyun laughs the same way he did when the door knob turned, as if a gambler that just got the best roll of his life.

hyun doesn’t know much, but this is what he knows. once upon a time, a deal turned wrong turned to him bleeding in a curb with a bruised rib. this man the one who called the hit, the one who called an ambulance and his mother for him. and maybe this isn’t really him—hyun isn’t much of a grudge-holder. but who he is is abstract and a grudge can be a tangible thing. and when you’re drowning, the only thing that’ll save you is something you can actually hold onto.

“skye,” he calls without turning his gaze away from the man in the bed, “lock the door.” he looks to her, pointing to the man in condescending recognition. knowing the world is small but not expecting any real answer when he asks her, “do you know who this is?”

skye always knows what she wants. she’s as fickle-minded as they come , moody to a level you just have to get used to ; but she knows what she wants. and if you saw her at the party she said she’d die before attending , maybe you were the problem. or maybe she changed her mind. or maybe she liked the idea of deceit. kang haneul knows what she wants but she’s not going to tell you that -- not when it’s so much more fun watching the wheels in your head turn trying to figure out this person who was someone completely different last tuesday.

a slight of hand , a magician holding all of your attention on his right fist , the one that was balled and housing your anticipation. fancy words and wave-y motions enough to fool any simpleton. but you see , the fingers lift.. slowly.. one at a time and you feel like your close , heart in your throat , you’ve cracked the code only to realise that you held your breathe for nothing when the palm shows empty and the finger points to your jacket pocket because the dice was already there. before the trick began , it had already ended. it knew where it had to end up. just like skye always knew what she wanted , but you don’t get to see that. you just see the hollow promises balled up in a fist.

it helps that consistency rings through her life. scheduled places and people -- well , it gets more convoluted with each passing hour but the starting line hardly changes. even the skye needs a bit of grounding. cha hyun just came along as the best byproduct of it.

maybe that’s not how she felt in this very moment because skye knows what she wants and he’s making her wait for it. hands shoved far into jacket pockets and she follows to wherever he leads , who’s house was this anyway? they’re obviously to blame for the maze they call home. just because you have the money , you don’t have to buy thing biggest thing you can find on the market -- and if you are buying.. maybe pick up some inspiration too.

oh wow , she’s been reduced to observing interiors , is that what’s happening now? “ hyun i’m-- ” she’s cut off when the fist comes up and hovers over her lips. eyebrow raised , she locks her gaze with the man. he laughs and she sighs and that has to be a good enough blow because that’s what he was getting. it didn’t open and later he’d blame her for not putting some thought into it -- so this time she does. eyes still on him and an amused smile before she rounds cherry red lips and gives a good exhale.

what d’ya know? maybe luck really is a thing. the child-like excitement on him is enough to earn a little laugh.. more like a small smile and sharp huff , but she was going sober right now and every reaction was taking it out of her. skye shuts the door behind them , instinctively locks it too. no one wants the awkward confrontation of two people stumbling in with the hopes of a quiet room to do what people do in a room at a party. doesn’t turn to her friend just yet , she shrugs off her jacket and places it on the little table before finally getting a good look around and-- “ oh what the fuck..” she almost squints at the prepped man on the bed, in disgust , surprise , or maybe just hoping to see less of him.

takes a step closer , nods at hyun’s request while her gaze stays on the stranger... only , it’s not a stranger. “ no fucking way.. ” she’s standing beside him now , takes one final look and breaks into a proper laugh this time. a finger slides down the side of his face and by the way the older man jerks to the side to get as away from her as he could , skye knows he knows. he remembers. “ oh , we go way back , don’t we? i’ll tell my mom you said hi. ” another scoff and she’s back to taking her place beside the one she came with. “ let’s just say.. we’re not best friends. --- but wait , do you know him? ”

── living in the ruins of a palace in my dreams , and you know we’re on each other’s team.

everything about the college dream is here to set you up for failure. which is tragic because well , back up a couple o’ years and skye’s a kid waiting to grow up. skye’s a kid who’s living each year in hopes of the next one , living six years old waiting for eight so she can take better care of her mom. living eight waiting for ten so her mother buys that very elaborate art set-up they saw in the window of shop. living ten waiting for twelve so she can finally go to middle school and hang with the cool kids. living twelve waiting for sixteen because middle school’s fucking boring and everyone knows high school is where you wanna be. she’s living... what was it? sixteen? seventeen? eighteen? right.. she spent most of those years between smoke or between sheets and admittedly forgot about the whole waiting for a future.

but it all came back rushing a few days into college. she’s supposed to be having the time of her life because.. college dream. but remember , everything about the college dream is here to set you up for failure. it no longer encapsulates the greatest years of youth , but is merely a way to stay suspended in the middle of this hoax of a reality. get high , do whatever , take zero responsibility and conveniently blame it on the said college dream --- and that’s why it sets you up for failure. you never want to leave.

expect ; that’s what high school was. except that’s what every day for the past couple of years had been. except she wasted all her good years and now it was a hamster incessantly running on it’s wheel with no real place to to go but despite knowing that , skye was still here, wasn’t she?

no matter the amount of times she rolled her eyes at the idea of a private house party because jae-hoon’s parents were out of town and jae-hoon wanted to check every stereotypical college kid cliche in the book and jae-hoon had too much time and money on his hands and jae-hoon was a class a chad who made promises like ‘ a night you’ll never forget. ’ .. which is hard to believe considering the amount of white powder being lined on the table with the platinum credit card that could’ve been anyone’s in the room. or the expensive whiskey that everyone only pretended to appreciate but downed like it was dollar-store vodka. the amount of people could be counted on two hands.. it was a private , close friends thing only.. but the empty bottles however , could not.

how’s skye doing in all of this? -- now she loves a rager as much as the next university student with low morals and a high tolerance ; the sleazy music and even sleazier lighting was a bit too much , yes.. but other than that? decent party. it’s... fine. she’ll give a cursory nod and smile as they clink their drinks , she’ll offer a light to the classmate she’s never met before and she’ll even flirt with the girl who’s been sending her signals from across the room all night.

it’s... fine. --- only , fine meant boring here. too much of anything was headache inducing and everything about the night seemed.. too much. the woman’s leaning by the ajar window , away from the action of it all with an unlit joint being rolled between her fingers , looks to be in the midst of questioning some pivotal life choices , but really is just wishing for a saving grace. now , skye was never a party pooper.. so it’s hard to tell why she’s acting like one. doesn’t even pay attention to the crowd getting louder when the door opens and shuts , doesn’t double back to the see when they almost silence and heels echo across the room , doesn’t do anything but turn to the outside view and finally light the hazard sitting between two fingers.

the air shifts and maybe it’s cause of the fumes around her , maybe it’s coming from the outside or maybe it’s something.. in this very room. she has to look , confirm if it was only her dazed mind playing tricks or if it was... “ hyojoo..? ”
