being the daughter of palmview's it couple (a nickname coined by herself, at age 8) was the best thing bella could have asked for. she grew up surrounding by love and support, and watched her parents build a community that often felt like a safety net for her as well. despite being more on the quiet side, she bloomed. anyone would, with all the right circumstances. isabella had amazing grades, often being at the top of her class, amazing friends and an amazing family.
one of those friends was, of course, more special than the others. she and the other girl were inseparable for as long as any one could remember. when the time came, they even went to the same university in miami and lived together. (death and medical malpractice tw) a year after they finished their undergraduate degrees, isabella's friend died unexpectedly at their home and despite bella's efforts to keep her breathing, weeks after getting a thorough medical check-up and being sent back with the words "there's nothing to worry about". bella had graduated with a public health degree and was a year into medical school when it happened and, as much as she tried to, couldn't keep going. after losing her best friend, there was no dealing with the fact that she would be experiencing something similar firsthand, again and again, if she were to become a doctor. she needed a new plan and she also needed people, as their apartment and life in miami had become utterly lonely.
she moved back to palmview three years ago, to be near her family and closed ones, and turned to law school instead, determined to make so that no one would ever pay for a doctor's mistake again, not on her watch. for the next three years, she did school along with part time jobs and rebuild herself.
she's been working at the hospital for almost a year now, still being mentored by a more experienced lawyer on the actual malpractice investigations and trials that happen every now and then, but mostly in advisory and risk management roles within the hospital's administration.

living arrangements: bella tried to live by herself right upon moving back to palmview but after weeks of constantly spending time in family and friend's homes during the day and calling her parents in the middle of the night to calm her down after nightmares, they decided it would be best for her to spend some time with them in mango bay. she lived with valé and nora for six months before getting her own bungalow in seaglass gardens.
sexuality: isabella was always sure she was straight. she'd liked and dated boys before, so why wouldn't she be? growing up in the herrera household, there were very open conversations about different sexual and romantic orientations, but bella never thought they applied to her in particular, despite the couple girls she'd kissed in truth or dare games and parties in college. but lately, something is making her wonder. the older she gets, the more she compares the relationships around her, and notices how different they seem to her past ones with men. she thinks about her late friend, whom she loved so much and couldn't imagine life without. she thinks about how she sees some women now and how her thoughts and dreams try to tell her things. but then she also thinks about how she's too old to be figuring this out, despite knowing there's no right age to learn how to be true to yourself. she's dated men before, but now she's not so sure if she's ever felt anything for them.
mental health: she still has nightmares and panic/anxiety attacks about what happened to her friend, but they're not nearly as bad and don't happen that often as they did years ago; they mostly happen when on important dates (her birthday and death anniversary) or when she goes too many days without enough sleep. bella usually calms herself down or calls/texts family or close friends when it happens.

"hmm..." she stops for a minute, taking her focus away to her own design to check out nalini's options. "isn't this mug a recipe for disaster? i'd be spilling everywhere. the grater just scratches my brain in all the right places, you know?" she turned back to her designs, showing her options to the other woman. "i have to say..." quintessa starts as she browses through the orchids, gerbera daisies and sunflowers, looking around and contemplating to herself which one would be great to have at home this time. it was one of the things that grounds her, keeps the captain calm, given how her line of work is the definition of total non-stop action every single day of her life ever since she has chosen the path of being a firefighter. "i do through every week, for many years of my life and i still struggle to choose which one to have every single time." she now picks a bouquet of snapdragons and lisianthus on the other. "i just have to ask this time, which one would you prefer between the two?"
to be honest, bella still had retained little to no information about plants, even though she'd been living in seaglass gardens for more than two years at this point and that it was probably the spot with most communal gardens in the whole town. but she couldn't say no to quintessa's invitation, so there she was.
"well, considering i'll be staring at them every time you have your curtains open, turns out i'm the best person to ask." she joked, a chuckle escaping her lips. her gaze went back and forth between the two options, settling for the lisianthus. "i'm feeling this one. but nothing' stopping you from taking both."
did sully need a pet? would natalia even let him bring one back into the apartment? the answer to both of those was no, probably not - but it didn't hurt to look, did it? and, well, honestly, she'd probably be happier with him bringing a puppy home, than a baby, like he'd been trying to make happen. ...maybe a little belated birthday present?
sully coos as he scoops what appears to be some kind of beagle mix up into his arms, already plotting out how he can try and sneak the puppy into the apartment without natalia noticing. "look at her. like snoopy! i call dibs, she's mine now, no one can have her." sure, she was the first dog he'd picked up - first one he'd even looked at, but his mind was already made up. ...unless maybe she needed a friend to go along with her...
bella had been thinking for a while that only babysitting some pets from the neighbourhood was barely enough, so finding the time to stop by the adoption event was actually a requirement for the week. she'd heard about the cat distribution system theory and was rather disappointed none of the kittens seemed to have chosen her, so she decided the dogs could cheer her up.
until she heard a familiar voice out of the blue and suddenly the puppy was the most she could see in front of her. "what the hell? you scared me!" she exclaimed, but the smile was already on her face. the dog was pretty cute. "okay, wait, you don't even know if they'll accept you yet. don't you have to be deemed...responsible to adopt a pet?"
