Most insane pipeline known to man:
Help your younger sister pass her university assignment -> Accidently end up as a part of the rebellion to overthrow the tyrannical president
“sotr is mid because you already know how it ends” shut the fuck up, the point of the book is that despite knowing how it ends you would have never known what actually went down because that’s the point of propaganda, the whole book is about the power of propaganda
can’t believe suzanne collins called north america “a land full of Capitols” in tbosas and set the reaping on the fourth of july and people still don’t get that the hunger games is a critique of american capitalism. how much more direct is she gonna be in sunrise on the reaping.
She really said, oh I wasn’t clear enough? And then proceeded to beat the facts into the reader in SotR. Punch after punch after punch.
I don’t know how some people miss that we as the audience of this book HAVE MOST IN COMMON WITH THE CAPITAL!!! If you live in a developed country specifically in the USA chances are your problems sound a lot more like the people from the capitals than the people from the districts! The homework and the unruly coworkers and worrying about what your plans are for your birthday, most of us do not face the genuine poverty that is ever present in most of the districts. And by adding that line about “a land full of capitals” she is encouraging you to think about where our “districts” are, where are our resources coming from, who is producing it, how much of our news do we trust? It’s such good writing.
i love her your honour
Implying that she knows pretty tributes like Maysilee get prostituted by Snow if they win, and then actively wishing it happens to a tribute she reaped is so evil and insidious.
Real exhibition of the contempt capitolites have for the districts.
My immediate first thought when Drusilla said this was Finnick and Johanna... Especially with how similar i feel Maysilee and Johanna are.
And to wish that on a pretty 16yo because she wont let your insecure ass bully her as shes on her way to likely die... Like at least Effie uses her feigned ignorance to help, or she thinks shes trying to help. Drusilla is just evil and truly revels in the misery she marches these kids to.
"I first saw the girl at the Hob when she was just a baby. Burdock was so proud of her, he toted her around everywhere. After he died in that mine explosion, she started coming alone, trading the odd squirrel or rabbit. Tough and smart, her hair in two braids then, reminding me for all the world of Louella McCoy, my sweetheart of old. And after she volunteered for the Games, that nickname couldn’t help but slip out." - Haymitch Abernathy, Sunrise on the Reaping.
Lucy Gray should be proud to know she haunted that evil man every damn day of his fucking miserable life
Thinking about Maysilee Donner. A girl who refused to let the Capitol dehumanize her. A girl who wanted to die with dignity, without begging for her life, because that mattered to her. Who set up a place setting with napkins and forks in the middle of the arena because she is a human being. Who loved jewelry and fashion and believed that her appearance sends a message about who she is, and who wanted that message to be respectable, dignified, worth something.
Thinking about Maysilee Donner who was unafraid to slap the woman who pulled her name in the reaping and who threw clever insults towards anyone who provoked her, no matter who they were. Maysilee Donner who believed human dignity is inherent but respect is earned and who refused to give respect to those who did not deserve it.
Maysilee Donner whose father threw money at the reaping stage as if that could save her, and the money floated to the ground just like the confetti, meaningless paper that signified nothing when placed against the power of the Capitol. Whose privilege could not save her. Who recognized that reality and faced it with more fortitude than any person should ever have to display. Maysilee Donner.
lucy gray taking a bow after her reaping song. haymitch applauding snow while presenting him with louella’s corpse. katniss twirling around in a flaming dress in front of the entire country. peeta painting a portrait of rue for the gamemakers.
district twelve really said, “you want a show? we’ll give you a show.”
Suzanne Collins number one Maysilee Donner defender
“She remembers who the enemy is” Suzanne here directly confirming that SOTR is a direct prequel to Catching Fire • really makes SOTR so near and dear to my heart bc catching fire was always my favorite book
haymitch saying “I don’t drink” hahaha so funny I have a gun in my mouth
“Foreshadowing is a narrative device—“
Effie is actually not fanservice because she is important to the theme of propaganda in SOTR
Effie is 100% brainwashed AND YET she still hasn't lost her humanity. She believes propaganda completely AND YET she doesn't use it as an excuse to abuse people. Throughout the book, the tributes are constantly dehumanised. But Effie doesn't treat Haymitch that way. She helps the team. She's there for him in the launch room- which Drusilla and so many Capitol citizens would never do.
So there really is no excuse for abusing people, not even "I was lied to" or "i thought i was in the right" or "I was fed propaganda"
You still choose how you interact with people around you and how you treat them.
Thanks for coming 2 my TED talk.
shout out to suzanne collins for, in the middle of Everything Else she was doing in sotr, dropping a paragraph that’s just “btw fuck ai”
Ngl, I read that and started hootin and hollerin' in my bathroom (I listened to the audiobook)
I wish Maysilee Donner would've met President Snow. He wouldve said some corny shit like "Snow lands on top" and she would've eaten the words and chewed them right back up so nasty that he would've been so ashamed to say them ever again.
The beef between Haymitch and Snow is so funny. The way Haymitch drank an entire pitcher of milk just so Snow wouldn't get any, so Snow kept supplying him milk throughout his entire stay in the Capitol after his victory... bro what are you doing you're the president of Panem😭
i saw someone say that snow was giving him the milk and bread to make sure he didn't die from the gumdrops and had to watch lenore dove die... I'm going to be sick
so you’re telling me that after what happened to louella/lou lou haymitch had to watch peeta come back from the capitol as a “mutt version of himself” and question whether the shell of a human with peeta’s face was even peeta at all
and he had to do all that SOBER???
