My limits re: requests are fairly standard. My only unusual thing(?) is that I prefer to write the Reader/MC as being vague re: their physical attributes and I do not feel comfortable answering requests for self-inserts or oc-inserts. Thanks for understanding! My hard limits are: I do not depict non-con, underage characters in adult situations, or vomit/bathroom play. If I am not comfortable with a prompt, I will respectfully decline, no bad vibes from me. If necessary, I will decline using #toxintouchask posted under a read more. <- only thing I use that tag for, tryna stay subtle when I have to turn folks down.

As a big name etymology nerd, it was driving me absolutely 🕵️ when I couldn’t find the origins for Kuras’ name. I knew there was something out there to find when I heard that Kuras “has a very deliberately chosen name.” [Link to Youtube video/statement source, timestamp 41:15]. But then I realized that I was trying to find a single word when there was a piece of his name that I've heard before!

TLDR; I posit that Kuras’ name is Sumerian in origin.

My theory is that Kuras’ name is a combination of the Sumerian words Kur and Aš.

Lo and behold! Pronunciation checks out!

š has a pronunciation: like “sh” in “shine” (I've also seen Aš transliterated as “ash”.)

Linguistic Background: The Sumerian language is credited as the oldest documented form of writing and the region from which it originates is frequently referred to as the ‘birthplace of human civilization*’. I have a lot of babbling to do re: Sumerian myths and Touchstarved but for this post I'll stick to translations.

But suffice to say this fits as another piece of the puzzle in my mind. Seems fitting, considering Kuras is…Kuras. Birthdate is literally the first day of the calendar, etc.

Translation-wise, I will start with Aš, as there are fewer meanings to sift through.

aš: one; unique; alone.

aš: spider.

áš: noun, wish; curse [AŠ archaic frequency:] verb, to desire; to curse.

You’ll recall that Mhin said Kuras was a one of a kind, entirely unique. A clue, perhaps?

I think any and all of these meanings could apply to Kuras, but the fact that the word “curse” popped up had me locked in.

Translating “Kur” is a little more difficult. Not that a translation is unavailable, but rather that many translations are available. Notably, however, Kur is the world from the Sumerian Underworld or Netherworld.

kur: n., mountain; highland; (foreign) land; the netherworld (*as in the afterlife–note that this is without connotation of heaven or hell.)

kur: v., to reach, attain; to kindle; to rise (sun). kúr[PAB]: n., stranger; enemy; hostility (from kur,'mountains, foreign land'). v., to be different; to change; to break a seal (often with -da-) (kúr-re in marû). adj., strange, alien; hostile; in the future. ; to turn round, turn into, transform

...Lots of ways to read these meanings together! Cursed the land? Cursed (to be in) the (literal) under-world aka cast out of heaven?! Kuras was the cause of the shroud coming down and the Soulless are the withered remains of his angel siblings lol Kuras committed The Original Sin?? Kuras is the origin of the curse??

Ooo! I can't decide so I'll just do both. >:3 Mhin:

Mhin is the type of person to over-intellectualize art and feel uncomfortable interacting with it on anything but a practical level. They will resist the idea that they should be open to exploring 'the themes of the artwork' if pressed. They can understand that there is value in being able to draw realistically. Anatomical and alchemical diagrams are useful in a very tangible way - and portraiture obviously takes skill - but if you ask them anything about the emotional aspect of the art, they will stubbornly shut the conversation down. (Also they won't be complimenting Vere under any circumstance. Not even by accident.) Similarly, Mhin is the type to rally against the idea that they are creative. If Mhin has a good idea, it came from their base of knowledge being applied to the problem, not their "imagination."

Atheris:

Besides being really interested in music as an art, they like to embroider their own clothing! (And maybe if they became attached to someone, they might...) They prefer to embark on embroidery projects that have symbolism attached. If no one around can really determine what that symbolism means...it's probably for the best. In fact, that's better.

That song really fits the siren-like attitude of Ais at the seaspring.

This is just one the multiple nightmares of Scarlet deciding to go for a drink. It's not like she wants to it's more likely... Somewhere in her mind a voice tells her that she must.

A fate that was result of someone else's will. Gods playing and turning her into a puppet that needs to reveal real Ais' motives and powers. As a lost oracle... Unnamed... She finds herself in a little war that she didn't ask for and as time passes by the thoughts get worse and worse.

Cursed and manipulated, Scarlet tries to do her own choices and live normally. The encounter with these monsters gave her a little hope.

Still she's councious that the price might be high.

📿 Faith: Prior to the realization that their hands were cursed instead of holy, Atheris felt very at peace with the idea that their Oracle visions were beyond explanation. Since learning the truth, they've found themself trying to unravel all of the things they never questioned. When they consider the idea that their visions may have a source, they find themself filled with an inexplicable dread. If the thought ever bubbles up, they push it back down immediately, though the feeling of something perceiving them lingers...

(As if something noticed that they cast their gaze in its direction and turned its eyes on them in return.)

💔 Sad: As a child, Atheris usually had to find games and activities to play alone for a multitude of reasons. However, they did have a favorite game that their attendants would play with them. The attendants would ask them to locate random objects. (Extreme hotter-colder! With precognition!)

I'll put the next bit under cut with a light CW just in case.

Initially, they were asked to find familiar things that they knew well. Things that had been intentionally hidden by their handlers nearby. As they grew older, objects of greater value "hidden" further away were described to them. As the objects their attendants searched for increased in value, it became more important not to be distracted.

Luckily, there was an empty room all set up where they can think for as long as it takes! Don't think of it as solitary confinement, think of it as a fun new rule! :)

I thought of something. So we know that Vere has a longer lifespan than the average human, right?

A snapshot several decades later — the larger part of a century, really — Vere looks pretty much the same as he did the day you met. Maybe he’s wearing his hair differently nowadays, faint crow’s feet and smile lines finally beginning to show on his face but aside from that, he is mostly unchanged in appearance. He walks through the halls of a place he’s called home for…a long time now. There’s the broken lute neither of you ever got around to throwing out from when you first tried your hand at replicating the music of his favourite Hightown lutist. Cupboards and drawers filled with his art supplies, your gloves, rolls of spare linen he’s swiped from the Lowtown clinic ages ago. The walls are adorned with his best drawings — many of them are safely kept in his sketchbooks, but there are many he’s proud enough to display in the open. Several of them are portraits of you over the years. He can’t find it in himself to take them down yet. There are so many other memories, relics of the love the two of you have shared over the years strewn throughout your home.

He makes his way to the kitchen where his fruit oolong tea has been cooling on the counter and begins to whip up a new monstrosity of a meal. His neck and chest are bare from the collar and harness that has been forcibly imposed onto him a century ago. Actually, only one thing adorns his neck now — a necklace fashioned from the ribbon in your handfasting ceremony. You made it into a necklace for your first anniversary together. He hasn’t taken it off all this time. Still fiddles with it when deep in thought, a habit that carried over from his years in chains.

Sometimes he finds it deeply unjust that he’s lived more years in chains than he’s lived with you — his anger and bloodlust briefly soothed with the knowledge that eventually…the years he’s spent in hell will be surpassed by the number of years he’s spent loving you.

The idea that Vere would have spent more time (centuries even?) chained than he does with the MC... But also that he holds such high value for the time he did get with them...his anger would be so hot and cold, tempered by the memories of his beloved despite the fact that there's a part of him that wants to lash out and burn it all down. But that's not who he is anymore, after sharing a piece of their lifetime.
