Kingdom of Othrys Masterlist!

Well, if you've happened upon this odd little blog, you'll probably need to know what you're getting into before you delve in.

Essentially, what we have here is an AU of Tangled. Movie, show, all of it. In theory, it follows the same general plot as Tangled. The central difference, however, is that all the characters (and a good bit of the worldbuilding) are from my stories.

Of which there are way too many.

I know it's extremely random and niche, but I've been having fun with it, and so has my sister. So I'm gonna keep at it for the time being.

Though there are numerous side characters, the main people we follow are the cheery monster prince Naphtali, his clever best friend Baron (ex magic thief), and the rather solemn handmaiden Melisande. They tell the ghostly, wintry tale from its beginning to... well, hopefully the end. Eventually.

I'm back! And with a bit from "Be Very Afraid" (as requested by @katiethedane12)

So the soldier is Travers (who I've talked about before). The other guy is Amazu, who is a "spirit" of sorts and part of a trio of ghosts called the Band (equivalent to the Pub Thugs).

In the episode, the red rocks only affect living humans (not ghosts or whatever Amazu is). Travers, however, has been doing business as usual all day, running the stuff for the show and keeping things going as smoothly as possible. He seems like he's unaffected, or else completely fearless.

But, as Amazu discovers, that couldn't be further from the truth...

I wrote Lia to be the Adira (kind of - there's technically two characters for Adira), but the ways she's similar personality-wise are... kinda unique.

Like, yeah, she acts kinda like she's above people, but it's not because "oh I'm better than everybody". More of a "I've seen a thousand years' worth of history, so everyday living mortals are insignificant to me" type.

And yeah, she wants to stop the stones from getting into the wrong hands. But she's not really concerned with the humans she has to work with. It's the overarching scope of history she's looking at, not the faces in front of her.

She's like a post-millenialist gone wrong, to be honest.

Now being mom to a baby boy myself, the thought of little Naphtali being violently stolen from his parents and mistreated by Salome absolutely wrenches my heart, I am going to hunt her down

Probably not until Baby is older. They would definitely try their best, but neither of them has much experience with babies, and one of them is a literal chameleon. (They would be good visitors for Baby - playing and being sweet and all - but not good sitters, who are solely responsible for taking care of Baby. They'd have no idea.)

When Baby is older, though, like a kid? Depends on where the babysitting is happening.

Like, in my house? Yes. In the lighthouse tower? Maybe, but I don't like the edge of that lighthouse. Probably not, actually. Anywhere else? I think he would most likely lose Baby very quickly unless Persa was also keeping an eye on things.

If I were making an element-wielder story, I'd switch things up a bit:

Fire-wielders would be native to the coldest, snowiest places

Water-wielders in the deserts

Earth-wielders in archipelagos, swamps, etc.?

Air-wielders are miners and mountain-dwellers, both in the caves and on the heights

Because while it's cool to be able to control the most common and readily-available element around you... Humans can do that with plain old skill and ingenuity. If I lived in a hostile environment and had the option of a little magical bonus, I'd channel it into controlling the thing I needed and didn't have.

Live in the freaking Arctic Circle? Controlling ice gets you structures, but being able to summon fire gets you life

In a hot, dry environment? Being able to pull water out of the air or soil would be incredibly important

I'm not sure exactly what environment would need earth the most, but one where you couldn't trust solid ground to provide itself seems like a good candidate. Also good for finding save channels when sailing!

If you live inside or on top of a mountain... Sure, controlling stone and earth would be nice, but being able to summon and/or clean your own air supply is priceless (not to mention, if you can sense airflow, you can always find your way out)

Of course, this also means that when an element-wielder travels to someone else's environment... They become incredibly OP. It's like they trained their muscles in triple gravity and now suddenly they're on Mars. So much potential there too, though...

In a war, for instance, the invaders would definitely have the aggressive upper hand--BUT they don't have the survival advantages of the defenders (elementally OR in terms of what environment their culture's adapted for). You could do a LOT with that, I think.

Naphtali's main thing has always been fire and light, even outside of the AU, but it's just hitting me how fitting that is with this concept of element powers BECAUSE! The story happens in winter! Every vibe of this thing is thoroughly wintry! So putting a firelight guy in the middle of that is very interesting.

(Also makes me think of "never we know but in sleet and snow the place where the great fires are", which is a big part of this AU as well)

I'm not sure about this, but I'm thinking about having Naphtali's birthday in the AU being like, a few days before Christmas. Which they do in fact celebrate, because I said so.

In Othrys, the tradition of the lanterns would be sort of the first herald of the coming day, so to speak. It ends up being almost a tradition for the other kingdoms as well, because the lanterns appear in their skies even closer to Christmas! It's probably a little different by the time of the story, because of the lost prince still being lost, but it's still a cool tradition for most of them.

Naphtali has no idea, though. Salome already hides Naphtali's birthday from him (so he doesn't get any ideas about his past), but I bet she hides Christmas too. Just one of those things.

(Also, a note for later in the story: this makes the "Goodwill Festival" stuff a part of their Christmas celebrations, like their Twelfth Night event or something. In S2, they even end up introducing it in... well, whatever ends up being Vardaros.)

The only thing is the date. Canonically, Naphtali was born in January, so I don't know if I would change his birthday to December, or their Christmas to January, or just make completely different months.

I'm probably overthinking it. Either way, his birthday is the 20th, and Christmas is the 25th, whatever the months.

This here. This is the AU. Because I accidentally packed a lot of emotional devastation in this thing, but also. The whole concept is some of the most ridiculous nonsense I've ever come up with, when you look at the whole thing.

As far as what's written? Chapter 7 is kind of the sharpest example of it, I think. Because that's how you get both the Box and Dork-a-Dust within pages of each other.

Also, as shown in the previous post, Book One is much more of the former, whereas Book Two is very much the latter. It's all in the narrators.

The crazy thing is, this first book of the story is like, all wintry and dark and total vibes and pretty much not even the same story in parts. But then the next book has musical numbers.
