analysis and themes are insane bc you can stumble upon them. like "fusion" is actually one of my favourite star trek episodes due to the way the viewer is essentially made complicit in tolaris' assault of t'pol. it is a very uncomfortable episode, because everything we find out about t'pol is against her will. the framing of the episode as a t'pol backstory/characterisation episode makes us, the viewer, as interested and hungry to know those parts of t'pol she keeps to herself, and watching her memories now feels voyeuristic. there's something there about t'pol ultimately being just a character whose womanhood is there to be leered at, parts of her only there as much for our entertainment as tolaris'.

i really don't think the writers intended that level of meta commentary and consciously went for that framing, though. they just stumbled into it through jolene's beautiful acting
