The Last Dragon

The Mummy gets a 7.1 out of 10. An American from the French Foreign Legion, a librarian, and her brother travel to the Egyptian city of Hamunaptra to recover a lost artifact but in the process, awaken an ancient mummy. Even though this film can not top the classic 1932 The Mummy with Boris Karloff, it still does a great job of rebooting the film. Fellow cinephiles know why Universal Studios classic monster movie The Mummy was so enjoyable, but this reboot will appeal to a wider audience. One part of this movie that a lot of people will appreciate is the action. Brendan Fraser, who used to be a way bigger star than he is today, was the one of the main reason why the action was so well done. His character definitely got the coolest action sequences, and rightfully so. Fraser was a nice choice for the role of Rick O'Connell because he was very easily able to encompass the character’s suave and almost cocky attitude, while still making the character an action hero. Even though Rachel Weisz sort of played the damsel in distress named Evy, she was still a LIKABLE character that had a few moments where she kicked ass. Her character’s brother named Jonathan, played by John Hannah, was added as the comic relief and thankfully the comedy felt very natural rather than forced. While the protagonists each added something different to the movie, the protagonist named Imhotep, played by Arnold Vosloo, was one of the best parts of the whole movie. The story surrounding his character created a great backstory as the villain which made his character seem even scarier. While the story does share a lot in common with the 1932 version, it is not exactly the same. I liked that this film showed Imhotep not only after he was mummified, but before as well. That means that we not only see archaeologists digging up artifacts, but we also get to see what they looked like before thy were sealed inside tombs for thousands of years. The film may not be that scary by today’s standards, but it still succeeds in being SUSPENSEFUL. Like I said above, this reboot really is ACTION PACKED and in a movie like this, CGI really helps filmmakers bring their ideas to life. While today viewers can tell when CGI is being used in the movie, the CGI for the time is not half bad. I really think that this first Mummy remake is not only the best in the trilogy, but a very successful attempt to reboot a classic Universal Studios monster movie. I recommend you BUY IT and also buy the original 1932 The Mummy with Boris Karloff. Nothing after the credits. Fezzes are cool!
