Minako appreciation post
Look, we all joke in the YOI fandom that when Victor says he was drawn to Yuri because of the way his ābody moves to the musicā he means WHEN YURI IS STRIPPING WITH A POLE, but Iām starting to feel like when we do that, weāre a) treating Victor like a bimbo and b) buying Yuriās line that heās just another dime-a-dozen skater.
Letās not forget this glimpse we have here in the very first episode, of Victor in the hallway, right before he goes out and performs a routine that wins him his fifth consecutive Worlds title. Whatās he doing? RUNNING OVER A STEP SEQUENCE.
Yuri never has to run over his step sequences. Before he performs, heās busy psyching himself up, trying not to panic (which will make him ruin his jumps).
And letās not forget itās his performing, his step sequences, that get him Yurioās attention as well.
Yuri is a beautiful skater. The end.
i present to you: the story behind victor ditching his long hair
Neither of them can handle their alcohol. But they are in love, so itās ok.
Drunken, married ice dorks for the lovely @letsglamourcharm. Thank you for commissioning me!! <3 Especially since Yuuri on ice gives me life.
young victor had painted nailsā¦. a good thought
We call everything on the ice āloveā
im not used to drawing them yet so forgive the mistakes haha
based on this postĀ
commissionĀ ?
āwhen i first met him⦠he was like a little boy running through the swiss meadowsā
edit: i accidentally posted the second frame twice at firstā¦
I love how this episode finally showed us how much of an unreliable narrator Yuri has been like⦠The first ep we saw showed him last year chickening out in front of Victor and running away, thinking heād spoiled his chance to meet his idol. Then this episode comes out and itās likeā¦. boy no you got drunk, had a dance off that included mostly-nude pole dancing, then begged Victor to coach you as he flat out fell for you like Russian Icarus getting too close to the light in your eyes
I absolutely love this though because, Yuuri has been an unreliable narrator right from the beginning.
Heās always described himself as a mediocre third-rate skater⦠but he qualified for the Grand Prix Final last year, so he had to have medaled a LOT to pull that off. Heās intimidated by Minami who beat him the previous year because Minami is obviously a superior skater⦠but Minami looks up to Yuuri as an inspiration for skating. He describes himself as a disappoint and a failure, but background shots of his familyās inn show that he has a crap ton of trophies, and his entire home town thinks heās a hero.
And now, at long last, the show has given us the biggest twist yet. Yuuri has convinced the entire Ā audience that Victor is the desirable one, Victor is the catch, Victor is the unattainable idol to be pursued, but heās not.
This whole time, Victorās been the admirer, the one doing the chasing. And neither Yuuri nor the audience had realized that until now.
squintsā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦..i think ive figured out how i want to draw them nowā¦i think
Small, slightly obscure, but really cool thing that happens in episode 1 of Yuri!!! On Ice that I donāt think a lot of people caught:
The snow.
They probably werenāt watching the weather forecast there in the first two shots, they were watching the news. This cold front came literally out of nowhere, as, like the announcer says, it was supposedĀ to be a perfect day for hanami, ergo going for a picnic to watch the cherry blossoms. But instead, lots of snow.
Now, for those of you who live in colder areas, like myself, you probably just wentĀ āwell, unseasonal snow happens sometimes, I remember once we had snow in mid-May.ā
For those of you who live in warmer areas, you probably wentĀ āidk how snow works, so I guess that sounds legit???ā
No.
Snow in April on fuckingĀ Kyushu is beyond ridiculous, okay. They barely even get snow in the actualĀ winter months. This is happening on April 11th - or even later - and they shouldĀ be having temperatures in the 15-20°C/60-68°F range - or maybe even higher. And they probably were, before this. Thatās why Yuuriās so surprised and confused.
So why would they even bother including this?
Victor. Itās all about Victor.
In part, I suspect itās a literary/poetry reference, even if I canāt quite place it, becauseĀ āhe came from the north, bringing ice and snowā is something of a universal literary image.
But mostly, itās because, in Japanese, when someone does something highly unexpected and uncharacteristic, like, say, me cleaning my room, you express your surprise by saying āwow, does this mean itās gonna snow tomorrow?ā
And it didnāt just snow. It snowed a lot. Itās a reference to how ridiculously unexpected it is for Victor to wanna coach instead of skating himself, for him to show up in Japan out of the blue.
If you still doubted that Victor and Yuuri are in a loving and healthy relationship
Here you have YuuriĀ āI skate for Victor and he is my number 1 motivation and drive I want him for myselfā Katsuki notĀ even hesitating to order Victor to go back to Japan and saying he will be fine by himself, because he knows what Makkachin means to Victor, and he doesnāt want Victor to go through the same pain and regret Yuuri went through with Vicchan and being too far away to be there for a beloved pet one last time (btw I think Makkachin is going to be fine, donāt worry).
And here you have VictorĀ āheās too self-centered/selfish to care about anyone but himself (or so they say)ā Nikiforov adamantly refusing to leave Yuuri alone during such an important competition (and you can tell he is deeply conflicted, as he should be because itās Makkachin, but he still refuses to leave) until he spots Yakov. And then be pleads with Yakov, who has given him nothing but scorn since he left to coach Yuuri, who told him not to even speak to him again unless it was to ask to come back to skating, to please be there for Yuuri for one day, so he can leave with peace of mind. And itās the most vulnerable weāve seen Victor so far.
This is love and trust, on both sides.
Okay? But Yuriās character development is so good? A couple of Ā episodes ago, if Victor hadnāt been there, Yuri would have literally self destructed.
yuuagoĀ replied to your postĀ āthere are folks writing and reblogging criticisms that a major failing...ā
To be honest, one of the things that I love about this series is that it doesn't have that level of realism... (I get enough of that in real life) anyway +1 to how HMM it is when people are like "Let's normalize these relationships OH WAIT that's a little too much"
RIGHT? Ā the lack of homophobia in the series is actually a plus for me LOL..Ā what do these folks think im investing all my time in fictional unvierses for .... definitely not a reflection of what i see in every day life lemme tell you!!Ā
subteraneansĀ replied to your postĀ āthere are folks writing and reblogging criticisms that a major failing...ā
In an anime where everyone jumps quads that are like super hard to land lack of homophobia in universe isn't much of a stretch lol
honestly the programs the skaters do are probably less realistic than the lack of homophobia... people can change their thinking wrt queer relationships a lot faster than evolutioncan produce so many athletes capable of withstanding so much lactic acid build up Ā and Ā in their legs :p
ojamajoprincessĀ replied to your postĀ āthere are folks writing and reblogging criticisms that a major failing...ā
i love the lack of homophobia. it makes it like a safe place. let us have something pure and happy, let people escape from the everyday. u dont need to watch an anime to find persecution of people who arent cishet :/
LITERALLY like the most overwhelming feeling i have during every episode of yoi isĀ āthis anime makes me feel safeā and i really, really do not like seeing people trying to erase the comfort others might find in a non-perfect series/person/etc via ~discourse~
