Cogs in the machine

I had my most depressing though about the Legend of Zelda for a while:

Each game is effectively a post-apocalypse time period where time of great technology has past from the world and society is rebuilding itself. Cool. But part of that cycle is that Evil (i.e. Ganondorf, Vaati and the what-have-you) keeps returning every hundred years. And every time evil returns, a new Zelda and Link make a new appearance to confront that evil.

Breath of the Wild started in a paused cycle, with a trapped Ganondorf, so the world of Hyrule knew peace for 10,000 years before the game began. But the kicker is that for all those years, there never was a Link or Zelda. They only show up to confront the evil.

In most games peace exists before and after, so there's the knowledge the characters will return to peace for a time. But not for Zelda or Link, they never get to live through the peace times they fight for, only briefly experiencing it before passing on the torch. And through the Hero's Shade, we see that even the time afterward isn't able to let them rest.

Zelda and Link never get reincarnations in the time they always fight for, they never can just have a quiet life, they must always be there when they're needed.
