Hey, do you take fic requests? If so I can I get something with trans Custer? It's okay if you don't wanna write it.
This has been sitting in my asks for a while and I am so so sorry anon! I'm only just now being struck with the ability to write so I hope you forgive me. Hope you like it!! 💜
The people who used to know Custer knew him as several things. Awkward, impulsive, foolish, you name it and he was called it. But even the people who didn't respect him at least still respected his gender identity. He was a man and everyone acknowledged that, even if they didn't personally like him.
When he came to life in the museum for the first time he immediately lunged at the opportunity to hide his true self.
Present as cis at all costs, he constantly told himself.
He would he lying if he said that the presence of the other exhibits made him anxious. He wanted to come out, he really did. But maybe staying incognito was better for him. He wasn't sure how the others would react.
Eventually keeping it bottled inside became too much and he had to tell someone. Anyone. He couldn't keep hiding that he was trans. He was just nervous and unsure of who to tell. Who would be willing to listen and someone he could trust to understand him? When Custer was sitting there thinking this over, it hit him.
Larry would understand. He was probably the most understanding one out of all of them in Custer's opinion and therefore Custer decided Larry is who he would come out to first. Depending on Larry's reaction would let him know if he should come out to the others.
"Larry, can I have a word with you?" Custer asked in his signature accent. Larry turned around after helping Octavius back up into the Roman exhibit.
"Yeah of course!" He put his hands on his hips, smiling. "What's on your mind?"
Larry could read the situation immediately and motioned Custer to follow him. He could tell this was something that Custer only wanted him to know. Therefore he'd take him somewhere he felt safe to discuss what was troubling him. Once they got somewhere secluded and away from the other exhibits, Larry spoke up again.
"Alright now what's got you so upset? And before you tell me you're not, I have a kid so I know these things and I can tell when people are lying about how they feel. Now what's wrong?"
Custer was taken aback but definitely wasn't surprised by Larry's comment. Larry had unofficially became the dad of the museum and the father figure of many of the exhibits. Custer could tell Larry's parental side was taking over again. Custer took a deep breath and sighed.
"I'm... I'm what you guys'd call transgender."
Silence fell between them for a brief moment.
"So... Are you saying you'd rather present as a woman or...?" Larry asked, his expression genuine. Custer shook his head.
"No, I'm sayin I'm a man but I just... Wasn't that way originally."
"Oh." Larry smiled. "That's not a problem at all." Larry leaned a little closer, laughing softly. "There's a more of us trans people here than you'd think."
"Are you-?" Custer questioned, surprised.
"Mhm." Larry hummed as a yes. "The majority of us here are LGBT. I promise the others will accept you for you. The real you."
And in that moment, the museum felt a little bit more welcoming than it had previously. He was safe here.
