in honor of Philip "The Stanford Prison Experiment" Zimbardo finally eating shit and dying, i highly recommend reading The Lifespan Of A Lie (free online article) and Debunking The Stanford Prison Experiment (journal article available for free through the author's website)

the Stanford Prison Experiment was fraudulent at best, and so was Zimbardo's entire career, which he spent defending imperialists who committed war crimes by pretending his work had any scientific value

nope. Zimbardo's TED talk about SPE was basically the exact same talk he always gave, where he at least insists that there are legitimate takeaways from his "study" that can be applied to broader contexts

as a spoiler for the articles, the entire study was very demonstrably fraudulent, and Zimbardo outright told the "guards" exactly how he wanted them to behave on multiple occasions

he was a liar to the end.

#@prev:#at Stanford University#Zimbardo had a some rooms set up to be a “prison”#then from a pool of student volunteers - Zimbardo randomly picked half to be “guards” and half “prisoners”#the guards were treating the prisoners horribly. idk how to describe it. the prisoners didn't want to continue the experiment#it was supposed to last 2 weeks but got cut short after 6 days#sidenote: the assistant professor who called for the experiment to stop - she later married him

so (not to nitpick!) but interestingly only three guards treated the prisoners badly despite Zimbardo and his "warden" (a grad student) actively instructing and encouraging the guards to mistreat the prisoners

ETA: i also believe the person who he married was either a current or former grad student of his in addition to being his girlfriend at the time
