While I don't agree with Negative Legend on that now is a bad time for Chaotic to relaunch (Since it's only Magic, Pokemon, and Yu-Gi-Oh left).

But I do agree with him when he said that they (meaning the people behind Chaotic) need to come out the gate swinging.

They need to nail everything: both a digital and physical platform.

Not only are there tons of new, easy to learn card games (like Lorcana) that have huge accessibility, clear goals, and tons of varied play styles and themes, but Chaotic was the first with an online platform. They have to match that same level of accessibility, but again, I cannot stress this enough:

IT NEEDS TO BE FUN.

The cartoon did a ton of heavy lifting in that regard, but the game itself wasn’t all that fun unless it was in the online platform.

There are so many fun games that the audience could play instead. Slay the Spire has a physical board game on top of being an incredible roguelike; INSCRYPTION is one of my favorite digital card games of all time because of the mechanics and atmosphere -and the physical cards they made are gorgeous; I still use my old Pokémon TCG decks and fail to play Magic with any sense of being good, but all of that feels good.

It’s possible, and I am hopeful, but I really hope they nail the presentation and design.

I saw your headcanons about Chaotic being hosted in Perim rather than it's own space.

I actually see the Codemasters making a secondary hub over there for multiple reasons. One is to obviously improve relationships between humans and Creatures. Especially if there has been a rise in incidents caused by players like the rare location bombers for an example.

A hub in Perim would show that the Codemasters actually do something about such individuals rather than the obligatory "I'll take your word for it." Second reason is it would be a safer point to port between both worlds. Like the hub can give weather updates for certain locations so a player has a heads up on what to expect.

A Perim hub would also be a good place for Chaotic employees like your Custodians to port in. See how things are holding up before porting to their chosen location for work. Creatures can also come over to give feedback, complaints or reports if needed.

I think one of the biggest benefits for a Perim hub is someone can help meditate when the alliance happens due to the M'arrillians. A neutral party could keep things on point without tribe association in the way.

I always wanted Chaotic to be more grounded in Perim; it would make it more real for Players and Perimians as a whole.

Selfishly I want there to be a place where Creatures can spectate matches, see how good their favorite Players are and some might even learn a few moves.

Chaotic questions aside, how have you been?

I promise I’ll get to the Chaotic questions, but this one’s quicker to answer!

Long story short: I’m okay, just been really busy with work and life. It’s strange to think I’m going to be 30 this year, I still feel like I’m flying blind in the world. It’s scary, but hey, I’m still here. According to some of my older co-workers, that never really goes away lol.

Things have been tough, sure, but I have some amazing friends that are helping me through it all and a great partner 💕

Other than that, I’m trying to do more art again. I have a general art blog over at @sibilscribbles where I’m currently building a Transformers AU and trying my hand at comics. I want to do a better job at keeping the art over here more focused on Chaotic and the shenanigans of any AUs. :P

In your opinion, what are some games (various genres) you can see being crossed over into Chaotic?

For example; like how Magic the Gathering has cross over with other IPs like Final Fantasy.

I would love an MTG crossover tbh. I think that would be a really cool way to structure things in terms of which Tribe would be which of the colors, which ones would use which effects- and the art that would come out of that would be insane. It would also kind of lend itself to structure the game more, although I’m not sure if regular or commander would be better.

I really want to play that now even though I’m terrible at Magic. The last time I played I lost to a child being taught how to play by their dad at the Duskmourne launch; it was fantastic, they were having a great time kicking my ass.

in the chaotic videogame tom was testing out a unique scanner that let him bring any scans he took to life yugioh style for codemasters crellen, which ends up getting destroyed in the end. what do you think their intentions were for it?

For Shadow Warriors? I think it was just a gimmick for the game. I don’t think such a thing would be used in the show because that could lead to some very bad outcomes.

Like, Players with access to those just casually having Creatures they control cause chaos and the real counterparts getting blamed. I can see how that would be interesting, but it could just as easily become a “cool, we don’t trust any humans now, get out” and turn the entire environment hostile.

Sure you can find the people responsible, but I think that Tribal Leaders would hold the Masters themselves to account because why would you make that?! And give them to kids?!

I remember reading a post of yours awhile back that you headcanon that Chaotic and the Spiritlands are connected in some way since Scanners are basically advanced non-combative versions of Talazars, do you think you can elaborate more on that please? 🙏

Sure thing!

So, Talazars are essentially spiritual anchors that, when bound to their user, allow them to stay in Perim as corporeal and living, right? They're not phasing through objects or on a time-crunch for how long they can remain. They give Spiritlanders the same way of interacting with the world as everyone else.

That's basically the same things Scanners do, except they also include the ability to collect and store data.

Talazars amplify or bestow powers, Scanners instead allow for instant travel or escape.

We also know that Players can be directly affected by the world around them, the abilities of Creatures, Mugic, so I just kind of came up with the theory that Scanners are Human Talazars. They're close enough to Spiritlanders in that they're not actually there in reality, but to anchor someone's mind.

It's also the theory behind the Adoption AU (Kindred) because essentially, the anchor or the Scanner is replaced with an actual Talazar made for the adoptee that helps integrate them into Perim. It's part of why they can walk through the Border Between Worlds. Sure, they're gone from Earth at that point, but that's not the focus of the story.

Fun fact: Tom's bracers he gets given were once Maxxor's, hence why they're scuffed by the time he gets them. Part of why they're a powerful anchor, and why everything hits him like a truck. Not many choose to create a Talazar for someone else using something they had once used (considered taboo), but it makes for some interesting side effects.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the biggest problem with Chaotic is that the idea is good, four factions at war with each other for an ancient powerful relic, it sounds good on paper and makes for a good game and show. But the problem was the execution was poor.

The cards were hard to find, tournaments were hard to find and far and few between, and the card game was hard to get into both because you needed someone to explain how the game works and the current set of cards would be rendered obsolete the moment the next set was released. Especially if you weren't on the online game.

The show added a nice element of Humans getting involve by scanning the creatures of these factions for their card game and acting like fae and gave some personalities to some of the creatures from the card game, but failed to properly introduce all the factions evenly and made it seem like the Overworld/card game commercial power hour with these other two or three factions just hanging around.

Personally, I think they (Bryan and co.) know that the show is/was more popular than the card game even with all it's flaws, but since they're starting from scratch they are probably going to correct and smooth out the flaws going forward. At least, that's what I hope is going on.

Honestly, I agree with that first paragraph so much. As much as I love the OW and UW, give us more stuff about Perim as a whole and the other Tribes. Make it a world that feels lived in, please.

I also want better for the community: to have more consistent access to the game/cards/events and actually get to enjoy everything that makes these types of games fun. You know, being together and having fun. I just really hope scalpers don't get into Chaotic, that would be my worst nightmare.

In the words of my coworker, "(scalpers) ruined my fucking hobby" with Pokemon and MTG already and I'm so tired of it all.

As someone who works in retail, it's the biggest pain in my ass we see everyday. I want kids to play the game, I want older fans to enjoy the game, I want the show to kick ass, and just let people have fun.

In your answer you mentioned parts of it are catered to the tribes, does that mean regular civilians would be allowed in as well?

Cause i imagine in that situation Chaotic would be quite a dilemma when the m'arillians show up since in that setting the codemasters would just strait up tell players to leave behind Chaotic.

I’d hope it’d allow civilians! Perimian and human kids just having fun, adults sharing stories, teaching games or music, it all evolves into a big area founded on trust. Sure, CodeMasters are enigmatic and strange, but imagine creatures reacting to watching matches between Players.

Like damn, maybe these kids know a thing or two. And you can’t convince me that Chaor wouldn’t watch Kaz absolutely rip through and opponent without shedding proud tears. Same with Maxxor and Tom.

As for the M’Arillians, I think that would be a struggle to get started as their mind control was shown to work on Players. There would be a ton of work done to ensure that doesn’t happen again, and extending that protection to everyone while within Chaotic’s small territory. Yet once they’re there, it’s more of the same.

I’d imagine the food would change the most, and they’d all get to try things not native to their respective environments.

As someone who has many aus under their belt, there's something I wanted your opinion on.

If Chaotic as a whole was placed in a more open and accessible place in Perim, how do you think it would conduct itself in its place in tribe society?

And on the tribes pov how do you think they would regard them? Would they still think they're a nuisance, or another player in their war?

Especially now that they have a place to put blame on when there are players who think they can just port away from consequences, like the players who started blowing up locations.

Honestly I think they’d treat it as neutral ground once it’s realized that a majority of these humans are children. They’d also definitely have the threat of “hey you’re a part of our world, now, don’t fuck with it, because we can do the same right back” to Chaotic Players and really emphasize that there is no escape from consequences.

Imagine pieces of Chaotic that cater to different Tribes, all blending together and presenting a good space for inter-Tribal connection or diplomacy.

Humans don’t have the same direct impact in claims to land or Perim, but those that have caused significant damage are definitely going to be held to account.

This is why I made the concept of the Custodians in multiple of my AUs, they’re there to help steward and protect, and make up for the failings of other humans.

DND PKMN

Took a few of my favorites from different teams over the years, and decided to make them a DND party. Tried to draw and match them to classes based on their abilities and natures.

Misc. notes:

-I like the idea of Meowscarada and Noivern being traveling buddies; Noivern has frisk, thus leading her to try and snatch shiny items regardless of who they’re attached to. Meowscarada ends up having to clean up the messes that ensue

-Gardevoir is a prince with a mega stone in his crown! He’s the second mega stone user in the group besides Lucario

-Luxray has intimidate, and I figured I’d make her look a bit more like a Raikou to really sell the “big imposing barbarian” trope

If you were in charge of Chaotic's revival, how would you go about marketing it and drumming up interest in it since it would be roughly 20 years since Chaotic first launch in 2006 in a year and a couple of months from now?

Honestly?

Make it fun. Have small tournaments and sealed draft releases, kind of like how MTG runs events. Partner with shops and their social media, but make the game fun.

The biggest problem is that you’re starting from scratch -you can play on nostalgia, sure, but that’s not necessarily going to recruit new fans. The draw of the show was the world and characters, it was kids imagining themselves in it. The actual product was not as fun, and I know that there were no events or communities near me. Whereas when I went to my first Magic event, the people were exceptionally kind and supportive of new players. I got my butt kicked by people who have played for decades and were teaching their kids, it was amazing. That’s an institutional amount of building that only is possible after incredible lengths of time.

Yes, Chaotic was largely played online, but not everyone is able to have broadband or WiFi. You need to make it accessible, build community, and that eventually steamrolls into a dedicated base.

Yugioh is crazy in the anime and the TCG is incredibly customizable and fun. MTG and its crossovers, simultaneously silly and serious stories, is a delight but can have a high bar for entry. Then you have Pokémon, which is fun, accessible, and has plenty for people of all ages to enjoy.

There’s an uphill battle, sure, but I’m hopeful.

Really trying to nail consistent clothing/character designs. Still a lot to do, but this has been cracking me up and I love how this is turning out.

The completed brain rot! Still not too content with how the Zekyn (the red tiefling) finished out. He’s also a really hard character to draw in general. It’s a lot more cartoony than I’ve been trying to render lately, so I’m kind of still going back and forth on everything.

Red tends to lean into different purples, blue reflections, grays, and oranges, but his player likes him to have a much more unified, bright red. This lends itself to making the character look flat.

I try to keep these things in mind when drawing Chaor or other UnderWorlders. Having mottling, color variance, and understanding where the cool tones and neutral tones land help sell the form of the character.

Hello! This is very random. You were the first person I followed on Tumblr. And the first person I've found who loves Chaotic too. And even when your posts have nothing to do with the show, I get so happy when I see you've posted. I hope that's not stressful for you and please don't feel like you have to respond.
