Just read that post that folks asked for my reaction on (re 16-year old at Michfest being yelled at for two hours). So much not true from tumblr user princessgender. I have really tried to stay out of this shit, but I just need to address this (once again) because, as per usual, this blog post is full of lies and misinterpretations and half-truths.
it’s estimated that terfs have caused the deaths of 50,000 trans people
hoo-kay. This is related to the later Janice Raymond thing, so I’m combining them. So one of the first things that one learns when doing research or asserting something sociologically, or historically is that one must use sources to back up one’s assertions. More specifically, one must use credible sources, why? Because “[i]t’s much easier to publish information on the Internet than to publish a book or periodical in print. Since it’s easier, Web posters are not always as careful to make sure that the information is accurate.”
So where does this 50,000 figure cited up there come from? The TransAdvocate. With no citation whatsoever. No facts, based on nothing. It is literally the unsupported assertion of Cristan Williams, who is obsessed with Michfest (seriously, Williams must be so hella bored right now). Williams asserts that an article Janice Raymond wrote in 1980 is responsible for all of these deaths (conservatively!) because Raymond single handedly made the government “effectively eliminate…federal and some states aid for indigent and imprisoned transsexuals. It had a further impact on private health insurance which followed the federal government’s lead in disallowing services to transsexual patients for any treatment remotely related to being transsexual, including breast cancer or genital cancer, as that was deemed to be a consequence of treatment for transsexuality.”
Here is the government in 2013 (after receiving a complaint from a trans woman that Medicare didn’t cover SRS as well as six trans advocacy organizations, the ACLU and amici curie) saying there is not enough information to make a national coverage determination having Medicare cover SRS.
The government then goes on to explicitly explain why SRS was denied in 1981 (the blame for which Williams lays on Raymond, again with no support of any kind):
The basis for the NCD in 1981, when the NCHCT issued its report containing what became the NCD language, was that transsexual surgery was not safe or effective, due to the high rate of complications and the lack of evidence that it was safe or effective in treating transsexualism. See NCD (transsexual surgery “considered experimental” due to “the lack of well controlled, long term studies of the safety and effectiveness of the surgical procedures and attendant therapies for transsexualism”); NCD Record at 18 (1981 NCHCT report stating that “[t]he procedures cannot be considered safe because of the high complication rates” and noting “the lack of long-term, properly designed studies of the outcome of these procedures demonstrating their efficacy”); Id. at 12 (NCTHC May 6, 1981 memorandum stating that “[t]he more controversy exists over the safety and effectiveness of a technology, the better the supporting evidence must be to justify coverage, particularly when there is a body of evidence that questions the effectiveness of the technology.”). The NCD record also raises doubts about the reliability and validity of diagnoses of transsexualism, with the NCHCT finding that “[t]he diagnosis of transsexualism is also problematic” and that “[t]he criteria for establishing the diagnosis vary from [university medical] center to center and have changed over time.” Id. at 14.
Raymond is neither a surgeon or a sociologist. Her political argument that gender is a fabrication has no sway with the government. Not even so much as mentioned. And here is what the insurance companies used to say about this surgery based on the infamous 1981 report. None of the assertions that Raymond makes in the piece are asserted for denying the surgery.
Interestingly, the trans woman who brought this complaint actually points out Raymond as one of two sources “ideologically biased against transpersons…” The government replies: “We need not and do not address these arguments since we need not decide here whether the NCD record was complete and adequate to support the NCD at the time the NCD record was developed… during the more than 30 years that have passed since the NCHCT issued its report containing the findings that HCFA adopted in issuing the NCD is, without more, a sufficient basis for our determination that the NCD record is not complete and adequate to support the validity of NCD”
Again, when addressed head-on, the government makes no mention of Raymond and, in fact, dismisses that attempt to blame her for their decision out of hand.
(by the way, the other “ideologically biased source” from 1981? Was Paul McHugh. But you probably have never heard of him. Why? Because the same people who make Janice Raymond a genocidal maniac on par with some of the worst murderers in human history–50,000 people is a lot–have bupkus to say about McHugh. Who, by the way, ACTUALLY, PHYSICALLY, shut down the only clinic that was providing trans folks with treatment pre-1980s. Who on the regular posts articles in the major newspapers, boasting about the shut down. WHO STILL WORKS AT JOHN HOPKINS, but guess who does NOT face the boycotts or the hate or the violence or receive a pithy acronym like “TERF” for his work. Why do you think that is? Maybe because he is a straight, white, male?)
This issue was only resolved LAST YEAR. Raymond had nothing to do with the delay. Laying the issue of medicare not covering SRS, much less the murders of 50,000 phantom trans souls (conservatively!) at the feet of Raymond is a full-on fabrication.
in 1973 terfs tried to violently attack trans women at the West Coast Lesbian Feminist Conference and when other feminists defended the trans women, terfs threatened the lives of everyone there
Once again, the source is the TransAdvocate. Also “tried to violently attack” (language is everything) as in “no violent attack actually happened? I see what you did there. But generally folks, if someone is being super hyperbolic about something? They are probably lying. So, TERFs “threatened the lives of everyone there”? Really, everyone there? See pp. 190-191.
Second, no, didn’t go down like that. Here are some facts, as related by an internationally respected news magazine with paid fact checkers on staff:
In one early skirmish, in 1973, the West Coast Lesbian Conference, in Los Angeles, furiously split over a scheduled performance by the folksinger Beth Elliott, who is what was then called a transsexual. Robin Morgan, the keynote speaker, said:
I will not call a male “she”; thirty-two years of suffering in this androcentric society, and of surviving, have earned me the title “woman”; one walk down the street by a male transvestite, five minutes of his being hassled (which he may enjoy [AHEM]), and then he dares, he dares to think he understands our pain? No, in our mothers’ names and in our own, we must not call him sister.
I guess this theory works if words are violence. Which is what we are taught by a certain faction of the community. That is so handy!
terf Jean O’ Leary instructed mc Vito Russo to attack Sylvia Rivera with the microphone instead of giving it to her for her scheduled speaking time before this famous video in 1973 at the Christopher Street Liberation Day Rally. She is also connected to Sylvia Rivera attempting suicide. (source 1) (source 2) (source 3)
So if one actually watches that video? They’ll see that Rivera calls O’Leary one of her dear friends. She also does in that written source. If you watch the actual video of Rivera giving her speech at the Liberation Day Rally, you’ll see how she is actually calling out white, heterosexual, male patriarchy as her oppressor. See the 1:56 mark. She calls them out EXPLICITLY as the perps of the violence she has experienced. But why actually listen to what Rivera is saying when it doesn’t support the TERFs are the reason why I don’t like myself theory of the world.
In 1999 a 16 year old trans girl was sold a ticket to Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival and was berated and attacked by terfs. The young trans girl was forced to stand in front of a crowd of terfs as they all chanted “rapist” at her for hours. Towards the end of the show, a terf threatened to kill the teenager and no one cared. (source)
This is just utter bullshit. By the way, the protesters were asked to leave, no one was forced to (hence they walked out on their own accord…and some of the upset was also due to the fact that they had used wristbands interchangeably so that folks who didn’t pay could get in). This is just one of the accounts that directly contradicts this and, as per usual, shows the real direction of the aggression and violence.
And, let’s not even forget about everything Cathy Brennan continues to do to this day.
Notice how there aren’t actually accounts of anything Cathy Brennan has actually done?
Terfs are violent, genocidal terrorists who are ok with murdering children or pushing children to suicide.
So if TERFs are responsible for “violent, genocidal terrorism,” clearly princessgender could name an actual example of a TERF murdering (the core of genocide, after all) or being physically violent (hell, I’ll take a simple assault) of a trans person.
Cause, yanno, I can do that pretty easy when it comes to finding murderous, child killing and raping trans women.
This Trans Woman. (I guess black lives matter unless a trans woman murders someone?)
That whole blog post? That is what we call a reversal, chirruns. Remember, if someone has to lean on hyperbole? It is because they have no facts.
