Bertholdt is genderfluid. They like to wear skirts a lot because it makes them feel pretty.

Levi’s gender is “fuck you”. He scrawls it in big capital letters on forms, in the box where they ask you if you’re male or female.

Hanji is nonbinary, and changes their pronouns at least once a week to keep everyone on their toes.

Annie is agender, and ze will beat the crap out of you if you ever misgender zir.

Ymir is a ass-kicking transwoman, and her girlfriend Christa supports her 110%.

Armin figured out zhe were non-binary thanks to Hanji.

I like the part in the volume 8 Attack on Titan English translated manga where Hanji’s called “sir.” People talk about it like a translation error or argue that “sir” can be used to address female higher-ups as well and yeah I get that but

but I like it because it contributes to an nb Hanji headcanon wherein they openly don’t give a ding dang about gender-specific addresses or pronouns or anything.

and what’s funny is that not giving a damn about gender can be difficult for people around you and can in and of itself be subversive. because even if you don’t care there are people who have been taught to care A Lot, and want definite yes or no, black and white, Boy Or Girl for these htings. and so at first there are some people who have trouble, because they have these Ideas about Respect and Rank and Gender and how those things all intersect

but the majority is like “yo seriously, get with the program, and get with it fast because there are other things to worry about than the scope of your worldview, just roll with it, it’s fine, I promise” 

hanji and the people around them just kinda switch off and it’s all good, it’s all great. hanji. wow

okay okay okay gosh i’m excite i like all these characters, the show got ms through a really nasty time in my life when my anxiety was out of control

anyway!

OK, obviously all 5 of the boys are some flavor of queer. This is a given.

I headcanon Haru, Rei, and Nagisa as autistic. like, haru seems pretty obvious and he is a lot like me actually—very blank-faced, but he’s not emotionless, you just have to get to know him. even his (and my) friends have trouble understanding what he (and i) are thinking tho. he fixates on water (I LOVE WATER i love to watch it i love it yes) and on foods like mackerel, and is very picky about his jammers, like he’s very sensitive to textures and stuff.

autistic rei seems pretty obvious too.

nagisa is…nagisa, lol, but he’s actually deeply empathic and he can read haru’s emotions better than anyone, even makoto. he’s the “socially active but odd” kind of autistic.

also, kou and ama-chan-sensei are binary trans girls for sure, yes yes
