Happy Hobbit Day! :D
This one was a beast, but man it was fun.
Once again, the poetry is from my super cool friend, Meg. Who also wrote the poem for this set of drawings. Though, if you asked her, she'd just tell you that she only rhymed what Tolkien wrote in the House of Healing chapter. Regardless, scream some love in the comments for her!
Update! The poem has now been posted on AO3!
Or- check out her other poems and writings here! She's got a bunch!
With that being said, thank you, Meg, for giving me the proper outlet to draw this scene. I would not have been able to get nearly this far or include this much emotion without you <3
A few years back I accepted a management position for reasons that made sense at the time. It taught me a lot but damned if I cannot trace every missing element of creativity in my life to that decision. Which is a shame because I think I've gotten halfway good at it by now and I'd like not to have to make decisions about just how much brain fatigue I'm prepared to accept for the foreseeable future as I scan the job market again.
Anyway, I miss writing and miss taking part in the culture here and somedays I just want my whole brain back.
Ah, almost forgot to post this here! But yes: I finally made a proper poster out of the language tree infographic I did a while back.
And it’s available for sale riiight over here if you (or someone you know) want one.
I edited the original version a bit (which is a worldbuilding infographic in my webcomic “Stand Still. Stay Silent”), Mostly I just removed the parts that referenced things in the story so that people who don’t read the comic can look at this without being confused. Now it’s a general, good old-fashioned language chart, no Nordic post-apocalyptic worldbuilding involved. Enjoy everyone!
(Here’s also a larger version since Tumblr seems to shrink the “full-size” one to like 1200px.)
Beautiful art and I do love a good tree metaphor for language.
As a bonus, https://hivemill.com/products/stand-still-stay-silent-the-nordic-languages-print includes some cute cats along with its examples.
I have a hard time choosing favorites but if backed into a corner and asked to name my favorite indie band, Moontower might win.
Anyway, they just dropped the lead single for the new album coming out soon and if you like what I can only describe as West Coast Vaporwave, you might like it!
Is a good recommendation! I particularly enjoyed "Give Me a Ride (80s Mercedes)" off the album.
‘This is worse than Mordor!’ said Sam. ‘Much worse in a way. It comes home to you, as they say; because it is home, and you remember it before it was all ruined.’ ‘Yes, this is Mordor,’ said Frodo. ‘Just one of its works. Saruman was doing its work all the time, even when he thought he was working for himself.
- Return of the King
A strong place and wonderful was Isengard, and long it had been beautiful; and there great lords had dwelt, the wardens of Gondor upon the West, and wise men that watched the stars. But Saruman had slowly shaped it to his shifting purposes, and made it better, as he thought, being deceived–for all those arts and subtle devises for which he forsook his former wisdom, and which fondly he imagined were his own, came but from Mordor; so that what he made was naught, only a little copy, a child’s model or a slave’s flattery, of that vast fortress, armoury, prison, furnace of great power, Barad-dûr, the Dark Tower, which suffered no rival, and laughed at flattery, biding its time, secure in its pride and its immeasurable strength.
- The Two Towers
@chechula produced this rendition of the changes in Hobbiton wrought by Saruman and the way the war was brought home to the hobbits with a striking echo of the dark tower, Barad-dûr. Thematically appropriate given the text.
As an artist, they are making some of the best and most unique Tolkien fanart that I've seen in a long time and deserve some extra followers.

An interruption to our usual programming: my friend and frequent writing partner has had a book published, called The Goetist, about summoning a demon and soliciting its advice on simple topics like magic and complicated topics like living a good life. If you like my style, it might be relevant to your interests.

Edited to add: I am told that there is an option of signing up for a free advance copy in exchange for committing to provide a review at the link below.
https://booksprout.co/reviewer/review-copy/view/240715/the-goetist
The Goetist is a straightforward, tight experience that manages to sound earnest without being trite. I believe that the author communicated exactly what they intended and that I received exactly the message that was sent. And there's something very fulfilling about that.
Having read it, I've decided that it's earned a place on my permanent shelf alongside the poetry, the plays, and the lyrical works.

You first left your hometown because the sadness followed you wherever you went
so you figured you might as well roam around with it.
when I was, a Jedi, Darth Vader, fought me in Bespin City,
And he removed my hand
he said son, will you join me,
would you kill, the emperor as forseen so, that we can share command?
I cried, Father? That's not what, my mentor, old Obi-Wan, had told me. I'll not join your charade.
Imitation is a terrible way to learn and the laziest way to teach. It should be a last resort.
"There's no thought crimes and no thought heroisms" is honestly such a good piece of life advice.
You could be having the most fucked up problematic thoughts 24/7 but if you treat people with kindness, the good you do is the only thing that matters. But if you have only the purest thoughts and all the correct beliefs, it doesn't matter one bit if you spend most of your time being an asshole to people.
your intentions will not save you
Hey! I have reopened my Inprnt so if you're from the US you can get prints of my art from there~
Now I’m thinking about a modern Mat AU and I hate it. Like I hate to say it but he would be a stock bro. Not on purpose, he used his student aid funds to buy AMC and GameStop as a joke and made a ton of money but now everything he buys seems to do well and he’s attracted a circle of finance majors that convinced him to switch to their faculty. He never shows up to class except for tests which he nails by guessing C. He constantly smells like grape vape. He pays Estean to write his assignments for him. He accidentally starts a frat but makes Talmanes be the president. They’re pretty sure he owns the frat house but he sleeps on their couch for some reason. Elayne from the Student Aid office keeps trying to reach him to pay back what he owes but he keeps trying to argue since he doesn’t even go to class he shouldn’t have to pay (everybody tries to tell him that’s not how it works but he doesn’t listen). Nalesean takes him to a gay bar but Mat doesn’t even notice, to which Nalesean is mildly confused because then what is with the hat and scarf…? His only female friend is a random transfer graduate student in history named Birgitte. He has a bad acid trip and wakes up able to speak Latin.

I just want to remind everyone how affordable buying food from indigenous tribes is. I live in a major city and I was able to purchase and ship (15) pounds of fish from back home to myself for cheaper than I could buy it from a grocery store here in the city. Yeah, shipping has its own environmental factors but I was able to support an indigenous owned business while also getting my groceries at a lesser cost. (Buying in bulk is always a good idea if you’re planning on having something shipped to you)
Some tribal owned grocers that ship:
Bow and Arrow (Ute Mountain)
Native Harvest (White Earth)
Red Lake Fishery (Red Lake)
Wozupi (Mdewakanton Dakota)
Ramona Farms (Gila River)
Tanka Bars (Oglala)
Indian Pueblo Store (Pueblos)
Twisted Cedar Wine (Cedar Paiutes)
Ute Bison (Ute)
Seka Hills Olive Oil and Vinegars (Yocha Dehe Wintun)
She Nah Nam Seafood (Nisqually)
Sakari Botanicals (Inupiaq)
Honor the Earth (? Anishinaabe)
Nett Lake Wild Rice (Boise Forte Anishinaabe)
Passamaquoddy maple (Passamaquoddy)
BONUS: coffee :)
Yeego Coffee (Navajo)
Spirit Mountain Roasting (Yuma Quechan)
Birchbark Coffee (Anishinaabe)
Thunder Island Coffee (Shinnecock)
Small correction:
Honor the Earth is an organization founded by Winona Duke of the White Earth Nation (Anishinaabe/Ojibwe) with Amy Ray and Emily Saliers (LGBTQ musical duo Indigo Girls and long-time political activists.) You can buy Honor The Earth merch online to support the environmental work they do, specifically to help protest Enbridge Oil’s Line 3 Pipeline routed through tribal lands that endangers wild rice beds which are both a staple crop and sacred to Anishinaabeg.
However, Winona also heads up a hemp farm called Winona’s Hemp & Heritage Farm located on and run primarily by members of the White Earth Nation. It seeks to general local wealth for the tribe by encouraging the production of hemp as a fast-growing renewable and regenerative crop resource to be used for everything from non-plastic textiles/clothing, housing construction and insulation, food products, and CBD products! (They also grow other crops there such as heirloom varieties of corn, beans, squash, Jerusalem artichokes, potatoes, and ceremonial tobacco in an effort to help re-establish and increase tribal food sovereignty!)
They have both a brick-and-mortar shop called The Hemp Market Store and Coffee Shop in Osage MN where they sell their products and others by Indigenous-owned & -run companies! (They also sell those seasonal tribal heirloom crops there including Lakota squash and Ojibwe purple potatoes.)
But you can also buy many of their products online including hemp-fiber clothing, hemp tea, and hemp pasta. They also partnered with an experienced tribal herbalist to formulate CBD medicinal products like balms and oils (haven’t used it myself, but I the CBD balm for my mom for Christmas a few years back and she said it helped her chronic hip pain a lot.)
