(What is this?)
This is a gimmick blog! I take random posts (mostly but not exclusively from other translator blogs) and translate them in classical(ish) Latin. My main is @roseboy-in-training!

(Who am I?)
I am NOT an expert in Latin, nor Latin literature (far from it, in fact), I’m just a silly person who really liked Latin in school. My pronouns are he/him (is/eum in Latin) and I’m barely an adult (19 ~ XIX).

(What is my translation procedure?)
I prefer to avoid non-classical expressions, such as New Latin, vulgar or medieval expressions, but sometimes they’re necessary. Same goes for neologisms and pseudo-grecisms (ψευδοελληνικισμοί). As for textposts that directly refer to the op, I check their pronouns first to choose which gender pronouns and adjectives to use, but if I can't find them I'll pretend that I'm the op and default to masculine (i.e. the gender I use for myself, which I will also apply when the op refers to a hypothetical “you”)

I want my posts to be recognisable written Latin, so I mostly follow modern spelling conventions. That means using both capital and minuscule letters, using U and V as different letters, and not explicitly marking vowel length in any way (see here for more) outside of the tags. I will however admit that I despise the use of J in Latin for completely arbitrary reasons, so that's that on that.

Since it's Pride Month, I decided to try my hand at making a short little poem for the occasion :3 Don't expect anything too fancy or too elaborate, I'm not skilled enough to pull that off, but I hope it's not too bad :Þ The metre is Sapphic stanza for pretty self-explanatory reasons (translation under the cut for those of you who want to attempt to translate it on your own):
Omnium semper generum est amor fas,
Sive amant nam se duo, sive plures,
Sive quis non se dare vult, tamen nos
Id celebremus!
Atque rumores pereuntium ne
Audieris, qui te haud validxm esse dicunt,
Nam tua est vita atque aliis iubere
Non licet ulla.
“Love of every kind is always right, for if two or more people love one another, or if someone wishes not to dedicate themself [to another], still we shall celebrate it!
And don't listen to the rumours of passers-by, who say that you're unwell, for it's your life, and others aren't allowed to command anything [of it].”
hi hi!! i love your blog it’s awesome! :D i have a quick question: in your last translation you used δυοῖν ἡμερῶν, but doesn’t greek have a dual number as well..?

good question! yes, ancient greek does have a dual number, and in fact δυοῖν is a dual form (genitive/dative, to be exact). since δύο refers specifically to two things, its inflected forms belong to the dual paradigm.
the thing is that by the classical period the dual wasn't being used quite as consistently as it had been earlier. because of that, δύο is often left undeclined, and nouns after it are often plural rather than dual.
so i'd honestly expect δύο ἡμερῶν more readily as an attic expression. that said, δυοῖν isn't unattested. aristotle, for example, writes δυοῖν ὄμμασι καὶ δυσὶν ἀκοαῖς ("with two eyes and two ears") in the politics (1287b27).

Why nihil for not eating instead of non? :0 cool blog btw, i took the Duolingo latin course for a bit before falling off but stuff like this is a really nice way of getting back into learning <3

“Nihil edo” simply means “I eat nothing”, which in that context felt more appropriate, but it’s just an arbitrary choice on my part!
