lately i've been switching back and forth between the side of the fandom that's all autistic adults who have years of experience with fandom culture and know how to deal with it all and who can have honest-to-god discussions that are civil and polite even when people have different opinions and it never descends into petty insults, and the side that's all 15 year olds who know nothing about fandom culture and unintentionally perpetuate all my least favorite parts of it (seriously you guys ao3 lets you filter tags for a reason, no that doesn't need to be a ship please stop it, why am i being told that my own interpretation of that one moment is objectively incorrect, what is 67 and why is everyone fucking saying it, etc. etc. etc.)

tldr i'm glad i found the side of this fandom that has its shit together for the most part, and if you think any part of this confession is talking about you, no it isn't

listen there are a lot of kids in this fandom and it's not y'all's fault for being kids who haven't learned these things, but I think there are a few important things for everybody to understand about how to be respectful as a fan ESPECIALLY in a musical theater context where the actors are a lot more accessible than with a show or film

Do not bring up your or anybody's fanfiction to the cast. This keeps happening. If they want to get on ao3 and browse themselves that's their journey but it is SO weird and crossing fan/creator boundaries to actually show your fanfic or ask about their thoughts on fanfiction

Do you want strangers you've never met talking to each other about if you and your science class lab partner kiss? No? Don't do it to other people.

This goes for Broadway/West End in general—don't utter a word less than positive about any specific actor's performance until you're in private. You never know whose mother or best friend or person with the power to pass whatever you say along is listening

Adding to the anon on fanfic and cast members. DON'T mention ships in general to the cast either! If a cast member brings it up themself then sure but otherwise it's a big no no. I have heard too many people bring them up point blank at sd and it's so weird.
