I will agree with some that the actual writing/wording here is a bit messy and obvious and could have been subtler if nothing else. But the *concept*

River having been beaten and kidnapped and overpowered by Frank and Patrice more than once. Almost killed multiple times, unable to do much to protect himself, much less those he cares about. His colleagues having been under attack by those same forces and *losing*. Marcus dead.

Is it any wonder that in the aftermath, in the search for control, some grounding meaning that might help get him through the mess of everything, River might latch onto the idea that if he'd been stronger, or faster, or better, things might have gone different? That if he's good enough they might hopefully go different next time. A different kind, a differently directed paranoia from Shirley's.

He outsmarted Frank, tracked him down while everyone else kept running, and maybe clinging to that brings comfort, reassurance that okay, maybe he stands a chance for the next time (but it's better to be sure. Better to make sure that he could). A small reassurance that he's worth something too. That his life isn't completely over. That the last version of him that his dying grandfather even remembers isn't a total loser.

And I do wonder, is it Frank specifically he's so obviously scared of? Does he know he was immediately released and is still out there? (and was he in show canon for that matter?) Or is it more of a feeling? For the next one?

And ultimately, the way this is all not going to stop his grandfather fading and fading more and more until he's gone completely.

There's also the fun irony that this is what Frank would have done to him if he'd had him since childhood. What he'd probably be pleased with now - he'd been so pleased when River listened to him and used his advice the first time, after all.
