If youre a closeted person somewhere out there thinking "I want to transition but it would be less progressive/unique/countercultural for me to be that gender instead of this one" please know that you are a real person not a character in a narrative and cant live your life based on what is good media representation. Liberal transphobes enjoy positioning trans identities as regressive compared to cis queerness or like non-transitioning transness or anything else they can leverage to make transphobia look progressive and I think its easy to absorb that message subconciously. But in real life we just are what we are and no ranking of validity can change the fact that you have an identity that is NOT chosen and is just your unchangeable truth. Not only should you not have to live a life dictated by what is most countercultural to identify as or whatever but also: being trans is extremely countercultural and feminist and leftist to begin with and theyre only trying to convince you otherwise bc theyre bigots

i get that americans love their cultural imperialism, but it really does piss me off that june is “international” pride month just because something happened in the united states.

in aotearoa, june isn’t our pride, it’s theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that “you owe your rights to Black trans women” is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) Māori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.

But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa don’t even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we don’t.

our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1986. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.

anyway, happy pride, americans. i’m truly sorry that most of you don’t see the negative impact your nation’s culture has on the rest of the world. and to the rest of the world reading this, try searching for your own country and culture’s queer history, don’t accept the american narratives as your own. we deserve our own histories divorced from the cultural hegemony of the USA.

To be fair "international" doesn't mean shit if you're really committed. Argentina has done pride month in November since '92 to commemorate the founding of the first LGBT organization recorded in our country back in nov. '67. It really does suck that some countries have abided mindlessly by that specific date but it's not like. A general thing and it's never too late to change it.

the racism against indians is just overwhelming and insane. its everywhere. people go out of their way to talk about how indian immigrants are 'the worst kind of immigrants' when its people working their ass off to get a medical degree while working underpaid jobs in delivery just to get a better life.

it's actually crazy like kind of unbelievable how much racism ppl just expect you to put up with to be polite. like i have so many little experiences where a friend-of-a-friend said something awful and racist to me and i am very clearly hurt and upset and then the friend just expects me to be polite and not say anything not react not even be angry. like when ur not white ur never allowed to be angry. if ur angry ur being too aggressive. you never get to expect an apology, either. expecting an apology for the racist way people hurt you is always asking too much. you never get an apology. you never get to be angry. you never get to say it hurt you. you're just supposed to pretend you didn't hear it, didn't read it, didn't notice. you let things go because it's the only way to have friends.
