She startled awake to her cell phone’s obnoxious ring. She threw her arm over her eyes as she tried to ignore the ringing. It stopped only to begin again with the tone reserved for him. Elise let out a groan knowing full well she shouldn’t answer, but she also knew he wouldn’t stop until she did. He only called her when he was drunk and alone. Even drunk he knew she would answer.
“What Logan?” She answered the phone as her right arm stretched across her body, grasping for the lamp switch. “Logan?” The light flicked on as she spoke into the quiet room.
“Let me in, I’m outside.” His words were slurred and his accent was thicker.
“You know I can’t.” She sighed and crawled out of her bed. Her covers rumpled and askew across the bed, evidence of her deep sleep prior to his call.
“But I know you will,” he paused seeming to think over something. “I saw your shadow move across the ceiling in your room through the window.”
She had started down the stairs of the second floor when she heard a ‘thud’ and a mumbled ‘shit’ at the door.
“Come on Darlin’, I promise I’ll leave when you ask.” But they knew it was a promise he couldn’t and wouldn’t keep.
With a click, the deadbolt slid free and Elise cracked the door, stepping to the side automatically. The muscular Green Beret filled the doorway. A small circle of red marked his forehead where he had undoubtedly struck his head on the door in his drunken stupor. She wanted to reach out and stroke the red mark away but held back the urge.
Despite the blur seen through the man’s eyes, he moved quickly. Within seconds of the door being opened, Elise found herself pressed against the wall by him. A small gasp escaped from her lips, which caused his eyes to slip down to them.
“What are you doing here, Logan?” She asked trying to slow her rapid breathing.
“Can’t I visit my friend?” His head cocked ever so slightly to the left with a single arched brow.
“Not this late or in this state.” Her hands moved to lightly press on his pectorals as if they had a mind of their own.
“And what state would that be Darlin’?” His head lowered as he inched closer. Right hand placed on her hip holding her firmly in place. Leaving no room for escape… not that her body wanted to, that was one battle her mind always lost.
“Drunk.” Her whisper managed to make it out despite their brushing lips.
“Better take advantage of it then.” His left hand left the wall and took hold of her nape. Pulling her into his kiss. She pushed against his chest, forcing him to break the kiss with a growl.
“We can’t.” Her words came in another whisper as she pressed her forehead to his chest.
“Forget the logic. Be in the moment with me.” He cupped her jaw with both hands, forcing her to look him in the eye for the first time that night.
“You’re bad for me. You’ll leave again. I’ll be broken.” She began to rattle off reasons that she shouldn’t invite him into her bed.
“Stop thinking.” Her eyes flicked around the hall before landing back on his ocean blues with the small island of brown. A tear slid silently down her cheek, leaving a small trail behind it.
His hand on her nape left to cup her jaw and wipe away the lone tear.
“No tears, not tonight. Tonight we spend together like I’m not leaving in two days. Just like we used to. No feelings, just scratching an itch.”
Elise pushes hard on his chest, making space between them. Tears fall freely down her cheeks as she shakes her head. Loose strands hit her cheeks with each shake.
“I can’t do this. Not again.”
“What can’t you do Darlin’?”
“No feelings…” She takes a shaky breath before continuing, “if I sleep with you, I won’t get over you.”
His brows draw together, “What do you mean?”
“I have feelings for you, Sy.” His arms drop to his sides, taken aback by her sudden confession. She uses this as her get-away to side-step, creating more distance, and crossing her arms.
Her confession seemed to sober the soldier. His alcohol-induced rosy cheeks flushed white and his mouth dried. He stumbled in his mind, trying desperately to find something, anything, to say to her. To tell her he felt the same but couldn’t- no, wouldn’t do another long-distance relationship.
His last relationship, an engagement, hadn’t ended well. A ‘Dear John,’ letter type of ending. Got back from his tour to find she had sold all of his things. Well, except for the few items Elise had managed to save.
Elise took his silence as the only thing she could think of, he didn’t reciprocate her feelings. She started to the door, grabbing the handle and turning it. The door opened and Sy turned at the sound.
“Please,” her voice cracked, “please leave.” Sy’s mouth opened and then closed several times.
“Lis,” Her head started shaking ‘no’ quickly.
She didn’t want to hear any excuses from him. He took a step towards her but she pointed to the door.
“Lis, please listen to me.” He took hold of her arms. His grip was firm but gentle all the same. He tried to meet her eyes but she wouldn’t let him. A tear slid down her cheek.
“Logan, leave. Now!” Her eyes finally met his and instead of their welcoming light green, they were dark and cold.
He walked out the door, holding back his own emotions when he hears the door slam followed by her strangled cry.
