Berserk is the worst great manga I’ve ever read it’s literally so good and it sucks and I hate it and I’m obsessed with it as well
Some of the most fascinating pieces of character writing I’ve ever seen illustrated in gorgeous detail with charming humor and the most gratuitous scenes of sexual violence and sexualization of extremely young girls and guts is a deeply complicated character with very understandable struggles and everyone falls in love with him or wants him dead and constantly talks about how cool he is or is jealous of how cool he is and also the fight scenes are so fucking repetitive and sometimes difficult to even read but the gore is illustrated in gorgeous gruesome horror but then the only woman villain is themed after being a woman and materializes tits-first for no reason and most of the female characters struggles are central to having survived sexual assault but that’s true of guts as well and it adds incredible depth to his struggles in building interpersonal relationships but also casca barely gets to be her own character for a huge portion of the story because her own sexual trauma just completely broke her mind and rendered her mute and barely able to comprehend the world around her and entirely without agency but not ALL of the women are written like that because Farnese is her own deeply complicated character that has quite a lot of agency in making her own decisions even if she herself doesn’t think so and in fact a great deal of her narrative revolves around trying to find that agency within herself to become her own person because she sees herself as entirely hollow because she was raised almost ornamentally by her nobleman father that barely saw her as a person but then also she’s lead to discover her self worth partly in BECOMING A BABY SITTER FOR CASCA and being relegated to a mother figure for casca as well as for the children who joined the group but then that’s not SO terrible because it’s only one reason that she starts to become more confident in her own decisions and she continues to be validated even by her own family members who acknowledge that her horrible behavior as a child shouldn’t weigh so heavily on her conscience because she was barely given any guidance by her parents so how could she have known better so maybe I could convince myself that it wasn’t violently misogynist and creepy at times except that HE MADE THE LITTLE GIRL WITCH IN LOVE WITH GUTS AND HAVE HER FALL ON HIS BED WHILE NAKED FOR A GAG and basically I’m blowing this whole shit up but I’m going to keep reading it until I get to the end
