New Year
There's already been a whole heap of stuff gone on this term and we're not even out of winter yet! Alex got a record player that we can (and will) start sampling with. We both bought a lot more vinyl. Things are stepping up for my Max/MSP work with a audio/visual program I'm working on. And me, Alex and Rose are planning to do an Acoustic Live Lounge next month! Should be really good experience for me not only on bass, but also vocally and possibly on ukulele!
So me and my friend Alex have been playing with my record player
It's got a variable speed controller, so I'm excited about using that as a creative modulation wheel instrument.Then we got onto the idea that you could mix this with say, a machine, and make loop art.
So now Alex is excited about sampling from it too! Great stuff to do next semester!
This is so good. Damian Kulash of OK Go has such deep thoughts on the music industry.
I'm really enjoying doing a load of work with samplers on logic at the moment, but listening to this makes me miss using instruments. I can't get a good drum sound with my samples, mostly because i don't know how. That said, i've made a good gritty synth from a small portion of a pan lid recording.Â
I think what I'm enjoying most so far, is the actual sound editing, and not the composition. I love getting a really nice sound and working with Logic to create art through sound and not through music.
My keyboard skills are improving also!
Does anyone use 8tracks? If you don’t you should, its nice. You use tags to find playlists to suit what you’re looking for. I love this track that I found on there; perfect for how I’m composing at the moment!
This is a sort of evolving sound scape made in Logic today. I'm really pleased with this actually, it was the fruit of a very peaceful hour. I’ll probably edit again and bounce a better version at some point. Please have a listen and tell me what you think!
The instruments are a synth pad, a clarinet, and a timpani; all with heavy effects. I'm going in tomorrow to do some more of the same thing, only probably a little more structured.
So I need to start getting influenced for this computer composition. One thing I'd like to let influence me is Royksopp. Have you heard of them, I'm sure you'll recognise something off this album.
I need to start taking computer composition more seriously.
The other night i had an epiphany. Philip Thomas had said in an improvisation lecture, that we need to let our imagination direct our technique. I feel the same is true of composition too. We shouldnt be limited by what sounds we already have or know, instead our technique should be led by our creativity and imagination. I feel like sound synthesis would truly free me. That's why I'm now so interested in MAX/MSP and interactive sound design.
