i’m actually not a fan of the word 'system' for myself, but i can’t find any better alternative. group, collective, family, constellation, galaxy, library… some of these sound nice but none really feels right. I saw someone use the word 'circle' and that’s probably the most relatable one i’ve seen yet? but still… an inch off. i’ll keep looking… if anyone has other alternatives please share with me!…

It’s that time of year to say no to the Salvation Army.

Never forget they let a Trans woman die instead of helping her.

Never forget they have tossed entire families on the street for having an LGBT child.

Never forget they tell non Christian families that unless they convert they will not help them.

Never forget that the Salvation Army is bigoted and hateful, many of the bell ringers routinely heckle and harass LGBT couples.

It’s time for my annual My Mom story.

My mom and grandma used to volunteer a lot for the local Salvation Army, mostly helping with their fabric sale. Mom mostly did it for something to do with grandma.

I held my tongue for awhile, but finally I said “Mom, the SA has some really problematic policies. I’m not telling you what to do, but you might want to look into it.”

She did.

Keep in mind my mom is a boomer white lady living in a modest Midwestern city.

She didn’t like the things she found out. She went directly to the leaders of their chapter and asked, “If a gay or trans person came to you for help, what would you do?”

They said: “We’d direct them to someone who could help them.”

Her: “But that’s supposed to be YOU.”

Them: “We’re not equipped to help them” (or some other vagueing bullshit)

My mom (aka not stupid): Fuck this shit, I’m out.

She resigned from the SA. A lot of her friends asked why. She told them why.

Over the next year, over sixty people left the local SA, citing their views on lgbtq people as the reason.

Why do mental health professionals ask me for one instance of "hurtful memories" when multiple of us have expressed that it is layers. There is not just one thing. It started when we were extremely young and everything they do present is tied into past things I and they have done. They didn't just wake up one day and decide they were going to get physical, it was layers of psychological things that lead up to them finally beginning physically attacking us.

It's still not entirely physically. It can be bringing up things from the past (ie hospital visits for mental health), degrading based on needs (ie medicine), degrading based on conditions (ie Tourette's), not being good enough for the family, not obeying correctly, et cetera.

I think I experience semi-hallucinations. Like, maybe I saw something. Maybe I felt something. Maybe I smelled something. But I can't be sure. I will elaborate later.

Okay so. I'm a really paranoid person, since I hold paranoias about the world around us. Constantly worried about something bad happening and my paranoias becoming true, right? So, I think the paranoia is starting to give me sensations and visuals that would confirm it.

As far as I can tell, nobody else in the system experiences this? I'm just uniquely experiencing bugs crawling down my arms until I look. Or cockroaches on the walls until I blink. Or the smell of cologne on a presence behind me. And then in a second, it just isn't there.

Done something big. Told our therapist how many of us there are. Shock and horror on her face, but she didn't seem upset.

She asked how we keep up with everyone. I said Amelia does (it's true. He forgets sometimes, but he's the best at *snap* oh that's —) and we have it write down.

I hate having a sp/in death. Nobody wants to talk about it, but I have so much to say. I could give the the history of dissection, I could give you the rituals (mostly white American), I could tell you the stages, I could tell you the process in cleaning decomp, I could even tell you the bugs that would eat you (in general, it does depend on the place of death). Yet, what do I get? Misery.

Nobody wants to be enlightened. Nobody lives. Nobody has whimsy.

A comic about the spectrum of responses to stress - we talk alot about the more extreme ends of this and trauma, but the more subtle and every day responses can be harder to spot. if we can understand our own and other’s responses better, problems Are easier to confront and blaming is less likely to happen :) hope it’s helpful!!

Telling everyone your clean even though the body is not because you didn't do it. I know we should take some responsibility, but it's not fair. I didn't do it. I'm clean.

I think that a lot of the older generations don’t understand that when millennials and gen z say we don’t want kids it’s not because we’re “anti kids” or anything like that, in fact it’s kind of the opposite. Our generations are some of the first to recognize that kids are entitled to respect and happiness as much as adults, and for a lot of us we know we would not be able to raise happy children and therefore know we shouldn’t have them.

“Oh but you’ll want kids when you’re older!” Are you sure? Because a lot of the people who say that are people who had kids and did not enjoy it. People who had kids and were miserable, people who only really started liking their kids when they weren’t kids anymore, people who get mad when they see children in public. My own mother constantly tells me I’ll change my mind, then later she’ll say things like “I don’t have a maternal bone in my body.” “You’re so much more enjoyable to be around now that you’re older.” “I’m glad you were such a mature kid, I barely had to raise you.”

People used to have kids just because. They didn’t think about if they’d actually be good parents, if they actually wanted kids, if their kids would be happy, if their kids would be growing up in a healthy environment. But now we’re starting to recognize that having kids should be a much more thought out and informed decision. We’re starting to recognize that it’s not just about us.

I say this as someone who works at a nonprofit: the attitude “someone who has nothing will be grateful for anything” is harmful and dehumanizing when it’s used to justify donating something ripped, stained, or expired to someone less fortunate.

Homeless people deserve clothing with good structural integrity. Victims of house fires deserve linens that are free of stains. No one should have to eat expired food. It’s disrespectful to give people scraps when they’re already hurting.

Please, out of respect for your fellow humans, check the dates on your food donations before you drop them off.

To the people justifying this with "food is fine to eat past date". If you can understand "giving someone a penny* can be a fuck you" then maybe that might help you get your mind around why this is cruel

“Beggars can’t be choosers” quite literally strips us of our autonomy, boundaries, and ability to consent. It’s manipulative and disrespectful.

Beggars should be choosers. We know what we need. We know what does and doesn’t work for us. We know our bodies, our allergies, our comfort foods.

When I lived in a youth shelter, we regularly got “dump donations” of absolute garbage. There was someone who donated a box of dirty toothbrushes and rusty razor blades. Someone donated almost a dozen fully wooden underarm crutches. People would leave garbage bags filled with moldy food by the door. It’s unsafe and insulting.

Additionally, having lived in homeless encampments, when people just drop off their junk, it makes our encampment look dirty and unkempt, which makes it more likely to get swept and displace our community.

When all you have to wear is donated clothes, and every article of donated clothing is covered is stains, ripped, worn out, etc. it makes you look (to the rest of society) disgusting and unworthy of care and compassion. I saved up money while homeless to get thrifted “nice looking” clothes. I was wearing inappropriate clothing for the weather I was in, BUT I didn’t get kicked out of the warm cafe I could sit and sip a tea in for hours. I was able to use more public restrooms because I looked like a paying customer. People respected me more. I gained access to certain housed privileges like that.
