Through the ages, purple has always been associated with royalty, nobility, prestige, mystery, magic, power and luxury. Purple is often used to portray rich powerful kings, leaders, magicians and even sorcerers. The colour purple relates to the world of imagination and the need to escape the practical and everyday life. It’s the daydreamers escape from reality, it assists those seeking the meaning of life and spiritual fulfilment. (x)

The thing is, Kaz isn’t a misguided child. He knows perfectly well that his choices and methods of surviving in Kettedam left his morals in tatters. Overall, he isn’t a great person and he’s the farthest thing from the innocent little boy who arrived in Ketterdam with his brother. He teeters on the border of chaotic neutral so much that even the Dregs—one of the most feared gangs in the Barrel—have their doubts about his character. 

Yet, he appeals to readers because he simply survives. Kaz Brekker went through absolute hell and clawed his way out of that dark place. He beat death again and again, relying on greed, persuasion, and trickery to build himself into Ketterdam’s most legendary Barrel boss. Regardless of his morals, his resilience and his drive to carry out what he planned are both incredibly impressive traits. And the fact that he survives with just these factors after getting everything taken away from him? That’s a story for the history books, and something that can actually help a lot of people who could be struggling to survive their own personal hell. 

And that is why Kaz Brekker will forever be my favorite morally gray character of YA lit; thanks for coming to my TED talk.
