Trendkiller's Top 10 Albums Of 2013
Words by Jack King. (@Jackingy)
10. Panic! At The Disco- Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die
The album title says it all. The Las Vegas ‘emo’ heroes have returned with a massive change in direction. Presenting us with Panic!’s usual style of strange songwriting this time drizzled in weird pop electronics delivering to us with bangers like Miss Jackson, This Is Gospel and Nicotine.
9. Nails- Abandon All Life
In a stark contrast to the polished and well produced Panic! album, Abandon All Life is the sound of raw anger and aggression. Sounding like a mix between Power Violence, Hardcore and a devastating car crash, this definitely isn’t an album to play for your nan.
8. Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats- Mind Control
What? The extremely average and dull 13 by Black Sabbath should be on this list? Nah, it doesn’t matter if it was made by 3/4s of the band who invented heavy metal, a boring album is an boring album. Besides, why would you listen to that snooze record when some of the best sounding riffs and stoner rock songs ever written by the mysterious Unlce Acid and The Deadbeats. Imagine being steamrolled by amazing riffs again and again and again. RIFFS.
7. The Dillinger Escape Plan- One Of Us Is The Killer
It’s that 100% pure madness that DEP bring us every time. They’ve never been catchier, heavier, or Mike Patton-ier. Not only are songs like Prancer, Nothing’s Funny and the title track some of the best songs of the year, but some of the best songs in Dillinger’s arsenal of tunes.

6. Black Shapes- SLEEP, SLEEP, SLEEP
Is it stoner? Is it hardcore? DOES IT MATTER? It’s a dark and disturbing album that surprises and enthralls you, and it’s only their first album! Have a listen if you like bands that don’t sound like anyone else.

5. A Day To Remember- Common Courtesy
No, shut up. It’s okay to like A Day To Remember, stop giving people shit for it. They write the catchiest chorus going and their hardcore parts are genuinely enjoyable which is something that can’t be said for a lot of hardcore bands out there right now. If Right Back At It Again doesn’t make you possi jump like a madman then you’re about as much fun as David Mitchell at an office party. If this entry on the list wasn’t serious or artistic enough then look at the next one.
4. Cult Of Luna- Vertikal
One of the first gems to come out this year. Demanding yet rewarding. There isn’t much I can say about this masterpeice that wasn’t said in my review.

Palm Reader- Bad Weather
In my opinion, THE most promising band in hardcore punk right now. With the songwriting ability, pure brilliance and understanding of what they’re doing they have the ability to reach the size Gallows got with Grey Britain, and possibly even bigger. Their debut Bad Weather features career making songs like Unwanted Guest, Spineless, Seeing and Believing and Noble host, however every song on the album is flawless, it’s one of those records that you get into so much that you can listen to it front to back several times in a row.
2. The Ocean- Pelagial
Creative, original, amazing concept, beautiful album.
To quote my own review: “The Ocean have created a masterpiece with ‘Pelagial’. It’s one of those albums that should make people excited that such musical creativity exists and is being put to such good use. The Ocean is the most mysterious yet brilliant entities on this planet, and this time I’m talking about the band”.

1. letlive. - The Blackest Beautiful
The LA post hardcore crew truly live up to their nick name ‘soul punx’ with this album. Not many records have as much of a soul and personality as this one. This album is almost a bigger entity than the band that wrote it. If any album on this list is going to have an immortal legacy then it’s this one. Whilst you may be reading and think that sounds like meaningless dribble, in 10 years time when we WILL celebrating the anniversary of this album. It’s truly the most important and meaningful record this year.
