Hi Mark, do you know when the Mood Swings deck will be shipped out to people that attended your talk at MagicCon Vegas?
Hopefully very soon. They've been finalizing addresses which took a bit longer than expected.
Validating a list of addresses takes longer than you'd expect, especially for a last-minute process.
Hi Mark, I was wondering, what is the most players you have tried a game of Mood Swings with? If higher than 4, how did it go?
I’ve never played more than 4. If you have enough cards the game can support it, but the game takes a bit longer.
Part of my motivation for getting 2 decks was in case I had a group of 5 or 6. After some more thought though, I'll only do it if *everyone* has played before, and really wants to. Otherwise, I'll split the group into 2 pods. If there's enough newbies that I can't put them all in a pod with me, I'll bow out and be the teacher/judge for at least one game.
The reason is board complexity. I've played enough to know that most games, you'll play close to the maximum number of rounds. The rubber-banding mechanisms are very strong, making it hard for one player to win quickly. Until there's a board wipe, the average number of cards on the board will increase pretty quickly with more players. It should be roughly proportional to the number of cards you need for each player count:
2: 14
3: 27
4: 44
5: 65
6: 90
So, a 4-player game triples the board complexity, compared to a 2-player game. A 6-player game is 6 times as complex!
If I were customizing a deck for 6-player play, I'd put in extra mass-destruction cards. (Wrath of course, but also cards like Anger and Contempt.) Part of me wishes I'd gotten the 5-pack, so I could make that customized deck. 😅
When I learned to play at the Issaquah event, Maro started by having us play in pairs. Depending on who I'm teaching, I might do that. If I split people into groups of 2 or 3, my 90 cards can teach up to 12 people!
is there a better place to see all the mood swings cards than the news article? Like a mood-Gatherer? An emotiondex?
The card gallery is currently the only place you can see all the cards.
Check out all the cards from Mood Swings, available only on MagicSecretLair.com.

Hey MaRo, long time reader, second time asker. A year ago, I invoked the ancient rite of BIRTHDAY TRIVIA about Drive to Work. My dad had just started listening to your podcast from the start. He frequently shares his thoughts & insights with me. He says he began this as a gatherer but now this is a completist goal. He has listened to the first 653 podcasts (almost halfway). He is looking forward to episode 791 because you discuss Wall of Spears. His favorite Commander deck is built around the card that shares our family name. It is a defender deck built around walls.
His question: when you retire, which guests come to mind to celebrate your the completion of your Drive to Work journey?
PS — you are allowed to break your current record of eleven guests.
I have not thought about my final “Drive to Work” episode. I assume it is many years away.
Which episode was eleven guests?
I kind of like the idea of "Drive to Work: Retirement Edition." It would just be Mark trying to finish out his various series, and telling stories about the last sets he lead. Maybe interviews too, to fill in the gaps in his knowledge.
Probably the recording & release rates would slow down. Maybe Wizards would keep him on as a freelancer, though. It hardly seems fair for him to keep doing it for free.
How many mood swing games were played this weekend?
Many. We had four flights yesterday.
I was at the last flight. I don't quite remember how many people were there, but that's probably 20-30 games. Maybe 100-150 games over the evening, depending on whether the other flights filled up.
(That's not including people who played with their MagicCon decks, of course)
Hey Mark! I know this is very specific, but can I request a land that specifically cares about both Wolves and Werewolves? Werewolf decks tend to play many Wolf cards as well, so all the "choose a creature type" style of lands are a bit awkward. I was disappointed that Vampires got their own land in Innistrad: Crimson Vow but there was no equivalent for Werewolves (and Wolves) in Midnight Hunt. Thanks! 🐺
I’ll see what I can do.
This isn't quite what you're asking for, but are you already playing Kessig Wolf Run? It was designed to play well with werewolves, in the same way that Innistrad wolves do.
Un-card name suggestion: Net Troll
: )
Is that a troll with a net, or a verb?
If/when a batch that includes players :)
If.
"Any target" includes both!
I think fandom analysis on the whole would be a lot more fun and interesting if it took the sort of attitude a great many of my lit professors did, and the idea was to look at the text, see what you think it's saying, or even COULD be saying, and let's fuck around with that idea. I got four years of hearing insane takes on stuff and I was extremely fortunate to go a school with small enough class sizes and a dedicated enough faculty that in many respects, wild theorizing was encouraged.
One of my professors was straight up like "I don't want you reading papers about this book until we finish it!" and we had writing things for the first 20 minutes of every class because he wanted to know what WE thought, not what we had become convinced was THE thing to think.
When I was in my second year of college, I spiraled out into this whole "Jane Eyre is a lesbian!" thing, and my professor (not the same guy as above but delightfully insane in her own right) was like, "Wow, I've never heard this from anyone," and instead of being like, "um this is not what has been agreed upon by everyone else" went "Tell me more." Now, as a forty year old woman who has never stopped engaging with stories on both an enjoyment and academic level, the paper I would write with age and distance would be more "Homosociality, desire, and the domesticated male in Jane Eyre" or something like that, nineteen year old me was a little reductive and simple, but same vibes.
But my professor did not think I was right, she thought I was being INTERESTING, and so she encouraged me and championed me to write that paper and I actually presented it at the student division of a conference! The cool thing about that was, that when I was defending it, I was having to think about it, but it was in the spirit of collaboration, it felt like. No one was trying to 'win' the conversation.
Doc, what the fuck are you--I saw a really interesting thing this morning, someone talking about Shrek, of all things, and how they thought it was about how you cannot turn an ogre into a man, but he can make you become an ogre. And I immediately went, "Wow! Okay, interesting, not how I read that at all, TELL ME MORE." It was really jarring for me, then, to see pretty much every comment be like, 'uh you are wrong and also stupid." Sure, maybe that's not the intention of the work, but I don't for one goddamn motherfucking second think Charlie Bronte was sitting down going "I am going to write a woman so gay..." nor do I think the read of her as same sex-attracted is the end all be all of interpretations. It's mine, for sure! But like...talking about stories is supposed to be fun and it's supposed to be about possibility.
That one post got me thinking about how we are, in fandom often all looking at this same text, and there's immense pressure to have a 'right' interpretation--I was at the nexus of so many Sailor Moon fandom wars, and while I got into a few tussles, I was also stupid to do that. This characters are not real, and I was shutting down POSSIBILITY. And even after I was like, 'Wow, I don't think this is actually a very fun way to do stuff" it turns out you can't magically give everyone the same revelation you have simultaneously. Which is upsetting. And I see these same patterns repeat over and over and over again.
In my old age, I'm less interested in he "He would not say that" and more interested in "Cool, tell me why he would say that?"
Don't misunderstand me, there are points of view and ideas on different texts where I'm like, "Hm. I don't care to engage with that." Remember that the window we're looking out of is as important as what we're looking at, and will DOUBTLESS change the appearance. But the whole reason we have each other is to try and find other windows! It's not actually to find someone who is the next pane of glass in your same window. I miss that environment, where you could trust that everyone coming to the table was engaging with the same ground rules and that there was an expectation of, detachment doesn't quite get to the heart of what I'm talking about, but we were expected not to take the text or the analysis of it personally, even when it was hard. And sometimes it was. But I think it led to me having--for example it's crazy to me to have one 'right read' on any given text. I had a SUPER FUCKING ANIMATED conversation with a fellow lit nerd about whether or not GdT's Frankenstein was emotionally faithful to the text (which is not the same as being literally faithful nor the same as being good)and it was so fun, EVEN THOUGH we were coming at it completely opposed. But it was so fucking fun.
I wish I could do that with anime and cartoons, but you can't. People take Shrek personally. So I'll never have that same fun.
ANYWAY SORRY I AM DRINKING COFFEE AND MY DAUGHTER ISN'T HERE I HAVE TOO MUCH FREE TIME.
Yes!! Also want to highlight this great exchange between @beloved-child-of-the-house and op from the notes:
Phrases I think are delightful and useful:

i really im absolutely astounded at the phenomenal job that MIB did not to be racist against aliens, despite being a movie about secret agents chasing evil aliens. that scene where jay helps an alien mother to give birth is probably one of the most humanizing moments for an Other ive seen in a movie ever.
like it grabs the body snatcher trope from the cold war "aliens are all around you, hidden in diguzise, they could be any one of us!" and then it says "and theyre just people, theyre literally just people trying to live their lives and thats fine"
you literally have a whooe scene where a cop stands out because he says "i dont care how menacibg or threatning someone looks im not going to shoot them if there is a reasonable explination for what theyre doing, one is sneezing and one is just doing excercise", and that is the guy that gets aproved to join MIB.
The movie has a real love for NYC and immigrant culture as a part of that. The opening scene where K welcomes the undocumented immigrants to the United States. One alien greets another and says he's ordered him pierogi. A lot of them are refugees from their home worlds who just want to survive.
Look.
As a Californian, I was not a fan of Kamala Harris's presidential candidacy. I really feel like she did not align with me on some pretty fundamental issues and I wish the Democrats had had an actual primary in 2024 so that she could have been soundly trounced by better candidates like she was in 2020.
Kamala Harris was a candidate that I was *at best* lukewarm on.
Okay? Okay.
Now. Democrats.
If you dipshits run Gavin Newsom in 2028 or pull any stupid fucking tricks to give him a better position in the primary (like the stupid fucking trick you lucky assholes pulled by not putting support behind a democratic candidate for the recall as a safety measure), i am going to start committing thematic crimes and/or assembling a killdozer.
I was not particularly fond of Kamala Harris, but I fucking *loathe* Governor Gavin "Homeless Sweeps" Newsom. Kamala was not great, but she was also not "using the destruction/disruption of a homeless encampment with her own two hands as a photo op" bad. She was not "I wouldn't want my daughter playing college sports against a trans woman" bad. She was not "inviting Charlie Goddamned Kirk on the first episode of her new podcast to ask advice about running to get approval from fucking republicans" bad.
If, in three years, I have to listen to a bunch of democrats telling me that there's no better choice and I have to vote blue no matter who and the blue that they are handing me is *this motherfucking ghoul* I am going to end up in a federal prison so if you happen to be a democrat and you happen to be reading my blog I would really like it if your party could run better candidates than this piece of shit so if you hear people starting to mumble about how "Well maybe Gavin Newsom has some good policies, he's going to be better for LGBTQIA folks than Vance and he's got experience running a big state" please let them know what a tremendous piece of shit he is so I don't have to walk away from super tuesday and hear that this greasy fuck is the lesser of two evils.
You know how after the fires in January Trump said "we're going to release the water, that water from up North, it's going to come down through the state, we're going to bring it to the cities, instead of giving it to the fish - which are bad fish anyway, too small - that don't need our water, we're going to open the dams, we're going to fill the river" and everyone who knows anything about water infrastructure in california promptly went "what the fuck are you TALKING about are you INSANE that is an awful idea"? You know, that thing? That's what it feels like to see people discussing Gavin Newsom as a national candidate.
Here he is getting ready to throw away the place where somebody sleeps while running a state that has more than twice as many unhoused people as it has shelter beds. This CNN article about Newsom's order to dismantle homeless encampments ends with a quote about tents like the one the governor is throwing away here:
“Every time that you like regain a tent and maybe some blankets and a couple of outfits and just get enough stuff around you to start to really feel – I’m not going to say normal – like you have a safety zone, it’s gone,” he said. “Even though it’s a tent and a few things, as soon as you get to that point, in that moment, it’s wiped out again… Nobody’s asking the question. The voters, the people. Where are the people going? If they’re not in my neighborhood now, then whose neighborhood are they going to if you don’t have enough shelter beds in your city?”
I personally know people who died after Newsom ordered encampment sweeps. I fucking hate this guy.
Seriously.
So many people had bad shit to say about Biden and Harris, but trust me it can get so much worse in regards to Shitty Dems.
Like I am ride or die vote blue no matter who, but but Newsom is a guy that would make me rethink that. policy.
(Also its a flash in the pan compared to some other stuff, but Newsom also sabotaged the state of California's investigation into Activision Blizzards dirty dealings by firing a key lawyer leading the investigation, at the behest of his buddy, CEO of Activision Blizzard and BFF to Jeffrey Eptstein Bobby Kottick).
Like a lot of people like to talk about how the Democrats and GOP are exactly the same and I just roll my eyes at that sort of talk, but in this case no, no, Newsom would be as bad as a Republican president, maybe not Trump bad, but he would definitely be a bad time for pretty much everyone.
Trump's waging war on US cities, we're not even to the midterms and you're already starting this bullshit
Leftists Before the Primary: Don't run shitty candidates, I would like to vote for a candidate who actually reflects my values rather than one who I have voted against in at least three elections because he has policy positions that I *DEEPLY DISAGREE WITH AND FIND MORALLY REPUGNANT.*
Democrats Before the Primary: Don't dismiss anyone! We've got to do better than Trump so we've got to be moderate to attract people from the center to vote for the democrats! Let's be a coalition for once instead of tearing each other apart like the left always does! Stop complaining and just support the democrats for once in your annoying leftist lives!
Leftists During the Primary: I am going to vote for the farthest left candidate possible and talk a lot about it and say that if this candidate doesn't win maybe I'll sit the election out because I support this candidate's policy positions and if they have a strong presence in the primaries other candidates will likely move toward their positions.
Democrats During the Primary: Don't you care about electability?!!?!?! You want to nominate a SOCIALIST for the presidency?!? That is RIDICULOUS you have to be strategic, you have to pick the candidate who is most likely to win in the general, so you have to pick the person who is most qualified and least offensive and has opinions on a muscular military strategy that are in line with Bush-era republicans, that's just the way it is, otherwise you're throwing away your vote. That's why we've got to use our coalition power to undermine the candidate with popular support - the voters aren't thinking strategically and are going to select an unelectable candidate.
Leftists After the Primary: You have nominated a shit candidate and I don't want to vote for them unless they have less shit policies. I will loudly discuss my intentions to stay home until we have a democrat candidate who isn't talking about how out of control the border is (because the border isn't out of control and we should be talking about amnesty not deportation). Candidate, if you want me to vote for you, you have to be less shitty.
Democrats After the Primary: Vote blue no matter who! Vote blue no matter who! If you don't vote for someone who has bloodthirsty defense attitudes similar to those you protested against in the 2000s and has personally worked at companies that built the surveillance state you're ceding the ground to fascism!
Leftists After the Election (Dems Win): Now that you have won, I am going to criticize your shit policies and protest your border crackdowns and and yell at you for not doing enough to protect workers or marginalized groups and for not rescheduling marijuana or making any attempt to pack the court.
Democrats After the Election (Dems Win): Let people enjoy their victory! We worked hard for this! Stop being so critical! They're doing the best they can but republicans in congress won't cooperate and the anti-choice, anti-labor, pro-lobby democrat congresspeople we ran in purple districts as a concession to 'moderates' have managed to foil our plans to make things better, so we just have to hold the line until the midterms!
Leftists After the Election (Dems Lose): This sucks, but things would have sucked anyway. I wish you had run someone who sucked less. Let's get back to protesting and doing taillight checks.
Dems After the Election (Dems Lose): This is your fault for not supporting democrats!
Both parties suck, both parties are disliked, Republicans have gamed the system harder to make it easier for them to win. There are a shitload of voters up for grabs who feel like they've been left behind by everyone who could probably be swayed by policies like medicare for all or amnesty for immigrants or free college, but instead the dems spent the last election sucking Liz Cheney's asshole and talking about how we were going to have the strongest military in the world.
Shut the fuck up. Now is exactly the time for leftists to yell about this bullshit. Run better people in the primaries. We're telling you that Newsom is both a bad candidate (because he's a fucking conservative) and that he will lose to the republicans (because he's a smarmy little fuck from California with no spine).
Before Trump was attacking Los Angeles, Newsom was doing the same thing (by tearing down homeless encampments and arresting the people who were trying to protect the only place they had to sleep). Protesting Trump and protesting Newsom come with the same cops and the same teargas from where I'm standing, which is why I'm saying something about it NOW.
Don't run this asshole, and tell people who are talking about running him that he is incredibly unpopular in his own state and is INCREDIBLY conservative.
May I request a kill spell called "Kindness"?
: )
Seems more likely to be an Incarnation, to me. And that way, you have to earn the joke!
Mathemagics looks awesome, but you've said in the past that one of the lessons of Unhinged was that even simple fractions like 1/2 confused a significant proportion of the player base. Powers are higher complexity than that - is it the fact that the reminder text can spell out all likely scenarios the part that makes this printable?
It is also one high rarity card as opposed to a whole high as-fan theme.
And yes, the reminder text helps a lot.
I love Mathemagics, and immediately sent it to other people who I thought would enjoy it. I think some people are focusing on the 2^x part, and not on the whole equation.
Let m, the mana value of the spell, be an even number ≥ 2.
The number of cards drawn is c = 2^[(m-2)/2].
What sorts of things do you think players would want to see in a return to Alara?
Why don’t you all tell me what you’d like to see?
Colored artifacts have become a lot more common, but in Alara I'd like to see their flavor continue to be etherium-based. That probably means concentrating them in WUB. There could be some in other colors, showing their growing usage of etherium.
Are there any plans to revisit the cosmic card concept that was cut from edge of eternities? I could see reality fracture having something like that.
It got cut for logistical printing issues, not something easily solved.
That's not a no, but it seems too soon for that to be the new thing that's become possible for Reality Fracture.
My bet is that they're now able to guarantee certain cards are collated together (to an acceptable degree). That was something they wanted as far back as Innistrad, and it would work great for getting across a "mirrored timelines" flavor. It would also create interesting opportunities for pick-two draft.
