REVIEW: ...one rifle per family.
...one rifle per family. is great; it’s probably Bambu‘s best work. After I heard it in its entirety (twice), I gave Bam a congratulations and told him just that.
But before you read any further, let me preface this “review” by saying that I don’t normally write music reviews. I’m not a music snob by any means, but I know what I like and I know how shit makes me feel. I’m not about to dissect songs and talk about sound quality. I’m writing this as a fan, as most of you are.
I wasn’t expecting to receive my press copy at the time that I did. I was immersed in work when I got the email. I opened it, downloaded it, and let it play as background noise. But the first track, “Bronze Watch”, already got me to stop and listen. Funny because on that one, Bam actually says, “I’m trying to grab your focus by the eighth bar of the first verse.” And he did just that. As I continued on to the rest of the album, I took notice of the production. It’s the production, in my opinion, that separates ...one rifle per family. from its predecessors.
In true Bambu form, he talks of oppression, education, Los Angeles, Philippines, and family. But amidst his call to organize and his attempt to raise awareness, is actually his own narrative. I somehow found ...one rifle per family. to be more of a personal feat than anything. You get caught up in stories about his mom, his pops, his son. You begin to understand Bam as a dad, a son, a Los Angeleno, an ex-gangster, an ex-marine.
Just as the beginning grabbed my attention, so did the end, with Bambu’s ode to his city called “Where You From”. It’s a real account of what it’s like to live here, which is a topic that has been heavy on my mind. Lately, I’ve been talking with New Yorkers that think we have it easy, that there isn’t struggle here. I call bullshit. Listen to this track. Now let me once again say congratulations to my friend, Bambu. I’m proud of this, and I really hope this isn’t your last one.

Worlds collide…
Rick & Ray throws a monthly event called LIFESWELL. It has evolved from a platform to feature our roster of talent into a medium to highlight industry related events. We’ve been at this for over a year now, starting off at Blu Monkey in Hollywood and now at a new venue - Nola’s in DTLA. This Thursday, March 29 is the first LIFESWELL at that location.
Besides the day-to-day stuff I do for R&R, I also work with Backside - the boutique store out of Burbank and Echo Park in LA. A few months ago, Eric (co-owner of Backside) revealed plans to start up a publication called Eight x Ten Magazine. It was a marketing tool, a way to build a team out of talented Backside supporters, a quarterly effort to keep print alive. He asked me to be a part of it and write about fashion and streetwear, and I immediately obliged. I hadn’t written for print in years, and any chance I get to revisit it, I take. The first issue drops this Thursday.
LIFESWELL is hosting the official Eight x Ten Magazine launch party on Thursday and I couldn’t be anymore hyped. Two things I work for are coming together and I get to celebrate twice. Join me; I couldn’t be any more proud of both entities.

This time last year, LIFESWELL - the every last Thursday of the month get down at Blu Monkey - was introduced. The original goal for the event was to feature our talent collective by integrating them into a party platform. So for the first six months of 2011, the Rhythm Natives were available to accompany artists like Thurzday, KO The Legend, and KidFrost. By mid-year, we shifted focus on our DJs. So for the latter half of 2011, the residents accompanied guest DJs like Lady Sha, Spintelect, As-Is, and SoSuperSam.
Tonight, we will celebrate LIFESWELL’s One Year Anniversary. It’s been a whirlwind, a learning process, a guarantee that at the end of every month we’d be with our entire crew. Who knows what’s in store for us in the coming months. We just know that at least for one day, you gotta stop what you’re doing, head out to bar, dance, and celebrate that life is good. If you search on Google today, or research something on Wikipedia, you’ll notice these sites “blacked out”. These websites, along with many others, have come together in protest of SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act that is making its way to Congress. The US government has been facing increasing pressure from the entertainment industry to find some method of stopping online piracy that is allowing people to own copies of their material for free. That’s fair. Original content must be protected. But not in this manner.
In a nutshell, the US Attorney General can seek a court order that would force search engines, advertisers, payment processors, et al to stop having any contact with allegedly infringing websites. It will allow the studios, for example, to create a personal hit list of websites they feel are breaking their copyright policies. Going off a feeling can basically shut me down?
While American intellectual property deserves protection, that protection must be won and defended in a way that does not stifle innovation, and erode due process under the law. As a blogger, I’m at risk. My freedom of speech is essentially taken away. Under SOPA, I would fear censorship because one time or another I posted Nike’s logo, or a picture of Natalie Portman from Black Swan. SOPA is vague enough to accuse that as copyright infringement, and then boom, I’m finito. As an artist manager, I’m at risk. My artists have sampled songs, they’ve covered songs, and their work is on YouTube for the world to see. Under SOPA, YouTube could be on the blacklist and my artists and I could very well face legal problems from either the video site, the record label, or both.
The US congress is therefore fighting an open frontier of information, inspiration, thought, and expression. They are fighting innovation, and the future Peter Thiels and Mark Zuckerbergs to create the new status quo. The internet is what it is right now because something like SOPA (and its twisted way of doing things) did not exist prior. Internet governance has long been a topic of consideration. And guess what, it doesn’t work. SO STOP.
Before I end this, let me say that if you disagree with SOPA and feel that it could adversely affect you and your business, please take time to exercise civic duty and contact your representative HERE.
Now let me for real end this with a quote I read from Jim Jarmusch (who, ironically, is a film director). “Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: ‘It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to.’”
