The thing about Harry making it to the New Yearâs party is not that itâs a materially now or never situation. like sheâs not moving across the country or getting married or anything, as later romcoms tend to do. The ticking clock is only symbolic, because the party is purely symbolic in their relationship. He has to get to the party as fast as he can, before she leaves, because those parties were an important part of their friendship, and it would mean a lot to Sally. And because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible. Thatâs why it works.
Bunny being farsighted and Henry nearsighted, them having similar builds, Henry with dark hair he parted to the right, Bunny with light hair parted to the left, them having the same glasses framesâŚ
Camilla was essential to the Bacchanal, being the only woman in the Greek class.
Perhaps this is the very reason Julian allowed her to join them in the first placeâhe might have guessed they would need her one day. He was unlikely to have a female student without a reason.
If Julian was truly as devoted to his subject as he claimed, he should have known how the ancient Greeks regarded women: deprived of liberty, bound by domestic confinement, and excluded from most forms of civic life. The Maenads, the followers of Bacchus, were predominantly women. Many Greek rulers opposed the Bacchic cult precisely because it meant women were left unsupervised by men.
I also believe Henryâs urgency to hold the Bacchanal had little to do with the changing weather. They could easily have travelled to another state and performed it there, somewhere warmer. His haste, I think, was connected to Camillaâs menstrual cycleâshe likely needed to be as âcleanâ as possible to participate. As the only woman, she was the proper medium for Bacchus, or Dionysus. Without her, they would have failed.
I suspect Henry also knew that the farmer they killed was not a proper sacrifice, since it had not been done consciously. They needed another oneâthe kind the Maenads are often depicted tearing apart,
a rabbit.

Henry Winter is an insecure man just like Richard Papen.
i find it a little unfair when people blame Richard for being such an insecure validation seeking jerk whereas Henry too gives me the same vibe. The way he carries around an umbrella instead of a cane so that people don't know that he can't walk properly, or the way he hides his scar, or the way his suits are always proper, or the way he speaks multiple languages. It's not everyday that you see someone so prime and proper, thus it makes peoples opinion on Henry's character look like a facade to me. Henry too, wants attention and validation, it's just that he knows how to not look like an idiot wanting it.
Would it be crazy if I said that out of all The Secret History characters, Bunny & Camillaâs relationship intrigues me the most?
Like, say what you will about Bunny, heâs the only one in the Greek class that doesnât have any type of romantic interest in her. We know that Richard loves her, that Henry appears to as well, everything that happens between her and Charles, and even that her and Francis did something. And thatâs excluding the bacchanal.
And this is mentioned multiple times.
On page 457 & 458, Francis says, âBunny wouldnât go near Camilla, you know, he would hardly even look at her. He used to say that she wasnât his typeâŚâ
On page 226, he says, âYou couldnât pay me to sleep with you, girlie.â
But, really, even beyond that, these two have such an interesting dynamic that we never really see.
On page 39, itâs the two of them that say the whole âto liveâ & âto live foreverâ lines.
On page 57, he agrees that sheâs pretty, smart, and lovely. Actually, he compares her to Diana, and this part really gets me because come on, itâs Diana. The goddess whose symbols are deer, the moon, and hunting. But most of all, it really gets me because sheâs a virgin goddess.
On page 100, itâs said that he went with her to the emergency room.
On page 224, when discussing Bunnyâs misogyny, it says, âWith Camilla he was forced to assume a slightly more paterntalistic stance, beaming down at her with the condescension of an old papa toward a dimwit child.â
On page 268, right before they kill him, she says, âHi, Bun.â And he says, âHi yourself.â And this line just really kills me. Itâs silly, but itâs just so shocking to me how friendly they all seem right before everything.
On page 359, she mentions burying Bunny, and I know she says it in a way to imply that itâs just because she thinks itâs bad luck, but I always think about how sheâs the only one who cared if he had a proper burial.
On page 375, when they talk to the agents about Bunny, she cries, and she could just be faking to avoid suspicion but⌠I mean⌠it still gets me⌠I am nothing if not delusional.
But the part that most of all tempted me to rethink them is because of page 452, when she says, âHi, you.â And Richard says, âHi yourself.â Just like she and Bunny did. And then she says, âIn the closet thereâs a scarf [Bunny] left the last time he was here. I keep running across it. It still smells like him.â
They just fascinate me so much. Please tell me more about them. Please give Camilla one friend that doesnât sexualize her (as much as everyone else at least)⌠pleaseâŚ
Thinking about the bacchanal from Camilla's perspective. Camilla as the deer, chased for miles. Camilla with her hair dyed red with blood. Camilla and the fact they'd all had sex with her that day. Camilla and how she didn't speak for a long while after they found her. Camilla and how she was never asked what really happened to her.
