very amusing to me that zuko and katara's canon love interests, apart from their respective endgame pairings, tend to have similar traits to katara and zuko. see:
song is a healer, she is warm, compassionate, trusting, hopeful and optimistic, wears braids in her hair, and was hurt by the fire nation as a young child.
jin is warm and energetic, wears braids in her hair, and is associated with the element of water.
katara is a healer, she's warm and energetic and compassionate, hopeful, trusting, optimistic, was hurt by the fire nation as a young child, wears braids in her hair, and is associated with the element of water.
however, mai is more cold and pessimistic, closed-off and unemotional. not to say that growing up during a war isn't inherently traumatising, but katara and song in particular both harbour trauma with relation to the fire nation that they share with zuko, whereas mai is ambivalent about the war and seems more bored by it than anything.
then we have jet, who is tall and dark-haired, good at caring for younger children, with a penchant for vigilante justice, at times impulsive and aggressive, with somewhat questionable morals, and is a skilled swordsman.
haru is tall, dark-haired, thoughtful and idealistic, and family-oriented.
zuko is tall with dark hair, good at caring for younger children (see 'zuko alone'), has a penchant for vigilante justice, definitely impulsive and aggressive and isn't always on the right side of history, is a skilled swordsman who is thoughtful, idealistic, and family-oriented.
by contrast aang is short and bald, and younger than katara. he isn't often featured caring for younger children, since he's almost a child himself. he definitely has a vigilante streak but is usually presented as being on the 'right' side of things. i think aang can be impulsive and aggressive at times, though i don't think the narrative wants me to feel the way. he has no skills with swords and, while idealistic, i don't think he's always thoughtful towards katara. it's hard to say whether aang is family-oriented since he's the last surviving air nomad, but at least according to korra canon he wasn't the best dad and often played favourites with his kids.
all this to say, going off the qualities and types of people they are usually attracted to, katara and zuko are perfect partners for each other. this isn't to say that mai and aang are bad people, just that there might be better partners out there for them. anyway zutara soulmateism 2026
