What I think goes on my betta's mind

*Human walks by*

Betta: OMG! OMG! Human! Feed me! Feed me! Look how pretty my fins are! This deserves some extra food right? Right?

*human puts one finger on glass*

Betta: *gasps aggressively * how dare you put your filthy finger on my glass??! Begone demon! Begone!

I'm getting a betta soon (after my tank cycles) and this will be my first betta. I was wondering what you would recommend I keep on hand, like food and medicine. Also I was wondering what you do as far as a good feeding schedule? I'm sorry if you've answered this before, and if so, could you direct me to where you did? Thank you so much!

It’s exciting, getting a new fishy friend!

Some medicine that I recommend:

Aquarium Salt (any brand), is a good first medication, if water changes don’t seem to do the trick. It’s good for dips and baths, and is a good start when you’re unsure of what may be ailing your fish. Use it for external problems, such as fin-rot.

Seachem’s Kanaplex, is a broad spectrum antibiotic, that is easy on beneficial bacteria, but does wonders for most ailments, whether it’s fungal or bacterial.

Seachem’s Paraguard, is a malachite green-based anti-parasitic, and is particularly good for eradicating external parasites, bacterial lesions, and many types of fungi.

Seachem’s Stressguard, isn’t a medication, rather an antiseptic. It’s composite of ions that adhere to wounds, and effectively shields them (like a bandaid). This is an amazing product, especially when dealing with fin rot.

Seachem’s Metroplex is another broad spectrum antibiotic, but it’s particularly useful in eradicating protozoan infections, such as ich.

 Fritz Mardel’s Maracyn and Maracyn-two, are antibiotics. Used as a duo for gram+/- bacterial infections (I.e. if you have an extremely stubborn bacterial infection, that’s not responding to other treatments, use these)

Kordon’s Malachite Green, is a great external antiparasitic. It can also be used as a “swab” on affected areas of your fish. Also great for dips and baths!

As for feeding, I feed my betta Omega One: Betta Buffet Pellets, at a rate of 4 pellets per day. All my fish do well with this amount, but you may need to adjust this based on your fish’s needs (Make sure they’re not getting too much or too little.)

I also fast my betta every Thursday, and feed them garlic-soaked frozen bloodworms, twice weekly. :)

I totally forgot to take a picture when I was experiencing bacterial bloom but I planted some java fern and purple waffle. My local pet store was running low on drift wood and they only had some sad looking pieces so I might go to petsmart really soon. I’ve seen too many conflicting stories about bettas having [fish] tank mates and while I was looking forward to getting some harlequin rasboras, i’ll wait until i’m ready to upgrade my tank size. Nerite snails are stinking cute though, hmm i’ll update y’all.

Hello! I’m a soon to be fish mom. I have a cycled 10gallon tank but i’m still deciding what babies to get… Would 1 betta and 6 neon tetras be okay?

I’m not super well versed in community tanks. I don’t really have any interest in keeping them so unfortunately that also means I don’t reall know much about them :( I’m sorry. But what I can tell you is this. I would not recommend neon tetras with a betta. They can nip at the bettas fins and be an overall stressful experience :(

I’m not sure what kind of community can go in a 10 gallon, most community tanks I hear about tend to be 20 gallons or larger. But if someone knows more than I do please weigh in!

Okay, I’ll admit it.

I was one of those people who swore that fish were ‘easy pets’.

I bought an Aqueon 10 gallon starter kit and THEN did my research. After realizing that fish keeping was a huge ass responsibility, I didn’t back down and I decided that I was up for the challenge. But all this information is making me dizzy.

I started the fishless cycling using fish food a week ago but I think i’m just going to buy the API masterkit tomorrow and pick up where I left off...

After realizing that my little 10 gallon is far from ordeal for a goldfish.. I started reading about bettas and decided that i’d in fact love to have one. I’m super happy I didn’t get carried away with decorating before researching what bettas would prefer

Basically, before I buy my male betta which i’ve decided before hand to name “Triton” i’m going to get the following:

a nice chuck of driftwood

some java fern

freeze dried bloodworms

pellets (instead of the flakes I got with my tank)

I just need to know what else I should do before I get my Triton. I fear being a horrible mom and it gives me anxiety seeing all the mistakes people have made and i’d love to avoid them.

Flood me with advice.

Today I started the fishless tank cycling.. Haven’t finished decorating as yet, but I saw a gorgeous ‘sunken barrel’ fish home at Petsmart and i’m pretty sure you’ll see it in my next fishblr post.

I regret not getting black sand instead but I didn’t want my little brother to feel left out on my new journey so pink and purple it is !
