Long post about a certain scene from TADC but specifically why I think a certain interpretation of it is widely off course from whatâs actually intended/depicted please donât click read more unless you want to read spoilers.
I think it says a lot how hard people are going for âjax fantasies about sexually harassing/taking advantage of gangle!â When it doesnât even make sense in the context of what we are shown.
Prefacing with with the fact that Iâm not a jax Stan. I am at best indifferent to him as a character but I also dislike peopleâs reactions to this scene and specifically how people are acting as if itâs gooseworks intent to depict jax as a sexual predator because the people viewing the scene were uncomfortable with it in the context of jax bullying gangle over the course of the show.
First of all this is one in a series of scenes that if you take this one at face value you need to also take all of the others at face value. Meaning you need to believe he actually wants to strangle pomni and make Ragatha abstract. And not to mention the fact the zooble scene is contradictory to this one.
Not to mention the actual content of the scene which is more important.
Zooble has abstracted gangle is organising their funeral.
Gangle is wearing the spudsies mask. Iâve seen people say this is indicating he wants her to be manic and therefore vulnerable but I think people are forgetting this is the /one/ episode where gangle actually stands up to jax and punishes him for behaving like an asshole. That and jax isnât aware of what happened with the talk between pomni and gangle and the truck scene. All he knows is gangle wore the mask and grew a backbone. Thatâs jaxâs context for the mask.
Second of all jax is wearing the maid outfit. The maid outfit we are /specifically/ shown that he is embarrassed and angry at being forced to wear effectively by zooble. Even if he DID want to take advantage of gangle it makes no sense for him to put on the maid outfit and claim that itâs a way to honour zooble and their âweird gender stuffâ or whatever it is the subtitles have him say. He would literally have to be some master manipulator and extremely determined sexual predator to prioritise the possibility it would make gangle more susceptible than his own comfort.
How /i/ interpreted this scene and specifically the inclusion of the maid dress and jaxâs comment about zoobles gender was not him attempting to be manipulative. I interpreted instead as jax using âhonouringâ zooble no matter how flippantly to do something he otherwise would not feel comfortable admitting he enjoys in this case wearing the dress.
I felt the scene as a whole was more representative of the fact that jax actually /envies/ zooble and gangles dynamic he envies the fact that zooble despite their problems is confident being GNC and gangle likes being around them and that they may even be more than friends.because I also think that jaxâs bullying is his unhealthy and toxic attempt at âfriendshipâ after kaufmo and ribbit. I think he genuinely tells himself that gangle likes when heâs mean to her and the realisation that itâs just made her genuinely hate him isnât something he feels good about,the fact heâs not even getting a reaction anymore I think is when this clicks for him. Tied to the fact everythingâs ârealâ including his actions and the affect they have itâs not a game in all senses of the word.
We see how he reacts to actual friendship with ribbit with kaufmo and even with pomni. I think the way he treats gangle is ultimately an extension of that attitude that unfortunately snowballed because gangle is a lot meeker and has her own issues that are exhiberated from it. Hence why in this âfantasyâ sheâs wearing the mask from the one time she stood up to him and put him in his place.
Another important aspect is this is purely jaxâs imagination. Itâs not reflective of what would actually happen in that scenario or how gangle would actually feel. For context I can imagine flirting with someone an them being receptive,that doesnât mean Iâm fantasising about sexually harassing them because letâs say keanu reeves wouldnât actually be interested or comfortable with a random twenty something year old doing that. (Hypothetically).
I say this because the scene specifically ends with jax telling gangle to meet him later,but the choice is still ultimately with gangle to do that or not. Which I think if this scene was intended to depict sexual harassment would not be included.
I understand WHY people are uncomfortable with this scene. But for tall the above reasons I think itâs pretty obvious in my opinion that gooseworks intent when writing it was not for jax to be behaving sexually predatorily towards gangle. Or for it to be viewed as jax even genuinely wanting whatâs depicted to literally happen.
I think the fact that weâre told âreal worldâ jax goes onto be a regular at âreal worldâ zoobles bar and therefore in some way shape or form is /probably/ queer even if you donât interpret him as being trans in one way or another supports the above. I think the versions of the characters in the circus is them at their lowest and if jax had been intended as a sexually predatory person âreal worldâ jax would not have that as part of his ending.
I think this scene indicates multiple things such as
âą jax envies zooble and gangles relationship
âą jax envies zoobles gender non conformity
âą jax preferred gangle in the spudsies episode
âą jax believes if zooble abstracted he could take their place and dynamic with gangle (?)
âą jax has serious issues but their around his gender identity and his fear of close relationships not hinting at a sexually predatory side.
