The usual back and forth sort of wrestling for control that happened between them was absent tonight. The power dynamic was shifting as always, but it was a willing give and take rather than a struggle. No matter how much they might snap and pick at each other outside the walls of Travis’s room, inside of it they came together with an ease that had only increased over time. When he tugged at the hem of her shirt, Andy lifted her arms to help him remove it before she was pressed back into the bed, letting out a soft moan as Travis’s lips moved down her neck to the now exposed skin of her chest and stomach. After a long sip, she cleared her throat and set the glass aside again, deciding that distraction would be the best tactic for both of them. Stepping back over to Travis, she slid onto his lap, straddling his thighs and kissing him insistently. “I don’t wanna talk about it,” she murmured softly before kissing him again.

His comment was met with a snort of amusement, though under the surface Andy did worry that it would seem like that. She knew Travis hadn’t treated her any differently since they had started falling into bed together, but she did worry about people finding out about them and assuming things. Considering he was her superior officer, it would almost seem natural for people to assume she was in it for something more than just Travis himself, and she worried at times that Travis might even think that as well. Not that she’d ever mention that out loud. Once he finished and they’d swapped places, Andy tried to work quietly. For someone who had had to deal with most of life’s problems by herself throughout her childhood, it was strangely comforting just to have Travis’s company while she tried not to think too much. Of course he was too observant and annoying to let things go, which meant it didn’t take too long for him to prod at her. Andy frowned at the question, her hand pausing momentarily in her ministrations before she forced herself to move again. “There’s nothing to tell.” A complete and total lie, and Travis would likely know it, but for all that she actually trusted the man, for reasons beyond the possibility of getting thrown in the brig, she didn’t want Travis knowing about her past and her father. “Just some asshole trying to give me shit earlier,” she finally amended, finishing up with the last cut on his face and setting the supplies aside, directly meeting his eyes afterwards. “It’s nothing you need to worry about.”

When she mentioned there was nothing to tell, Travis felt like there was no way back and she wouldn’t say anything else, but he was very wrong, she mentioned a person giving her shit and that’s when a frown appeared on his face “Who’s this person, and why didn’t you tell me sooner so we can make sure they know who they are dealing with.” It wasn’t his business but they were a team, even when they fought, and he would fight anyone who would come against her. Travis looked at her “It’s a bit too late, I’m worried” he caressed her cheek with a concerned look on his face.

Thankful that he agreed without question or argument, Andy gave him a half smile, not even protesting her hand in his. Instead, she tightened her fingers around his and followed him to his room. Neither of them talked the whole way there, and thankfully they didn’t encounter anyone else. Who knew what someone might say or think seeing her and Travis this close? Once they got to his room, he left her to go get the drink and she stood awkwardly for a moment before he was handing her a large glass of rum and sitting her down. “You trying to take advantage of me, Reynolds?” she teased lightly, arching a brow as she took in the amount of alcohol in the glass. Not that he ever would, but it was habit to poke at him. Andy did her best to sit quietly as he cleaned her up, only wincing occasionally as he hit more tender cuts on her face. None of it hurt too much though, so she never complained, just made faces and took long sips from her glass in between, clear up until he was done. “Thanks. Your turn.” It was the only other thing she’d said in that time, but once Travis was done she made him switch her positions and she took over cleaning him up, taking care to be gentle around the worst spots. She only met his gaze a couple of times before setting her jaw and keeping her eyes glued to what she was doing. It was too easy to get caught up in his gaze and she really didn’t want to start spilling her guts just because he was looking at her like that.

Travis laughed and shook his hand “I don’t think I could even if I tried, which I would never. I think most of the time is really the other way around” He smirked and took a long sip of his glass of rum “See now we are even.” Travis wasn’t this tender when they were curing their wounds of their fights, but today was just very different from all the other times, it felt that way. He smiled and sat down when she took the lead to clean up his, he knew he was probably staring at her a bit too much but he was just trying to figure out what was going on with her “You are dodging me are you going to tell me why, or will I have to get you drunk to tell me about it?”

She shrugged her shoulders with a grimace, indicating it was no big deal. It would have been smarter to just pull out and forfeit her entrance fee and bet money… but here she was having lost both of those and banged up. Andy probably would be able to take the guy the next time - especially since she wouldn’t forget the injuries he’d bestowed on her tonight. He was owed more than a few back, plus interest. Travis’s eyes narrowed and seemed to study her, causing Andy to drop her own eyes under the pretense of checking her forearm. It was unsettling how easily Travis seemed to see through her, but thankfully he didn’t ask any deep questions. Alcohol was tempting, but she didn’t want to be in a crowd anymore, so she half shook her head in answer. “Only if we’re taking it back to your room. I don’t want to be around anyone tonight,” she replied, finally raising her gaze back to meet his, hopeful that he wouldn’t want to be around anyone else tonight either.

Travis knew something was up, she was not her usual self, and he got a little worried about what could be making her this way, where she even seemed a bit sad. He nodded right away, letting his hand take hers and guide her out of there briefly and secretly “Let’s go, I got enough alcohol over there already.” Their walk back to his room was a little quieter, making him even more aware of her unusual behavior, so the moment they came to his room, but all his focus on her, he served her a big glass or what was her go-to drink, make her sat down and started to gently clean up her wounds “Let me know if it hurts too much and I will stop, okay?”

Andy was pretty damned good at fighting, even when she was up against guys much bigger than her - or at least, she was usually pretty damned good. It took a lot to throw her concentration during a fight, but that night she hadn’t gone in with a whole lot to begin with. Maybe she should have pulled out for the night, but she’d already put her name and her bet in earlier that week and she wasn’t about to back down. That turned out to be a mistake, as the guy she’d gone up against had used that exact lack of concentration to soundly beat her ass. It left her in a more sour mood than she’d been in before, but when her eyes landed on Travis off to the side, she didn’t even hesitate before heading his way. “Nice job earlier,” she complimented, nodding toward the growing bruise on his shoulder. “How bad does that one hurt?” It was a far cry from the way she’d usually start a conversation, but it was also in a more comfortable realm than hey, so one of our coworkers knows about my father and threatened to rat me out to the captain and get me tossed in the brig.

Travis felt a lot lighter after two good fights, he would probably regret the last one all week, but right now all the things that had been bothering him were a little quieter for now, and that was the real reason for tonight’s fight. He could see Andy at the ring, and even if he wasn’t really enjoying the view of her getting her ass kicked or even losing money, he had to suck it up and figure out, he could bet against that guy next week and payback but without letting anyone know that he had a few revenge motives. “Thanks, sorry about your fight, but I’m sure you can take him out next time.” Phillip looked at her with a bit of suspicious, she was never that nice, she usually just went on about how bad he looked “As bad as it looks, I was lucky to win that last fight, but that means more money and means, I can spend on alcohol, so wanna join me?”

She rolled her eyes again, but the small smile that curled up her lips mimicked his. It seemed like no matter what she said, he was going to be stuck in this dark place for a little while, and the odds were that he wouldn’t be able to pull himself out until he and his brother talked things through. At least, that was Andy’s best guess to how it had to go. Once he agreed with her, Andy started to smile a little wider, but the end of his sentence stopped that in its tracks, her brow furrowing instead as she automatically and immediately snapped back, “Did better than you could have done.” Was it true? No. She agreed that she could have done better, but it would have gone outside the regulations and possibly gotten her in trouble. Travis had the luxury of being a higher rank, which meant he’d be more likely to get away with pulling something like that off. “Whatever. Let’s go. First round is on you now though.”

He couldn’t help but smirk, he knew just how annoyed she was by his comment, but it was something he always did to her, to push her to be better just to show him how wrong he was when he made comments like that. Travis rolled his eyes, let her walk first “Alright, but just because you gave me some of your personal stash.”

“You can tell me all you want. Doesn’t mean I’ll believe it.” Andy shrugged her shoulders, well aware she was being nicer than she usually was; even when they were in the fight club. Chances were, with everything Travis was already going through, he wouldn’t take much notice, or he would just brush it off as her being nice to him out of pity. “Just because he hates you, or says he does, doesn’t automatically mean you fucked up in any way. My guess is he had nowhere else to direct his grief, so he aimed it at you.” Really, she was just fishing for ideas. Andy was the last person who could say anything about how family worked. Her own father had been nothing more than indifferent toward her and she had no siblings to speak of. While she was glad to have pulled even a small smile out of him, she made a show of rolling her eyes and scoffing. “Yeah, well. Don’t let it go to your head or anything. You’re still an annoying pain in the ass.” Trying to say anything more would probably be talking in circles, because it didn’t seem like Travis wanted to get much deeper, and he wasn’t yet willing to realize he probably wasn’t to blame for any of the things his brother had said, so after another moment, Andy slid off her desk and checked the clock on the wall. “I know you can knock off whenever you want, but if you’re willing to let me out a few minutes early, we could go get shit faced at the bar.”

“I think your number one hobby is to contradict me, so I wouldn’t wait for this to be any different.” He shook his head but smirked. Even when he knew she could be right, he also knew that the way he left was not good, he could have at least talk to them before leaving but he didn’t give that much explanation he just escape from everything without a look behind to what he left “I do deserve a hard time.” He sights and shrugged “I was an asshole, so maybe you are right when you say it.” Travis couldn’t help to snort, at her comment and stood up “Let’s go I need to drink my weight in bourbon. Not to mention you already did your job there, you could have done it better if you ask me, but it’s not bad.”

Andy’s features creased into frown at his words. She could believe that he had issues the same as she did, but she couldn’t believe that he wouldn’t be that important to his family. Otherwise his brother wouldn’t have as big of an issue with him being here, right? “Hey.” In a move that was more affectionate than she got with most people, Andy stretched out her leg and nudged Travis’s knee with her foot, moving it back and forth til he looked up at her. “Believe me when I say that most people would miss your presence alone, just because of how… noticeable you are. I can almost guarantee that lots of people, especially your family, miss you. Probably a lot. Would your brother have been so angry with you if he didn’t still care? I mean, I don’t know for sure. I don’t have any siblings. Or any family, really. Not that counts. But from what I hear from other people, it doesn’t add up.” She nudged his knee again. “You’re a good man, Travis. If you joining up with the Alliance is somehow the cause of your brother’s death, it’s still not on you, because I know you wouldn’t have joined if you knew that would be an outcome.”

He snorted “They were better off without me, I can tell you that much.” He shook his head “It’s not important anymore if they missed me or not, the one I have near hates me, so one way or another I fucked it enough to deserve that hate.” He couldn’t help to smile a little at her foot nudging his knee “I think that’s the nicest thing you have told me since we have met.”

His words and his hesitation made Andy think that he was going to turn down her offer. If that was the case, she wouldn’t press him, but after the blowup he’d had, she figured he really needed to at least have it out with someone. Even though she’d offered, since she’d expected him to close up and walk out, she was surprised when Travis did take a seat in her chair. He wouldn’t look at her, but Andy sat quietly while he spoke, letting his words sink in. “I get what you’re saying. That’s the same reason I joined - though mostly for the escape, less the money.” It was probably the most she’d ever shared about her past and how she’d ended up in the Alliance. “But as you said, you didn’t pull the trigger. I can sort of get why you feel guilty - family has that insane hold on you that you can never quite be free of…” Her voice came out slightly bitter, thoughts of her father darkening her mood for a moment before she shook him from her mind. Resituating herself on the desk, Andy shifted her legs and reached down between her knees to open one of the desk drawers, pulling out a small flask of rum. Maybe not the best idea to show off her stash to her commanding officer, but if anyone needed a drink, it was Travis right then. Holding the flask out to him, she offered a small, sympathetic look as well. “I’m sorry to hear about your brother though. I can only imagine how hard that was to hear. Were you guys close?”

Travis snorted “I guess money and getting away from my mess was the main problem of all the shit I feel now” He wasn’t even trying to lie to her, he wasn’t sure why he had this natural need to get anything of this out of his chest if he had buried any talk about his family or his pasts deep inside. But since he was doing it, he wouldn’t do it with anyone else, Andy and he could argue all the time but they had an unspoken pact about not keeping their secrets. All of them, so why this talk should be any different. If she was expecting any surprise about her little stash, he was not going to mention, it would see hypocrite since he also had one on his desk. He grabs the drink and took it all in one sip. “I thought so, but I guess once I left that stopped. We are a big family, so even if I’m sure people would go all nice and said I would be missed, but there are enough siblings for me not to be missed that bad.”

It was easy to tell that he didn’t want to look her in the eyes, but Andy was nothing if not stubborn. She had figured that maybe he’d somehow gotten in trouble with his command, or something had gone wrong with a friend, but what he said wasn’t anything she was prepared for. While everyone in the Alliance might not know their crewmates personally, they all at least knew who was on board, which meant… Andy sucked in a breath of understanding before letting it out in a soft, “Oh.” It was a lot, and the pain in Travis’s voice made it evident that it was more than a lot for him. They hadn’t ever really talked about their families; the most conversation about them revolving around where they’d learned to fiddle with electronics and engines and everything in between, but this news made her wonder just how many similarities might exist between the two. Maybe that’s why they couldn’t get along. “That’s a lot to unpack. Do you– do you want to talk about it?” It would be easier to slip back into fighting, even if it was for show. To try and wipe away his pain and worries temporarily with angry sex, even. But even someone as callous as Andy knew that wasn’t what Travis needed at that moment. Hell, even for her it was a struggle to keep from wrapping her arms around him and hugging him. Which- where the hell did that urge come from? Moving away from Travis, she settled herself on the edge of her desk before nudging her chair out with a foot, gesturing toward it in case he actually wanted to talk to her.

He wasn’t sure why he was opening up with her, perhaps it was that he needed it to get out of his system, or maybe it was that he knew that gossiping it was not something Andy did, so anything he would tell her, wouldn’t leave the room, he wasn’t sure what her reactions would be, but at least he could trust her on not saying anything to anyone. Travis shrugged “I don’t know what to talk about it.” He sat down looking down quiet for a moment but after a sighed he talked again “You know I never join because I believed in any of that moral shit, for me it was just kind of a good escape with a payment, but that whole shit behind the war it never really moved me, I know I didn’t pull the trigger and yet here I am feeling as guilty as I did.”

The words were no different than what she’d encountered from Travis before, but the action… The slamming of his hand against the desk was enough to make the entire communicator jump - and Andy as well, her body jolting backwards in surprise. “Jesus!” This time her eyes stayed wide instead of reverting to a sarcastic glare, following Travis’s movements as he looked from his hand to her and back down. While the apology was unexpected as well, it wasn’t what she was focused on. The sigh she let out echoed his as she moved to the door of her office, shutting it softly to keep anyone else from wondering in. Normally this was a side of her that few people saw, let alone Travis, but as she turned back to him, Andy took his hand in hers to make sure he hadn’t injured himself too badly. After a moment, she turned her eyes back up to his. “Don’t apologize. We’re both at fault, because yes. I am insufferable.” Dropping his hand from hers, she cocked her head to the side before cupping his chin and forcing him to look up. “While arguing certainly isn’t out of the norm for us, that sure as hell was. What’s gotten into you, Travis?”

Travis knew he had fucked up, he shouldn’t have reacted the way he did, even when they were always discussing his gesture was beyond anything, they had said to each other in the past and he knew that because he had never made her jumped the way she did. He was ready for her to leave and tell him to fuck up and get out, but instead, she holds his hand, it was the odd hat he felt relieved and less angry, but his sorrow was still there. He couldn’t look at her yet, but she forced him and he had to “I just found out that my brother is on the ship, and it wasn’t really a happy reunion, in fact, it was the worst reunion ever, cause the guy hates me with all guts and gave me the news that we lost our older brother, to make it even better he blames me for it.” scared away men after we are married I think we are good, cause I don’t want to be known as the guy his fake wife cheats on”

The snap back actually managed to take Andy by surprise, her eyes widening in a mixture of that surprise, coupled with confusion. Usually it took a little longer before Travis would be snapping at her in return, and all she’d done so far was ask him what he needed. The whole feeling of the situation threw her off balance for a moment, but by the time Travis was walking over to look at the communicator, she had stood up from her seat, her arms crossed over her chest. It didn’t do much beyond put some distance between them and make sure he had at least a little less of a height advantage. “Noted, Sir.” This time her voice came out with an edge of cold anger, but there was no tone he could accuse her of. Andy stood quietly for a few moments while Travis seemed to glare at the device in question, but the air felt so charged that it was practically making her itch. “Is there something you needed from me? Or did you just come in to see what you could find to criticize? If not, I’d like to get back to work.”

Travis had patience, he usually did, but not today, today he was a time bomb ready to explode, and sadly he had come to the person that pushed him to the limits quicker than anyone on the ship. He was ready trying to control himself to think of something else, but he wasn’t in his right state of mind, he was beyond this galaxy and his patience was as lost their ship. Travis snapped “Why do you have to be so fucking insufferable” with that he hit his hand hard to the table right next to the communicator. It was the first time he had been this way around a woman and the pain in his hand and looked at Andy, he was still annoyed but he knew that what he had done was wrong. He sighed and look down “I’m sorry. That was… bad”

It was probably the first time in awhile that the item in front of Andy - a communicator - was going to be fixed in a way that both she and Chief Reynolds agreed on. Granted, there were a few tweaks that she would have made while she had it cracked open, but they didn’t follow “proper regulations”, so she would follow the rules and keep them out. The innards of the machine were still out of the casing, but she’d reconnected the battery and had just started testing all the functions when she heard a knock at the door. “Yeah?” she answered, without looking up from the device. It wasn’t until the door was open and the person stood there for a moment in silence that Andy finally pulled her attention away from the communicator long enough to glance up, her brow automatically furrowing when she saw Chief Reynolds himself standing there. She couldn’t help it - the man was infuriating. Everyone else on the crew spoke about how easy going the chief was, how easy he was to get along with. Apparently that didn’t translate to dealing with Andy, because it seemed like all they ever did was argue with each other. Well… Andy argued with him, and he tended to snap back. She was generally the instigator. “What can I do for you, sir?” she finally spoke up, arching one brow with the final word.

Andy was the best mechanic he has met, to be fair he had asked for her to stick around even with her problem of following rules and lead, but he would never admit or even say anything to her about it, because even when he respected her, she was a pain in the ass and she would make his choice annoying somehow. Today something was very off with him, he wasn’t the same Travis he always was, he find out he lost a brother and another one not only hated him but also blame him for the death of his sibling, he felt like the world just kick him in the balls and somehow, he had been pushed for it and he was hurt, annoyed, and ready to scream. And it was that simple tone she used to mock him the one that did it for him “Use that fucking tone with me one more time Wulfhart, and I will make sure you regret it.” He walked to look at the communicator she was working on it. No he wasn’t himself, even when they did fought a lot, he knew for sure this was never the way, but he was tired of everything, of everyone and if she wanted to act this way he could too.
