Iconic Australian spinner Nathan Lyon achieved the significant milestone of 500 wickets in Test cricket during the first Test between Australia and Pakistan in Perth on Sunday. Lyon became the eighth bowler to reach this elite feat, joining the distinguished company of legendary players in the long-format cricket. During the match, Lyon claimed his 500th wicket by dismissing Faheem Ashraf leg-before-wicket for a mere five runs while Australia defended a target of 450. This accomplishment places Lyon alongside his compatriots, the late spin maestro Shane Warne and pace legend Glenn McGrath, who have also achieved the milestone of 500 Test wickets. Australia emerged victorious in the match by 360 runs, and Lyon concluded with combined bowling figures of 5/80 across both innings. Now, in 123 Tests, Lyon has taken 501 wickets at an average of 30.85 and a strike rate of 63.10. His best bowling figures are 8/50. He has 23 five-wicket hauls and four ten-wicket hauls in the longer format. He is the eighth-highest wicket-taker in the game.Lyon is a fourth-most successful spinner of all time in Tests and the third-most successful Aussie bowler in whites. As cricket celebrates Lyon's beautiful journey from a pitch curator to the eighth entrant to the '500 Club' within a span of 12 years, let us look at other members of this club:Muttiah MuralitharanIn 133 Tests, Muralitharan has taken 800 wickets at an average of 22.72 and a strike rate of 55.04. His best bowling figures are 9/51 in white clothing. With 67 fifers and 22 ten-wicket hauls, Murali is the most successful Test bowler ever.Shane WarneIn second place in Aussie spin wizard Shane Warne, who played 145 Tests for the Aussies. In these matches, he took 708 wickets at an average of 25.41 and a strike rate of 57.49. His best bowling figures are 8/71. He has 37 five-wicket hauls and 10 ten-wicket hauls. Warne is the most successful Australian bowler ever.James AndersonEngland's ageless wonder is in third place, with 690 wickets across 183 Tests at an average of 26.42 and a strike rate of 56.83. His best bowling figures are 7/42. He has taken 32 five-wicket hauls and three ten-wicket hauls in Tests. Anderson is not only England's most successful bowler, but also the most successful pacer in the history of the game, still going strong at 41 years of age.Anil KumbleNicknamed as 'Jumbo', Kumble lives upto this name with some really gigantic figures and records in Test and international cricket. With 619 wickets in 132 matches at an average of 29.65, he is India's best bowler ever statistically. His best figures are 10/74 and is the first-ever Indian to get a ten-wicket haul in a single Test inning. Attached to Kumble's name are 35 five-wicket hauls and eight ten-wicket hauls.Stuart BroadStuart Broad is the second-most successful pacer in sport's history, with the first being his partner-in-pace, James Anderson. In 167 Tests, Broad has taken 604 wickets at an average of 27.68. His best bowling figures are 8/15. He has 20 five-wicket hauls and three ten-wicket hauls in Tests.Glenn McGrathThe 'Pidgeon' as he is known to the fans, McGrath is the most successful Australian pacer ever and the equivalent of Shane Warne in fast bowling. In 124 matches, he took 563 wickets at an average of 21.64 and a strike rate of 51.95. His best bowling figures are 8/24. With 29 five-wicket hauls and three ten-wicket hauls, McGrath terrified batters worldwide for years.Courtney WalshThe West Indies pacer was the first-ever bowler to take 500 Test wickets. In 132 Tests, he took 519 wickets at an average of 24.44 and a strike rate of 57.84. His best bowling figures are 7/37. He took 22 five-wicket hauls and three ten-wicket hauls in Tests.(Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.)Topics mentioned in this article

Not long after he launched a scathing attack at David Warner, Mitchell Johnson fired another salvo at the Australia opener despite his century in the first Test agaisnt Pakitan at Perth. Johnson, who earlier said that Warner 'doesn't warrant a hero's sendoff', feels things could've gone either way for Warner who recieved a lifeline ealry in the first innings, before going on to make a 164.Warner did go on to register a huge first inning score but was dismissed for a duck in the second innings. Johnson made sure he highlighted the fact as he targeted his former opener again."On day one of the first Test against Pakistan Warner rode his luck early on - and it could have gone either way - and you take that and he went on to make 164," Johnson wrote for the West Australian."He did what he was paid to do in the first innings before Saturday's duck in the second innings," Johnson said on Day 3 of the Test match. The former Australia pacer remains of the opinion that his criticism of Warner in the earlier column was right."I think my opinion in this column a couple of weeks ago is still valid. He hadn't scored runs in about three years apart from the double century last summer.""Another point made was that a soft summer like this, with Australia expected to comfortably beat Pakistan and the West Indies, was the perfect time to look at blooding some new players into an ageing team."They could have given some new guys some really good time out in the middle this summer and backed them in. That's going to be much harder across the next two summers when India and England visit for five-Test series. It seems they've got their own plans in place for selection and how they see things. But they are going to be confronted by a changing of the guard at some point soon," he added.Johnson also highlighted how Warner could've been dismissed early in the innings. Warner didn't publicly react to Johnson's criticism before the start of the Perth Test but let his bat do the talking. Johnson did highlight how his words might have spurred the left-handed batter to better his game and deliver, with the spotlight on him."Warner may have denied he cares about criticism of his form, but it definitely does drive him as shown in his performance in the first innings," Johnson wrote."That sort of atmosphere is something Warner revels in," he further added.Topics mentioned in this article

I learnt about the altitude only after a few overs when I was running out of breath. Had to build on from there. (Last year to here) Personally, it feels good because when you play you have a dream to play for the country. I am enjoying my role and want to thank Rahul bhai as well. He said I should come back strongly and aim for a five-for. (how does this set you up for the next 2 games?) It is about enjoying the game. When we go to Gqeberha, we need to know what will work there and look for a good result there too," Arshdeep said at the post-match presentation.Winning the toss on what appeared to be a helpful surface for the bowlers, the Proteas skipper Aiden Markram opted to bat first. However, the decision came back to haunt the hosts as the Indians, led by pacemen Arshdeep and Avesh Khan reigned terror on them.Only De Zorzi (28 in 22 balls, with two fours and two sixes) and Phehlukwayo (33 in 49 balls, with three fours and two sixes) could come up with decent scores as the South Africans were bundled out inside 28 overs.Arshdeep (5/37) and Avesh (4/27) were the pick of the bowlers for India as they combined to claim nine South African scalps. Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav claimed the final wicket to fall.Chasing 117 to open the series on a winning note, India lost Ruturaj Gaikwad (5) early. However, fifties from debutant Sai Sudarshan (55 in 43 balls, with nine fours) and Shreyas Iyer (52 in 45 balls, with six fours and a six) saw India canter to a win with more than 33 overs to spare.Wiaan Mulder and Andile Phehlukwayo claimed the two Indian wickets to fall.(Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.)Topics mentioned in this article

Josh Hazelwood's Indian Premier League (IPL) career has been marred by injuries. He missed out on a large part of the 2023 season with the Royal Challengers Bangalore due to an injury. This led to the team releasing Hazelwood ahead of the upcoming auction. In 2024, Hazelwood has a chance to make things right and finally showcase his class on the IPL stage. Franchises will want to pick up the tall pacer as he was a part of the 2023 ODI World Cup-winning Australian team. However, the pacer has a baby on the way and this can influence how teams bid for the Australian bowler.Consistent performerHazelwood made his international debut as a promising teenager. He was the third 19-year-old to feature in an Australian ODI side. He picked up a wicket in his debut match but had to wait another three years to play for the national side again. In 2015, he picked up his first fifer against South Africa at Perth. He then followed it up with another match-winning three-wicket haul at Canberra. There was no looking back for him after that.Hazelwood has played 85 ODI matches for Australia and picked up 132 wickets. He was also the top-ranked bowler in ODIs in 2016. He missed out on the 2019 ODI World Cup, but he was a part of the 2015 and 2023 World Cup-winning Australian sides.T20I recordJosh Hazelwood has had a long T20I career spanning 10 years so far. He made his T20I debut for Australia in 2013 against the West Indies. After sweeping the ODI series, Australia lost the lone T20I by 27 runs. Hazelwood had an average outing, picking up a wicket but going for 36 runs in his four overs. A couple of matches later, he hit his stride and picked up four wickets against England to set up an eight-wicket victory for his side. He was adjudged as the man of the match for his effort. He became a T20I regular for the side in 2021. Since then he has played 32 matches for Australia and picked up 49 wickets. His bowling average of 17.34 is also impressive.Delayed IPL debutJosh Hazelwood was picked up by the Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2014 edition of the IPL. However, he didn't feature in their playing eleven. He was more of a backup in case of injuries. They retained him for the 2015 edition where he might have had more of a role to play, but Hazelwood opted out of IPL that season due to an increase in his international workload. Thus, Hazelwood had to wait till 2020 to make his IPL debut. He played three matches for the Chennai Super Kings that season and bowled a combined 10 overs. The following season saw him get more game time and improve his record. But it wasn't until the Royal Challengers Bangalore took him on board in 2022 that he began to influence the league.RCB bought Hazelwood for Rs 7.75 crore and he played 12 matches for the team in IPL 15. He was a regular in the side, and he repaid the team's faith by picking up 20 wickets at an average of 18.85. Just when he was ready to do it all again for his side, he injured his Achilles tendon and missed the first part of the 2023 season. He played just three matches for RCB in IPL 16 and picked up three wickets at an average of 25.33.Teams that could bid for Josh HazelwoodMumbai Indians are lacking in the pace department after releasing several big names like Jhye Richardson, Jofra Archer, and Chris Jordan. They could target Josh Hazelwood as Jasprit Bumrah's partner with the new ball. Hazelwood's height makes him a different kind of bowler to Bumrah, giving the Mumbai Indians' pace attack some variation.Gujarat Titans have a huge purse to work with. They will want to add a genuine pacer to accompany Mohammed Shami in their attack. Mohit Sharma has performed well, but he lacks the pace to hurry batters. If it comes down to a bidding war, Gujarat could outbid everyone.Royal Challengers Bangalore released Hazelwood stating his unavailability in the first part of the season. But this could be a part of their strategy to get him back in the auction at a cheaper price. Hazelwood has performed well for the team in the past, and they would be more than keen to have him in the team again.(This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.)Topics mentioned in this article
Wanindu Hasaranga’s exclusion from the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s retained players list raised quite a few eyebrows. RCB went all-out for the Sri Lankan all-rounder in the 2022 IPL Auction, shelling out INR 10.75 Crore. He was the team’s primary spinner. Now that Hasaranga is in the auction pool, several teams could bid for his services. Hasaranga’s ability to bat in the middle-order, along with his lethal variations in bowling, makes him a deadly T20 player. He can hit the ball long when required, giving his team flexibility in picking an additional specialist player to cover their weaknesses. Immediate Impact Wanindu […]
Wanindu Hasaranga's exclusion from the Royal Challengers Bangalore's retained players list raised quite a few eyebrows. Hasaranga's ability to bat in the middle-order, along with his lethal variations in bowling, makes him a deadly T20 player. He can hit the ball long when required, giving his team flexibility in picking an additional specialist player to cover their weaknesses.Immediate ImpactWanindu Hasaranga had shown promise from a young age. He was a part of the 2016 Sri Lanka Under-19 World Cup squad, where he took 7 wickets. He was particularly impressive in the match against England, picking up 3 wickets for 34 runs to restrict the opposition to 184.In the initial days of his career, he was known more for his batting than his bowling. He was a capable middle-order batsman who could score quickly. Playing for Colombo Cricket Club in 2017, he scored 586 runs in the Premier League Tournament. As he started working on his bowling, he became known as a prominent all-rounder. It became impossible for the selectors to ignore him after that.He made his international debut against Zimbabwe in 2017 and became the third debutant in ODI history to pick up a hat-trick.The RCB associationHasaranga couldn't find any takers in his first IPL auction in 2021. But he was brought into the Royal Challengers Bangalore as a replacement for the injured Adam Zampa. He played just 2 matches in the season and didn't pick up any wickets. RCB, though, had a long-term plan in mind for Hasaranga. In the subsequent season, he played 16 matches for RCB as they reached the Playoffs and fell just one step short of making the final. Hasaranga claimed 26 wickets in the season at an average of 16.54. He also added his first five-wicket-haul to his name.He missed the first part of the 2023 season as Sri Lanka were touring New Zealand at the time. On returning to the side, he didn't make a big impression. In 8 matches, he took just 9 wickets at an average of 28.67. Perhaps RCB found it hard to justify his high price tag after this performance and released him ahead of the Mini Auction.Teams that could target Wanindu HasarangaSunrisers Hyderabad have two Indian spinners in Mayank Markande and Washington Sundar. But their spin attack is still nowhere as deadly as their pace attack. Hasaranga's addition could elevate the overall quality of the bowling attack and make it among the most lethal in the tournament. They have Rs 34 crore to work with, so they can go big on Hasaranga.Delhi Capitals' spin department has arguably two of the strongest left-arm spinners in the game - Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel. The addition of a right-arm leg-spinner will add another dimension to their attack. Hasaranga's ability to push the ball through can also be handy at the team's home ground - the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The Delhi Capitals have a purse of Rs 28.95 at their disposal. They can gamble on Hasaranga if they believe he is the missing piece in their attack. The Punjab Kings have gone for youth over experience in their retentions ahead of the 2024 mini-auction. They have Rahul Chahar as a wrist spin option. But he doesn't have the mystery of Hasaranga. Their backup option, Liam Livingstone, could have a bad day since he is not a regular spinner. They will need experience in their spin department, particularly when visiting stadiums where the track offers turn. Punjab Kings have Rs 29.1 crore in their kitty and space for two more overseas players in their squad.Topics mentioned in this article

"Tough one (the loss). We would have liked to put on a really good score batting first. Credit to their bowling attack with the lateral movement. We were not even allowed to settle and build a partnership. The problem was right from the start and could not pull things back. (Misread the pitch?) We expected it to go around a little bit. Generally in the day games it does do something for 5-7 overs, we have seen that before. But today it went along for longer and we couldn't get in and build partnerships," said Markram in the post-match presentation."I think it comes down to individuals (on aggressive batting) When you are out there you have to assess yourself and communicate with the partner. We encourage guys to be positive but also choose smart options. We will have to assess. (Would you bat first again?) Probably not [laughs]," he added.Coming to the match, Proteas opted to bat first. But Indian pacers Arshdeep and Avesh Khan proved that decision to be fatal for Proteas. Only De Zorzi (28 in 22 balls, with two fours and two sixes) and Phehlukwayo (33 in 49 balls, with three fours and two sixes) could contribute something decent as SA was bundled out for 116 in 27.3 overs.Arshdeep (5/37) and Avesh (4/27) were the top bowlers for India. Shardul Thakur will be popular among franchises when the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction comes around. He has proven his ability to win titles for his side in the IPL and the international arena. He is also a handy lower-order batsman. Kolkata Knight Riders released the Mumbai-based pacer as a part of the team's restructuring plan for IPL 17. This could be good news for the remaining teams since most are looking for good fast-bowling options.Thakur's rise in the IPL has been slow but steady. Currently, he is 30th on the list of the league's all-time best bowlers with 89 wickets to his name.Initial disappointmentPunjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) bought Shardul Thakur as a promising youngster from Mumbai in 2014. Thakur's hopes were high, but he wasn't able to make it to the playing XI in the first season. His form in the domestic circuit continued to improve. He peaked during the 2015 Ranji Trophy season, where he picked up 41 wickets and emerged as Mumbai's most successful bowler. He picked up 3 wickets in the first innings and then bowled the spell of his life to take 5 wickets in just 13 overs. The team won the Ranji Trophy that season, and Thakur was earmarked for bigger things. Even this success did little to further Thakur's chances of becoming a regular in the IPL. He played just one match and didn't even get to finish his quota of 4 overs. After emerging as Mumbai's best bowler again the next season and still being ignored by the Punjab franchise, Thakur took to X (then Twitter) to express his disappointment. The following season, he was released by the franchise. This was the best thing that could happen to his career. In 2017, the Rising Pune Supergiant secured his services, and he played 12 of the team's 16 matches.Thakur's performance at his home ground of Mumbai in the first Qualifier caught everyone's eye. He picked up 3 wickets to send a strong Mumbai Indians team packing. Since then, he has played every season of the IPL. He came into his own under MS Dhoni's leadership and had his most successful season in 2021, where he had 21 wickets to his name. Chennai Super Kings went on to win the trophy that season.All-round optionHe was subsequently sold to the Delhi Capitals for Rs 10.75 Crore in the 2022 season. He claimed 15 wickets in the season, but the team failed to impress and finished at the bottom half of the table. Thakur was released and was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders.During this time, Thakur's batting also came into focus. Playing at the team's home ground of Eden Gardens, Thakur came in when the team was reeling at 89/5 and played a blinder. He scored 68 of 29 balls, his first and only half-century in the IPL. However, his bowling suffered during this time as he could pick up just 7 wickets in the 11 matches he played.ODI World Cup 2023 stintThakur's loss of form in the IPL also coincided with his loss of form in international cricket. He was a part of the Indian team's ODI World Cup squad, however, he was dropped from the side in favour of Mohammed Shami. He didn't get to finish his quota of 10 overs in a single match he played. The Mumbai player has hit a rough patch as he comes into this auction. But his all-round services will still be highly regarded. He is still among the top Indian pacers in the current set-up. His uncanny ability to pick up wickets when the team needs sets him apart.Teams that could bid for Shardul ThakurChennai Super Kings have Deepak Chahar and Tushar Deshpande to take up opening bowler duties. However, neither of them is as experienced as Shardul Thakur. The all-rounder has also had the most successful stint of his career with CSK. They won the 2018 and 2021 championships together.Mumbai Indians might also go for the local boy during the auction. They have an excellent Indian bowling option in Jasprit Bumrah, however, they may not want to play Arjun Tendulkar in all the matches. Shardul Thakur will make a good option if they can get him at a bargain price.Delhi Capitals are also looking to restructure their side ahead of IPL 17. They have a senior bowler in Ishant Sharma. Thakur could split the responsibility of being the team's experienced pacer with Ishant Sharma and give the team a better balance.Topics mentioned in this article

Australia's World Cup-winning skipper, Pat Cummins, will be in great demand at the IPL 2024 auction. Pat Cummins has a rich history with the league. He has played a lot of his cricket with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and has also had a successful season with the Delhi Capitals. He was released by KKR ahead of the auction, however, they will still be interested in adding him back to the team if they get a chance. However, the competition will be fierce. Cummins comes into the auction as one of the most experienced bowlers in the pool. He has also displayed great leadership ability, taking Australia to the 2023 ODI World Cup title against all odds. He has set his base price at Rs 2 crore.Big strides with KKRPat Cummins is an IPL veteran. He has been a part of the league since 2014 when he made his debut for the KKR. In his debut match, he bowled an absolute peach that sneaked past Dwayne Smith's defence. That was the only match Cummins would play in his debut season. But the wicket made enough of an impact for KKR to retain the pacer. They also won the title that season, which prompted them to keep the team's core intact.Cummins played three more matches in the next season. But on two of those occasions, he bowled his allotted four overs. However, he ended up with just one wicket to show for his efforts.Cummins' first real opportunity to become a regular came in 2017 when he went to the Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils). He played 12 matches for the team and picked up 15 wickets. His average was also at a respectable 24.86. Seeing his numbers, the Mumbai Indians bought him up for the 2018 Season, paying Rs 5.4 Crore. But Cumming missed the entire season due to a back injury. He also decided to forego the 2019 season due to the high-workload at international level.All-round showCummins returned to the IPL in 2020. He was one of the top international bowlers by this point. After a fierce bidding battle between Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore, he eventually went to the Kolkata Knight Riders for a price of Rs 15.5 crore. It was the highest price a franchise had paid for an overseas player up until that point. He played 14 matches for KKR in that season, picking up 12 wickets. He appeared less often in the subsequent season. He played just seven matches and bagged nine wickets. He started to shine with the bat too. He scored an unbeaten 66 against the Chennai Super Kings to take his team to victory. KKR released him before the next auction but bought him back at a lower price of Rs 7.25 crore. His experience was invaluable for the side, but on the field, he appeared for only five matches. However, he made an even bigger impact with the bat. He scored the second-fastest fifty of the IPL off just 14 balls.Pat Cummins comes into the 2023 edition as Australia's ODI World Cup-winning captain.Teams that could target Pat CumminsKKR have shown earlier that they are capable of releasing Cummins, only to get him back at a discount. They could try this again in the 2024 IPL auction. Cummins is familiar with the team and some of his best performances have come while playing for them. Cummins' all-round ability will be an asset for KKR as they have bolstered their spin department but kept their options open for pacers.Gujarat Titans could use a good all-rounder for Hardik Pandya's exit as well. They have a young captain in Shubman Gill. Cummins' experience will be a huge asset for Gill in his first season at the helm. Cummins will also add some variety to the Gujarat attack that has Mohammed Shami as the mainstay. After trading Avesh Khan, Lucknow Super Giants will also want a good fast-bowling option to replace him. Mark Wood is currently the team's go-to pacer. He could form a dangerous partnership with Cummins. Both bowlers are genuine wicket-takers. Naveen Ul Haq can be an effective first-change bowler to keep the opposition from getting away with the game.Topics mentioned in this article
