Life update: Im still singing songs about wanting someone (new straight situationship) in front of the guy in karaoke and i finally quit on my toxic boss (also straight with a boyfriend mind) after she kept trying to gaybait me into an inappropriate working relationship
this almost makes me want to go back to law school
part of my matchbook collection
A YA romantasy writer filed suit against another writer for copyright infringement, and as is always the case with these things, she padded her claims with delusionally spurious examples. The judge issued a 160-page ruling against the plaintiff where you can tell from the start how resentful they (or whatever clerk actually did the work) are to have been forced by duty to have read the works in question.
OH OKAY......

I was talking to my dad recently about how the de facto goal of capitalism but especially the GDP as a measure/Godwin's Law phenomenon is to increase the number of transactions per transaction.
House buying is a nicely refined version of this. You cannot simply purchase a house. You must first purchase a real estate agent, and then an inspector, then several contractors, then an inspector again, then an insurance agent and also a bank loan and a mortgage insurance and by the time you pay for the house there have been at least half a dozen transactions for your transaction, and every one of these counts toward GDP.
This also incentivizes insurance in as many fields as possible - health is fine, life good, mortgage yes, but can we get insurance on each individual travel, can we insure the shipping of your package, are you sure you want to accept the risk of buying a toaster without optional warranty because the optional warranty would be an additional transaction which would...
(The primary opposing factor to this is of course the impetus toward monopolies, for the convenience of making all your transactions to one company.)
I was thinking about this when I read this post about the ways publishers are failing new authors by not supporting them - to summarize, a debut novel is great, but they'd rather market another shiny new debut author than support them with developing a sequel, and if they don't need the author to succeed past people buying the initial book they don't have to invest in things like copy editing or fact checking or...
Which then incentivizes the author to go out and do that themself, to increase their chances of success, at which point they've offloaded the investment onto the author in much the same way that trucking companies let you "lease to own" semis so they don't have to pay maintenance or insurance or gas or hours spent queueing. And when the author is doing this on their own, they have to go to a bunch of different businesses that are not all run in-house at the publisher, which - brilliantly - increases the number of transactions per transaction.
And the money does not flow the proper direction (to the creator), and the risk is assumed by the worker, and the shareholders get fatter, and the GDP increases, and the only people unhappy with this are the authors who have no future and the readers who can't find a decent book, not for ready money.
sex is some naked bullshit and food is some crap they found on the ground but online poker is forever
get that down you 🍻
everyone say thank you @leupagus for writing the dunkbaelor slowburn of our dreams!!!!
I don’t even want to write a review of “Top Gun: Maverick” honestly, I’ve seen 1,500+ movies and I’ve never finished one that left me more depressed about the future of this country. I just want to stop thinking about it
By popular demand:
The White House just shared a video using footage from “Top Gun: Maverick” right before real footage of US bombs hitting Iran. I am sorry to announce that I have been 100% vindicated in my views on this movie.

oh shit i didn't expect this to actually get notes lmao
these are all direct quotes from jeffrey jerome cohen's "monster culture (seven theses)" (full pdf linked) i highly encourage you to read it yourself!
that said, while i think cohen's writing is evocative, it can be a little dense, so while i'm here, here's my capsule summary (you can also hear me talk about this in the first episode of my podcast) (listen to @ghostswerepeopletoo)
i. the monster's body is a cultural body - The monster is a work of fiction to be analyzed through tools of literary and sociological theory.
ii. the monster always escapes - As long as the cultural fear from which the monster stems persists, the monster will reappear in retellings, reimaginings, and sequels.
iii. the monster is the harbinger of category crisis - Monsters defy binaries and challenge easy comprehension or categorization.
iv. the monster dwells at the gates of difference - The monster represents the Other.
v. the monster polices the borders of the possible - Tales of the monster exist to discourage unacceptable or taboo behaviors.
vi. fear of the monster is really a kind of desire - Subjects can vicariously participate in the disruption of the social order through the monster.
vii. the monster stands at the threshold… of becoming - Within the monster we find information about the self.
