Tea, tea, latte - cafe, study, desk, study!
Been trying to get in a routine where I make myself go to bed before 10.30. My phone use is still way too high.
Work has been a bit nuts this week. Doing my best to stay the course! Got floored by some terrible physics questions.

Quiet days, filled with rest and nature. I can finally relax and slow down, which is nice. Needed that. Rest is important!
first few days of january 2026 // currently playing: Brand New City - Mitski
the last 6 weeks of 2025 were, if i'm being honest, terrible. i caught a cold, my car broke down (and it took them 3 weeks to fix it), i stopped finding my hobbies enjoyable, and i felt as if everything i've ever done has been for nothing and that i would never amount to much of anything. thankfully, my very superstitious grandma taught me to believe that bad things happen so that good things can occur, so i remain optimistic. the first few days of 2026 have already felt like a breath of fresh air. i have been reading every day and establishing more of a routine, which has helped my mood and motivation quite a bit. i also joined a book club ! and i've been opting to go to the library for "silent reading time" with friends as opposed to dropping $10 on a latte at a cafe every time. i sort of lost myself at the end of last year, so now i'm working to find my way back to the person i want to be. i want this to be a year filled with self-growth, creative endeavors, and better financial habits.

Good morning, delicious coffee. Anyone else reading this morning before work?

First post of the year. I took a break between the 24th and the 2nd. Felt nice. Yesterday I started again and did an online course which was really interesting. I'm still in Spain for vacation and I'll go slow for the next few days.

Been starting my mornings with coffee + a book in bed and on these cold winter mornings it’s been exactly what I needed ❄️
does it ever drive you crazy just how fast the night changes?
So it's come my attention that there are a lot of students, particularly in humanities and social sciences disciplines, who need to hear this, so here goes:
Do the readings.
Oh my God, just do the readings. I promise, it gets easier once you get into the habit of it.
What makes a good student? Doing the readings. Literally just doing the readings is enough to make you a good student.
The readings *are* the course. The lectures are just priming you for the readings. The tutorials and seminars are just how we collectively process the readings. If the readings were intended to be optional, they would have been listed under the "optional readings" heading.
"Oh but I hate this reading! The author's an idiot, they're wrong about everything" Good. Do the reading and then tear it apart in class. This isn't high school, you're not expected to mindlessly absorb things anymore
If you're in physics, do the derivations. Don't believe that any equation given to you is true. Derive it. Convince yourself that it must be true, and understand the limitations of its truth.
The very first lecture I give my students emphasizes that they do not have to accept the readings as truth from on high. They don't even have to like them! Critical reading is perhaps the most important skill I hope they take away from my course, and you can't develop it if you're not doing the fucking readings!
#the number of ENGLISH MAJORS who refuse to read and then complain about not understanding the class discussions#I'm begging y'all. the information is in the words
it’s crazy how much you can read if you read
Big journalling session this afternoon to close the year and open up to the possibilities of 2026. I'm absolutely determined to achieve the goals I set for myself, which means consistent planning and discipline over the next twelve months.
