I think it’s about time I talk about my new favorite musical.

So this is based off a scene from a new musical called BASURA that just finished its premiere in Atlanta. And yallllll this showwwww. It was genuinely one of the greatest theater experiences I’ve ever had. And this specific scene and song just stuck with me soooo hard. It’s a song called “I Can Hear The Stars” and it’s just so incredibly beautiful and it’s so crazy cause it puts all of my feelings about creating art into words that I’ve never been able to find. It’s sung by a character named Nunu (the one on the right) and I’ve never related to a character more in my life. We also have José (on the left) and Dani (middle) who do sing a little in the song as well. It’s such a beautiful bonding moment for the three of them and GOD I LOVE THIS MUSICAL. The Alliance Theatre (where this show was premiering) posted this song if anyone is interested in hearing it!! (I can post the link)

Anyways idk, this musical just really really spoke to me and I wish I could see it again IMMEDIATELY. Really really hoping for a Broadway transfer soooo soon 🤞 I’d be happy to give more details about the show to anyone who’s interested!! Heyyyyy, so I haven’t drawn anything Outsiders since the beginning of June… I kinda got obsessed with a new musical and I’ve been focusing so much time on that 🫣 and I am kinda locked in on that until like next week but I promise I’ll get back to The Outsiders soon enough cause I miss them BAD. So I drew Bonale!Johnny as my warm up today 🫶 I kinda wanna post my art for the other show here but idk if anyone would be interested, it’s a new show that’s premiering rn so- anyways Johnny Cade I miss you 😔

Hi pookie🥹 as a newbie kind of getting used to digital art coming from a self taught traditional artist in colored pencil realism, I was wondering what brushes you use if you use procreate and what brushes your bestie uses too for the collabs if they don’t mind sharing and giving tips? Bc the Parry collab one you two did fed me and im curious how your bestie does Paul’s hair like that😭 blonde!Paul my beloved aka if you both use the same app as I do, if you don’t mind sharing some secrets/art tips🥹👉🏻👈🏻

Sophie’s (@/horizons.art on insta) is super simple. She exclusively uses the Tinderbox brush which you can find below! All sketching, line art, and coloring is done with that!

My brushes are a bit more complicated. I switch between sketching pencil (a custom brush from another artist, I can find the link if you’re interested) and 6B Pencil (can be found in the sketching section of the classic library), the Syrup brush (can be found in the inking section of the classic library) is what I use for base colors and also the brush I use for my stickers (line art and coloring), Nikko Rull (can be found in the painting section of the classic library) is what I use for the backgrounds (sometimes) and also when I just do full paintings, and finally Thick Pencil is what I use for rendering and what I used to use for line art like in the Parry collab (also a custom brush but I cannot seem to remember the source but I’ll dig if you’re interested). My line art now is generally done in Clip Studio Paint when I’m on my computer cause I do not enjoy doing line art on my iPad outside of my stickers lol.

It’s honestly so crazy cause since we’ve started our collabs our art has improved SO much cause we’re learning from each other. She used to hate coloring and I used to hate line art but we’ve both found joy in those things recently. So my biggest piece of advice is study the artists you like. Find the things you like about their art and use that to develop yours. Inspiration is a beautiful thing. And remember brushes don’t make the artist but will influence the final look! Trust that you’ll find your process soon enough. If there’s anything specific you’d like to know or anything please feel free to ask! I’m more than happy to share whatever I can.

Rendering also confuses me a lot😭 so I don’t mind tips for that if you have any too😭 coming from a traditional art background. Rendering is when you’re adding depth the drawing making it more 3d and such, there’s so many ways to do this but the biggest thing for it is learning lighting!! Now I know that’s not easy and hell I’m still actively learning it. Truly studies are going to be your biggest help. Look at photos and try to block out how light hits the subject. Look up tutorials cause it’s not as easy as light and shadow, there’s things like bounce lighting too!! Make sure you’re able to identify the lighting source(s). Just being able to identify where light is coming from will do so much to understand how light reflects off things (at least for me it helped a ton) It won’t be easy so don’t be too hard on yourself about it (this goes with anything in art), I promise you Sophie and I do the same thing when we can’t get something but that’s when you start studying again. And also remember, you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to. If you like sketching and coloring then just do that!! I do that ALL the time!! Some of my favorite pieces are just colored sketches. (See below)

It’s going to be a lot of trial and error. Finding the textures you like, how you like your colors, the level of detail you enjoy having. Just keep it fun, the fastest way to burnout is forcing yourself to do something you don’t enjoy! Trust me I’ve been there many many times. Always make sure you give yourself grace when learning something new but also keep yourself disciplined. Knowledge in the principals will do wonders frfr. I wish I could help more with rendering but a lot of it also comes down to personal preference too, I do a lot less than Sophie does ya know?

Raaaahh🥹 how I did it with colored pencils was laying down the lightest shade of color from my reference and then slowly gradually build it up to the darkest and I think I apply that to rendering but then it looks over render if that’s a thing. You wanna help me with my Parry piece im doing that might be given to Papa Dan Dan😭 🥹👉🏻👈🏻 like for Darry’s flannel for example do I do every line with holding it down to make that line thing procreate does or is there a texture brush for that? I have so many unfinished drawings for Darry novel and yet they’re mostly flat colors bc im scared to render this is an example of my photorealism style in colored pencils an unfinished drawing of Jason Schmidt:

That’s so beautiful!! I understand the over rendering thing, I’d recommend keeping the same idea (working light to dark) but maybe simplify the colors you’re using? If that makes sense? I personally start with a middle color as the base and then add lighting and shadows as necessary. I usually only use 3 to 4 colors when rendering skin.

When it comes to patterns, I usually hand draw it all. (Sometimes I create my own pattern brush) Remember that patterns will follow the flow of the fabric so they won’t necessarily be perfectly straight lines. I don’t do it perfectly but hopefully you can see what I mean!

It’s a little easier to see when I draw Johnny’s shirt!

I’m sure you can find a pattern and then warp it to match (that’s what I used to do with Johnny’s shirt) but I for me personally I find it easier to just draw it every time cause fabric folds are weird lol.

Also with flannel I find layer (or brush) opacity and layer modes EXTREMELY helpful to create the overlapping effect it has.

Ignore the JCP reference lol (yes parry dirty dancing in the works lol) I keep having the saying from one of my favorite Stephen King books 11/22/63: “Keep it simple stupid” in the back of my head every time I draw but then this happens lol. Do you use smudge tool to blend any?

I only use it when I’m painting and even then it’s not super often. The brush I use for rendering is soft enough that I can blend without a smudge or blur tool! I prefer when the brush can blend versus using a separate tool🙂‍↕️

And trust I understand the whole try keep it simple but then doesn’t thing. I do it all the time😔✌️ I’ve since changed my perspective from “keep it simple” to “keep it loose” and that seems to work better for me!

Bet🙂‍↕️ bruh I have so many art questions it’s not even funny😭 especially for female anatomy (to draw my child connie biggs from the darry novel) and Darry’s jaw/chin bc every time I draw his chin/jaw it always looks flat and off and it makes my eye twitch and don’t get me started on his Superman curl that people will give him I cry everytime I attempt to it

I drew this pretty immediately after seeing the show for the second and third time. Seeing this scene front row made me especially emotional??? Idk what it was that night but I was a wreck lol. But I had the vision for the drawing while watching the show and I knew I had to get it out of my head or I’d never stop thinking about it. And when I say this is one of my favorite pieces I’ve done so far. Idk there’s just something about it🥺❤️

🌅Two-Bit Owala🌅

So I’m gonna be so honest, I’m not entirely sure how to start this. But if you’ve ever seen Jaydon with this water bottle then hi! I’m the one who made it!!

So here’s how it all happened.

I first saw the tour in November and immediately I was hooked. After catching my first live from Corbin my friend and I ended up rewatching their older lives. We noticed Jaydon mentioning wanting a Two-Bit Owala a few times and I was immediately hooked on the idea. So I turned to my mom and told her about it and she immediately became hooked on the idea too.

This is where all the plotting and scheming begins.

So first step for me was to confirm that Jaydon had not gotten one yet. But as I’m doing this my mom starts making these comments about how she has “no idea” how I’ll get it to him. Now i was suspicious of this as the tour was going to be near me again at the end of January and the original plan was to see the show there. The reason we went in November was because we weren’t sure if we could make the January shows.

So she keeps making these comments but I’m already committed. Jaydon had confirmed it and I wasn’t gonna back out. Well my suspicions were correct and my mom told me we had tickets for the end of January.

Perfect, now all I needed to do was buy the water bottle, make the stickers, and make it all pretty for him! So I made a few drawings of him as Two-Bit, one that said latchkey kid, one of his name, one of the pendant on his necklace, and obviously a Mickey Mouse🫶 (btw learning to draw Mickey was lowkey a task but I managed) Here’s what it ended up looking like!

After that all I had to do was to wait for the day to come. And boy what a day that was 🥹 I’ll just let the video speak for itself 🫶

And yeah! That’s more or less it! This was truly one of the greatest things I’ve ever done and it makes me so happy he loves it so much. He commented on my video about it saying he uses it everyday and it makes me so emotional to think about 🥹

🥹🫶 If there’s one thing I’m doing it’s gifting people things. If I can make someone’s vision happen or surprise them with something special I absolutely will 🙂‍↕️ I was also the one who made Bonale the little hanging paper dolls he wanted. I just love making things for people idk 🥺
