#huh - after reading that I can't help but feel like she might be on board

i saw this somewhere else but reply / tag what you did today so everyone can see that we all did something different today

#did work #am mildly ill with The Annual (approx) Lurg #last time it was a terrible gastro thing in September #the time before that it was mid 2024 and was bb's first covid (so far only)#this Aug it is an irritating ticklish cough #but as the day has gone on a bit of achey-chill has emerged so we will see what tomorrow brings!#it will (deadlines) have to bring SOME work but it doesn't necessarily have to bring a whole day of work #tonight is likely to bring an early bedtime even by my winter standards #anyway the work was mostly data stuff in the form of graphs and writing things #checked a few things for a few people and helped out another couple of people with other stuff #pretty mellow day tbh

Food: sweet potato fritters with lemon tahini sauce

Ingredients: sweet potato, eggs, cinnamon, flour, breadcrumbs, salt, black pepper, tahini, lemon juice, water, za'atar spice blend

#have eaten very similar things and yum tahini-lemon is so good #would drop the eggs and breadcrumbs and use a chickpea flour batter instead #love kumara and will be making a leek-and-kumara soup later today #(including lentils and maybe a couple of potatoes if it needs more bulk but I think it'll be fine)#(if the celery is getting a bit old for a slaw then it too will be soup)

Every time I'm forced by circumstance to hand-sew something, I remember a fairytale I once read. There are lead-up shenanigans as the humble protagonist helps small animals and meets the princess and all that, but in the climax, the princess rigs a contest for her hand by setting her own task: sew her a dress in a single night.

The noble suitors, who have never sewn a thing in their lives, sabotage themselves by their own ambitions: they choose difficult fabrics to work with and cut huge, elaborate patterns and select gems and pearls and beads to sew onto it, and snip such long bits of thread that they lose time detangling their stitches, and ultimately resort to pinning bits together as they run out of time, so that their offerings initially look beautiful and flashy, but when the princess tries them on they stick her with pin ends and fall apart as she moves.

The humble protagonist uses a very simple pattern without embellishments and sews using short lengths of thread (snipped off and threaded for him by little birds of course) which don't tangle and therefore save time. His dress is plain by contrast, but holds together and the princess is able to move freely in it, and so he wins the contest and her hand.

I particularly think about the bit about threading the needle with shorter lengths of thread, needing to tie off more often but avoiding tangles and thereby saving time.

I then ignore that piece of wisdom passed down through who knows how many years and proceed to cut the longest damn length of thread I can manage because I hate tying off beginning or ending knots and I will not subject myself to more of that even if it does mean more tangles along the way.

#i find thread quality really affects tangles but have not yet figured out how to entirely avoid them #but I have stopped making knots when I'm handsewing a hem or whatever - I just find it annoying because it's different?#so I usually just run the thread under the fold so the loose end is contained and sew a few stitches to anchor the start #same for finishing - few little stitches in place then run the thread back under the hem or the back of other stitches

i keep thinking about how most depictions of the power of prophecy only acknowledge the potential for abuse in insofar as accepting that people can lie and the existence of grifters (false prophets) when there's so much more potential to it

what are the moral/ethical ramifications of knowing information about other people that they don't have access to unless you choose to share it with them? is it ever okay to withhold information about the future in order to negotiate or simply because you have no interest in sharing it? is it ever okay to demand that someone share information about the future with you because you suspect it could be relevant to your imminent decision process? is it an irresponsible and selfish rejection of duty of care to ignore or reject a premonition or to only take advantage of precognition for personal use? is prophecy an invasion of privacy? what about the potential for abuse of prophetic power in order to manipulate and even terrorise by withholding, misleading, or even outright fabricating, knowing that your position is safe due to the value of your power to those who might prosecute you for it? to what extent does personal bias affect the translation of prophetic visions into the future tense? who does a prophet serve? is a prophet human? does the humanity of the prophet matter at all?

#very neat #i also love the idea of a kind of petty prophet who can see enough little things to get by #hedge prophet who does ok on the betting but never that great #it's either a side talent that's mildly relevant colour to the main story #or one day they get hit with a doozy and have to figure out what the fuck to do #it's like the petty criminal who gets caught up in the big plot and has to rise to the occasion #but the big plot is cosmic
