Dealing with Men’s Mid-Life Crises: Using Nostalgia to Recapture Youth
The music video accompanying Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long” targets men of forty to fifty years of age (middle adults) by evoking nostalgia involving a summer when they were youthful, reckless, vigorous and hedonistic. The video incorporates flashbacks as Kid sings the lyrics. Perhaps, they display the indulgences of his younger years at a Northern Michigan lake. These include, hanging out with friends, drinking whisky, and smoking “funny things.” Interestingly, the recurring motif involves Kid and a “special” blonde girl. These two are predominantly kissing or dancing together. This alludes to the summer romance, which are usually temporary. Somehow, it remains dear to everyone since the relationship is free from hassles, drama and commitment; couples enjoy a light, fun-filled relationship. Overall, these flashbacks establish a connection with the audience because it incites similar memories. In contrast, the current Kid Rock drives his boat on what seems to be the exact same lake decades later. This suggests an odd “pilgrimage” to the past; he reminiscences and relieves this brief moment of time. The behaviours of another group of men – who appear to be in their forties – onboard of another boat provide additional corroboration. They wear the same clothing and jewelry as they did twenty some years ago. Furthermore, one of them flips the bird at an old couple fishing on a motionless, wooden boat. As the men speed away, waves from the rotor splash on the two old people. Such indecent actions are merely reenactments of the rebellious and carefree nature of their youth. Kid and these men stop by a double decker boat filled with younger women in bikinis. Surrounding themselves with such youth somehow allows them to feel youthful themselves. Having the summer season remain the only constant element signifies the desire for time to stop at the height of youth and vitality. The nostalgic factor of Kid Rock’s music video appeals to men in their forties because they are undergoing a mid-life crisis. Somehow, their ego is diminishing, and it hurts their pride. They want to reassure themselves that they still have “the touch”: the whole masculine package that includes youth and vitality. Ultimately, the music video conveys that there is still the possibility to revitalize “the touch”; though these men are older, they still have the potential to have recapture the exact same fun of their younger years.
Girls & Boys
Good Charlotte's music video for Girls & Boys confronts ageism of the 21st century in the most ridiculous way possible. The video features the band hanging out at a house party which is a typical territory for teenagers and young adults. However, the people around them are elders, all dressed in clothing that you would see on younger folks - muscle shirts, spiked jewelry, baggy pants, converse, toques, and loads of piercings and tattoos. These elders are seen doing stereotypical 'younger people' things, like skateboarding, playing video games, egging someone's car, and head-banging at a Good Charlotte concert. The lyrics "Girls don't like boys, girls like cars and money" depict the stereotypical high school girl who only dates the rich boy, while "Boys will laugh at girls when they're not funny" suggests that if a girl is pretty enough, he'll do anything for her. "The girls with the bodies like boys with Ferraris" ridicules the fact that, especially in movies, the pretty girl is always seen dating the football player who drives the really fancy car. Furthermore, "All of these boys and all of these girls, losing their souls in a material world" is the line that really applies to the younger generation of the North American 21st century. People are so caught up with having the latest gadgets and appearances that they lose touch of other important things. By having the elders in the music video, it plays with the idea of what our generation might be like when we're older. It's sort of ironic because, based on stereotypes, elders never behave in real life as they do in the music video. Our reputation for being ignorant to world issues, being obsessed with material goods, and constantly partying when we're not on our cell phones is what Good Charlotte is making fun of, using elders to confront the stigma associated with being young in the 21st century.
Un-thinkable
In the music video ‘Un-thinkable (I’m Ready)’ by Alicia Keys, it shows interracial relationships, and how it has been frowned upon from the past until present day. The video addresses racism and how it affects both aspects of interracial relationships. The video revolves around a couple, the woman being African American, with a Caucasian man, while Alicia Keys sings “Un-thinkable”. It shows the same couple from different times, facing the same problems again and again, prejudice against society, and defying social norms. It’s evident that time has changed throughout by the way they dress, but the beliefs still remain. Throughout the video, while Alicia Keys sings of “[doing] the unthinkable” the couple is afraid to publicly engage in their romance, due to judgment from both racial groups Near the end of the video, the song is cut and it shows a fight between the woman’s brother, and her lover, they are fighting about how the man “isn’t good enough” for her. The white people are being prejudiced by the coloured community because of the past. It portrays the belief of the same social group are all the same. The man is proving himself to her and her family that not all white people are judgmental. Even though in today’s society it’s okay to be with someone outside of your social group, people will always take a second look because it’s still not ‘normal’. Although society claims that racism is a thing of the past, and equality is in order, it’s not. People are still being judged and are judging by the colour of someone’s skin and the places where they come from.
Same Love Analysis
Same Love
Same love is a song about homosexuality; the video shows how young people struggle to be themselves as homosexuals due to the pressures of their family, friends and society. As people in a western society, we have trouble accepting different types of people. This video sends a clear message that we need to grow up and accept people for who they are, not judge them because they aren’t whatever your idea of “normal” is. The video describes three types of people: homosexuals afraid to be themselves, homosexuals who are proud of themselves, and the naïve people that judge the homosexuals. This video shows the life of a man, from birth to death, and his struggles as a homosexual. He has a strong fear to be himself, because of the horrible judgement and abuse he may endure. As a teenager, he realizes his love for men, and becomes afraid of admitting it. He lives a very “normal” teenaged life, with friends, dances, and parties while hiding his sexuality. This is similar to many young men and women who might be afraid to show who they are to the world; they wait until they get out of high school, and become adults so that they don’t endure as much hate and bullying of young stupid kids. Years later, now accepting of his self, the man marries his boyfriend. This describes men and women who are who they are regardless of their sexuality, and abuse they endure. They know they will be judged everywhere they go, and will possibly be bashed by many people. They know that they can’t change, even if they wanted to and even if they tried, so they accept who they are and live life as a proud, openly gay man or woman. Lastly, it describes all the naïve people who believe that homosexuality is a horrible, disgusting thing. It is shown through a clip of a man walking down the street with his girlfriend, as they pass the homosexual couple walking holding hands as any straight couple would; he turns to them and calls them the derogatory word “faggots”. This shows how people are so afraid of “different”, that they deal with it by calling homosexuals crude, abusive, derogatory names. The video in all, calls out all the people who don’t believe that homosexuality is a good thing, and tells them that “underneath it’s all the same love”.
Love Songs
Brave New World.
I chose the song Just a Fool by Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton as there love song. The song talks about how they "had there heart set on you" and how they are irrationally in love with someone. I think this relates because both Lenina and John have feeling's for one another that are irrational in their society. The main lyric that is repeated is I'm just a fool for you which I think relates entirely to John because knowing what society she's from and that she'll never love him in the way he want's he still tries and fantasizes about her as his Juliet.
The Handmaids Tale.
I chose the song It Doesn't Hurt by Kate Thompson because it is a devastatingly sad song about having to be with someone. The lyricist says "It doesn't hurt unless I walk, I don't feel any pain unless I try to talk. I don't even cry, unless I open my eyes." When talking about what she wants to say to the man she was with. I think this relates because OfFred is only with the commander because she has to be. She also say's "I know you'd feel better, If i was over it" which mirrors The commander when he tells OfFred that he thinks this is a better life and that he want's her to be okay with her life as it is now.
Love Songs: HMT & BNW
Brave New World: Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis
I picked this song because no one approves of or ships the relationship of John and Lenina, but John goes for it anyways. Despite how hurt he becomes, he continues trying to pursue her.
Handmaid's Tale: Disturbia by Rihanna
I picked this song because the first time Offred sees the commander one on one in his office, her mind goes to a really dark place and she imagines killing him in a pretty appalling/disturbing way.
Shakespeare Quotes
"This above all: to thine own self be true". -Hamlet (Act I, Scene III) This is Polonius' advice to his son, Laertes,
This is a really popular Shakespeare quote. Reading Brave New World and individuality made me think of this quote. I really believe that living up to your own expectations and not others is very important. To live by your own integrity and consicus, being brave and being yourself even though people don't necessarily agree is important too.
Love Songs
To describe the relationship between John and Lenina I chose the song "Something Good" by Alt-J. This isn't exactly a "love song", but more so about heartbreak, and staying "distracted" being the way to get through it. This would obviously apply after John "betrays" Lenina and she uses soma to bring herself to get over him.
Something good, oh something good, oh something good, Oh something good tonight will make me forget about you for now Get high, hit the floor before you go
For Offred and the Commander, I chose the song "Lolita" by Miniature Tigers. The two have this forbidden relationship, but become curious about one another. For a while it becomes unclear what one wants from the other. The Commander tries to bring her in with scrabble, Offred takes note that he seems to like her and uses this to get hand lotion and to be able to read.
...A face that doesn’t care about me No you’re reading a book outside by yourself all night
Though they both know that there would be extreme consequences if anyone else were to find out about their progressing relationship.
want to look around inside your head want to turn on your light...
and i dont know what i want from you not sure if I want to stay with you and I cant take my mask away.
Also, this verse kind of made me picture the Commander trying to secretly listen to Offred while she's in her room through her door or something, which also made me uncomfortable...
late afternoon up there in your room heard you humming something softly to yourself, awake.
when you go to your dark place I wanna look in your light...
Songs
For Lenina and John, I chose the song "Until We Bleed" by Lykke Li. As a whole, the song is about a couple who are so in love, yet they have a toxic relationship. I feel like this can also sort of relate to Lenina and John because he loves her and wants to marry her, but she's only looking for sex because that's how she was conditioned. He's so emotionally volatile, hurt and confused by this that he ends up hitting her. "You're my drug, we live it / you're drunk, you need it" can relate to them because Lenina is like a drug to him; he is intoxicated by her beauty. She is drunk off of soma, and she needs it to be comfortable.
For Offred and the Commander, I chose the song "No One Knows" by Queens of the Stone Age. It's not a really typical love song, but their relationship isn't exactly a typical love story either. The first verse talks about having rules to follow, and in Gilead society, this is 100% true. Immediately after, the singer says "No one knows". This obviously shows how nobody knows that Offred is secretly seeing the Commander. The "pills to swallow" represent how Offred cannot refuse the Commander; they "stick in her throat / Taste like gold". Though on one hand it's uncomfortable and dangerous, on the other hand it is exciting and a form of rebellion. At the chorus the perspective shifts to the Commanders, as he realizes that Offred is his (of-Fred), yet he might be a fool for doing something so dangerous. In the second verse, it's the Commander dreaming of her and 'having her' as they say in Brave New World (which he does get to do at Jezebel's Club). The final chorus is about how they bring each other the gift of intimacy for the Commander and secret knowledge for Offred, but still nobody knows about their secret meetings (atleast until Serena finds out). I thought it was quite fitting.
Songs
John and Lenina: Opposites Attract by Paula Abdul
I think this song best symbolizes their relationship, because one of the reasons they like each other so much is the differences between them. John likes Lenina because she is the object of beauty and perfection that he read about in Shakespeare, but had never seen. He notices and appreciates the way she cares about her appearance and this is something that he doesn't care about in his own life. Lenina likes John because he is the only man who is truly different. He is foreign to her and her society and she likes the mystery associated with him. Both of them like each other because of their differences and those differences are what make them come together but also split them up.
Love Songs and Dialectics
Brave New World:
"Always on My Mind" by Elvis
This song fits Lenina's perspective on her emotions with John. The title is self explanatory; ever since their encounter at the Savage Reserve, John has never escaped Lenina's mind. She is constantly thinking about what it is like to have sexual intercourse with an outsider. The first stanza seems like words Lenina would say to John after her failed attempt at the apartment. She "wasn't as good as [she] should have." In other words, she did not abide nor fit John's moral standard. "Maybe [she] did not love [him]" in the sense that the foundation of their "relationship" is desire and lust. In the third stanza there is begging for one more chance to keep the person referenced "satisfied". It sounds odd, as the word can have a sexual connotation. By the fourth stanza, there seems to be an expression of regret with how there was no admission of happiness when the person in reference is theirs. This is similar to the part in John's apartment where Lenina immediately undresses and (for a lack of better word) talks dirty to John. This song embodies the thoughts and emotions Lenina has towards John after the incident in his apartment; she begs him to "forgive" her.
Handmaids Tale:
"You Don't Understand Me" by Roxette
This song fits the earlier parts of Offred and the Commander's affair. It is a game; both sides try to understand each other and what they are after. This song, in some way, fits the thought processes of both Characters. The stanzas can be broken as dialogue between the two characters, and it establishes the dialectics between them. Offred begins in the first stanza. In their meetings, Offred expresses "the silence was so thick you could cut it in a knife". She also puts her trust in the Commander's hands. She hopes that it is not some entrapment process. They've hit the wall again because nothing seems to progress; all they do is play scrabble. The second stanza parallels the Commander's vague expression of his feelings. He has the desire for intellectual and sexual companionship. He wants to alleviate his guilt to the Handmaids by easing their lives. In the third stanza it says "when you kiss my mouth and you hold my body close, do you wonder who's inside?" This is something Offred would say to the Commander since she feigns her passion for him; she uses the Commander for transactional purposes. This song seems to be some subconscious thought processes that both characters would have at their early "meetings"
Love Songs
John and Lenina: Love Story by Taylor Swift
This song explains a love that is forbidden, it describes a version of Romeo and Juliet. John and Lenina have this type of relationship, they are not allowed to be together because of their class and the general rules in the society, which includes no long lasting relationships. The two characters are in love but are separated by the society.
Handmaid and The Commander: You Shouldn't Kiss me Like This by Toby Keith
This song talks about loving your best friend. I feel as though the relationship between Offred and the Commander is a friendship that turned into a like after an interesting night between the two. They seem to become good friends and play scrabble together, and they like each other but it becomes awkward between them.
Love Songs
The song that best fits the relationship between Lenina and John is “Chasing Pavements” by Adele. This song is basically about how a man or woman argues on whether he/she should continue a relationship that may end up nowhere. In Brave New World, John and Lenina both have different worlds. John the Savage fell in love with Lenina, a woman who does not know what true love is. At the end, when Lenina declines John’s marriage proposal, John realizes that he “[chased a] pavement that [lead] nowhere”.
There is also a song that describes the relationship between Offred and the Commander. This song that best describes this relationship is Human by Christina Perri. This song is about how much a woman can do for a man. For example, she “can fake a smile [and She] can force a laugh” or do everything just to make her man smile. Similar in The Handmaid’s Tale, Offred does not have a choice but to fake her emotions just to make the Commander feel sexually and emotionally satisfied as love between the two is non-existent.
Songs
The song that best fit John and Lenina's relationship is 'Latch-Acoustic Version' by Disclosure, ft. Sam Smith. The song is basically about a lover proclaiming their unbreakable love for this particular individual, even if they are feeling uncertainty and doubts about their relationship. However, despite all of these bad thoughts and feelings, the singer sings that "if there are boundaries [that comes in their way, he will be ] latching on [to their lover]". The song is very much like John and Lenina's story, because John was never really sure who the real Lenina is. John have witnessed odd and unfamiliar qualities of her, even some qualities that are against his moral code, yet John still continues on with his relationship with Lenina, because he feels like there's still hope for both of them. Also, on both the song and John and Lenina's relationship, we only get a perspective from one part of the relationship, making us wonder what the other person is feeling about their relationship. The song that that best represents the Handmaid and the Commander's relationship is 'Human Nature' by Michael Jackson. Jackson's song is about how he can't help himself but to admire and lust after this beautiful stranger and all he wants to do is enjoy the moment with her and discover the mysteries of life. The title of the song ,"human nature" basically answers why Jackson has a longing for living life on the edge. Similar to the song, the reason why both The Handmaid and the Commander engages in the extramarital affair is because they want to uncover the mystery, and in some way, break away from the rules of their society.
Love Songs (John and Lenina)
How To Save A Life- The Fray I chose this song to represent John and Lenina's relationship because John loves her so much and she rejects him. This basically drives him mad and he doesn't understand why she can't love him back. He feels all alone in this brave new world and he saw Lenina as a light in the darkness. So once she rejects him he realizes he is all alone and wishes someone would "save his life" from this new society and broken heart.
Love Song (Commander and Offred)
Bring Me To Life- Evanescence I chose this song to represent their relationship because Offred wants to be saved from this life she is trapped in, she wants to be brought back to her former life before all of this happened and she became a handmaid and the Commander is helping her by indulging her in things from her past life.
