Same Love Analysis
Same Love
Same love is a song about homosexuality; the video shows how young people struggle to be themselves as homosexuals due to the pressures of their family, friends and society. As people in a western society, we have trouble accepting different types of people. This video sends a clear message that we need to grow up and accept people for who they are, not judge them because they aren’t whatever your idea of “normal” is. The video describes three types of people: homosexuals afraid to be themselves, homosexuals who are proud of themselves, and the naïve people that judge the homosexuals. This video shows the life of a man, from birth to death, and his struggles as a homosexual. He has a strong fear to be himself, because of the horrible judgement and abuse he may endure. As a teenager, he realizes his love for men, and becomes afraid of admitting it. He lives a very “normal” teenaged life, with friends, dances, and parties while hiding his sexuality. This is similar to many young men and women who might be afraid to show who they are to the world; they wait until they get out of high school, and become adults so that they don’t endure as much hate and bullying of young stupid kids. Years later, now accepting of his self, the man marries his boyfriend. This describes men and women who are who they are regardless of their sexuality, and abuse they endure. They know they will be judged everywhere they go, and will possibly be bashed by many people. They know that they can’t change, even if they wanted to and even if they tried, so they accept who they are and live life as a proud, openly gay man or woman. Lastly, it describes all the naïve people who believe that homosexuality is a horrible, disgusting thing. It is shown through a clip of a man walking down the street with his girlfriend, as they pass the homosexual couple walking holding hands as any straight couple would; he turns to them and calls them the derogatory word “faggots”. This shows how people are so afraid of “different”, that they deal with it by calling homosexuals crude, abusive, derogatory names. The video in all, calls out all the people who don’t believe that homosexuality is a good thing, and tells them that “underneath it’s all the same love”.
Love Songs
John and Lenina: Love Story by Taylor Swift
This song explains a love that is forbidden, it describes a version of Romeo and Juliet. John and Lenina have this type of relationship, they are not allowed to be together because of their class and the general rules in the society, which includes no long lasting relationships. The two characters are in love but are separated by the society.
Handmaid and The Commander: You Shouldn't Kiss me Like This by Toby Keith
This song talks about loving your best friend. I feel as though the relationship between Offred and the Commander is a friendship that turned into a like after an interesting night between the two. They seem to become good friends and play scrabble together, and they like each other but it becomes awkward between them.
Timon of Athens
"He's poor, and that's revenge enough"
-Timon of Athens (3.4.72)
I chose this quote because in the world today there is so much poverty, and in these times there shouldn't be. People who are less fortunate are commonly judged as lazy, or as low-lives. We really shouldn't judge people like that, they may not have had as good of a life as people like us; their upbringing may have been bad, they may have a medical problem, or they might even have a serious mental issue. Whatever the reason, they have had a hard life, and we have no right to judge them.
"O brave new world that has such people in it."
John uses this quote as a way to describe the way he feels towards the "new world". He is explaining to Bernard about marriage, and when Bernard admits that him and Lenina have had sex and are not married, John laughs as if his reaction was hilarious. Bernard and John live in two different worlds and the fact that Bernard isn't married to Lenina is ridiculous to John because that isn't how it has always been, to him that's new and so is the entire world that Bernard lives in.
"On the white wonder of dear Juliet's hand, may seize and steal immortal blessing from her lips, who, even pure and vestal modesty, still blush, as thinking their own kisses sin."
John uses this excerpt from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to describe how much he wants to kiss Lenina and how beautiful he thinks she is. He knows that he shouldn't kiss her though because she looks so modest and he doesn't want to take that away from her.
Cloning Using Stem Cell Research
How Stem Cell Cloning Works, Karl Tate, LiveScience, May 16, 2013
http://www.livescience.com/32079-how-stem-cell-cloning-works-infographic.html
This article was all about how stem research works and how it plays a part in cloning. The article explains that stem cell research can clone many cells within the body, which can help people who may have to . This procedure begins by taking the body cells from the patient and an unfertilized egg, given by a donor, and combining the two. The combination is then induced using chemicals to start evolving into a blastocyst. While in the blastocyst, there is a massive amount of stem cells due to the division of the embryonic cell. The cell then becomes genetically identical to the patient or cloned.
I learned that stem cell research, although controversial, can really help people with damaged cells throughout their bodies. By combining body cells and an egg we can recreate our cells and help ourselves by replacing any damaged cells with cloned ones.
Breaking The Law
I didn't conform a bunch of times this passed week. One of my most rebellious acts happened when i was driving to work today (Sunday). I was driving down Route 90, where the speed limit is 70 kilometers per hour, and I was going 80! talk about rebelling!
Blade Runner
In the film Blade Runner, the ideology of technology is that the techonology is advancing faster than we can control. The clones are not supposed to have any type of emotional feeling but they are developing them. Now that they have emotion they don't want to be discarded, this is the reason some have escaped. Since the clones are to be discarded of, the non-clones must track them down and discard of them. This almost seems metaphorical to me. The technological advancements have escaped and the humans are trying to catch them. We will always be one step behind our discoveries, they will continue growing and we will not understand how to control it.
Ethical Question
You are walking down the street on a winter day and you see an old lady, as you're about to walk by her you see she slips on a piece of ice. Do you help the old lady up or do you pretend you didn't notice?
