You know the deal by now. Here's all the Easter eggs and background details I spotted in "The Lion of Embers".
Spoilers below the cut.
This is a sword that Prince Gumball made for Fionna. It first appeared in the third issue of the original 2013 Fionna & Cake comic, and later appeared in the show in the episode "The Prince Who Wanted Everything", where it was shown to be able to turn into a microphone. This episode shows that it can turn into other things too. Including a giant awesome saw blade.
This kiss of life is similar to the way Finn revives Flame Princess in the episode "Burning Low", complete with the burned mouth afterwards. We see Flame Princess attempt to return the favour later in this episode, to no effect.
This flashback scene features a Super Porp machine, as seen in the episode "Dark Purple". You can also see GOLBetty references in the background, since this is before Fionna's universe was canonised. By the way why was DJ Flame already lying down before Fionna ran into him.... that was pretty funny.
Edit: I totally missed this, but this scene was depicting the exact moment that Betty's wish took effect and Fionna's world lost its magic. That's why Flame Prince was already on the ground, and why Cake was randomly nearby. That's also why Fionna was holding a sandwich; the sword that Prince Gumball made for her in the comics had one unused wish, and wishes in Adventure Time seem to have a habit of turning into sandwiches.
Prismo is still having his glitches from last season. Wonder if we'll get closure on that during this season. Also Prismo calls Scarab a cutie. I'm sure that line will keep the fujoshis going for the next couple of years.
The implication that there is a totally separate second layer of connections between universes, for which Prismo is not responsible, is pretty bizarre. Do they both come under the jurisdiction of Prismo's boss? It's worth noting here that while Kumail Nanjiani has returned to voice Prismo, his season one voice actor, Sean Rohani, is "The Voice" who spoke to Huntress Wizard when she was in between universes last episode. Perhaps "The Voice" is the equivalent to Prismo in this other network?
One of the princesses who come to try and kiss Finn is Cotton Candy Princess. This is only her second ever appearance; she first appeared in the Adventure Time season 1 episode "His Hero" over fifteen years ago, when she was rescued by Billy in a flashback.
DJ Flame's first name is Phelix. I don't think we knew that yet. That's probably also Flame Prince's first name in the original Fionna and Cake universe.
Fionna's line "I'm tough. I'm a tough guy" is very similar to Finn's line "It's tough. I'm a tough kid" from the episode "Ocarina".
Developing a theory that the Banana Guards play a lot of Scrabble. (lemniscate is a fancy word for a figure-eight)
PB table flip! A callback to a frequently-giffed moment from the Adventure Time season 1 episode "What Have You Done?"
These characters are the Fionna World versions of Bandit Princess and Kee-Oth. They were seen at Hana Abadeer's party last season.
Every contact in Cake's phone is spelled wrong. To be fair she was a house cat until recently.
The name of this nightclub is a reference to the episode "Belly of the Beast". The Fionna World version of Party Pat from that episode is also seen inside. The bouncer appears to be one of the marauders from "Memories of Boom Boom Mountain". Most of the other background characters in the club scene are either randos or people we've seen before. Let me know if you spot anyone else new!
Like we learned last week, "GROF" is the callsign of DJ Slime's radio station. It is also, of course, Betty's surname.
The Fionna World version of Fern is named "Fennel". She and DJ Flame were seen together at the end of season one, and now it's confirmed they're in a relationship, which is pretty funny. Later on in this episode, Flame Princess cryptically reveals that she's also seeing someone new. However, Fern died and got turned into a tree in that universe, so it's probably someone else.
Ok well this is Dream Warrior from "Who Would Win". The blue version. Does that make it more or less likely that this is the same character as Spirit Dream Warrior? Who knows but it's pretty funny either way. To complicate matters further, Huntress calls him "Spirit Warrior" which is neither his name in "Who Would Win" nor is it any name that has already been used for Spirit Dream Warrior / Spirit of the Forest. His advice in this episode is similarly cryptic to his advice in his debut episode.
This is a reference to the Cheers theme song, which is appropriate given blue guy is pretending to be a bartender here.
So Fionna is obviously the broken tool in this whole riddle, and she needs to help Huntress get home by getting her "underground" into that strange realm of roots from last episode, where she will have to follow the beat to get home... is blue guy calling Fionna a hoe..?
Marceline previously wore this sweater in Return to the Nightosphere / Daddy's Little Monster.
Top surgery scars! A win for everyone who was headcanoning Hunter as transmasc.
There's the s-bomb we knew we were getting this season.
Looks like we're going back to Farmworld again. We know one of Huntress Wizard's seeds went there, and we know that Farmworld Finn is somehow still alive after getting iced by Scarab last season. Perhaps we're going to see multiple different versions of Huntress Wizard sprouting in different places?
witches enjoying a sweet treat
i felt randomly compelled to draw the girls eating some kolache. yagoda on the left has a standard, bagel-like treat, while amanita has a frgal - a pie version from moravian wallachia.
the outfit on the right is inspired by one of the ones from kyjov (located in moravian slovakia, czechia), the one on the left is inspired by a male eastern cracovian outfit (which is polish but i simply Cannot separate the girlies)
